Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The quickest fix depends on what “lagging” means. If controls feel delayed, play from the capture card’s HDMI passthrough instead of the OBS preview. If video stutters, connect the card directly to a motherboard USB 3.x port, use the supplied high-speed cable, remove competing USB devices, and match the capture source to the actual HDMI resolution and frame rate. For audio problems, use a single 48 kHz path. Then test a simple local recording before changing hardware.
First, identify the kind of lag
| What you notice | Most likely category | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Gameplay feels delayed | Preview latency | Play through HDMI passthrough |
| Video skips, freezes or looks jerky | USB bandwidth, unsupported mode, dropped frames or overloaded computer | Try another direct USB port and lower source settings |
| Audio is late while video is smooth | Monitoring path or sample-rate mismatch | Check the monitoring route and 48 kHz |
| Audio slowly drifts out of sync | Clock/sample-rate mismatch, buffering or separate audio paths | Use one 48 kHz route and test a local recording |
| OBS preview lags but recording is smooth | Preview/rendering workload | Check OBS rendering performance and GPU usage |
| Recording itself is choppy | Encoder, disk, GPU, CPU or capture bandwidth | Use a simple scene and lower output settings |
| Stream lags but local recording is fine | Network or streaming-encoder problem | Test recording separately from streaming |
| Black screen, flicker or signal loss starts with a game | HDMI handshake, HDR, VRR, 120 Hz or unsupported resolution | Temporarily disable those features |
If gameplay feels delayed, stop playing through OBS
Connect the console or gaming PC to the card’s HDMI input, the card’s HDMI output to your gaming monitor or TV, and the card’s USB output to the computer. The passthrough display is normally the low-latency gameplay path; the software preview is intended for composition, recording and streaming and can visibly lag.
If passthrough is responsive but OBS is delayed, the card is probably not adding meaningful controller latency. Do not try to cure that situation with random buffering or audio-offset changes. Use passthrough for play and the preview for production.
If passthrough itself is delayed, test a different HDMI cable, display and source device, and confirm that the card supports the input mode. Passthrough is not guaranteed to be latency-free on every model or display.

Fix a choppy or stuttering capture
Put the card on a clean USB path
- Connect it directly to a motherboard USB 3.0/3.1/3.2 port, not USB 2.0.
- Use the supplied cable, or a verified cable rated for the card’s required speed.
- Avoid passive hubs, docks and extension cables while diagnosing.
- Try several USB ports; ports can use different internal controllers.
- Temporarily disconnect external drives, webcams, other capture cards and other high-bandwidth devices.
- Restart the computer if the capture application does not rediscover the device.
- Install motherboard or laptop USB-controller/chipset updates supplied by the manufacturer.
A USB 3 label alone does not guarantee performance. The card, cable, controller, hub topology, source format and computer workload all determine available bandwidth. Elgato specifically notes that two high-bandwidth devices can share a controller and exhaust it: its frozen-video guidance.
Match the input resolution and frame rate
In OBS, right-click the capture source and choose Properties. Check the device, then set Resolution/FPS Type to Custom only for a deliberate test. Choose the signal actually entering the card and a frame rate the computer can sustain. Typical diagnostic pairs are 1080p60 to 1080p60, 1440p60 to 1440p60 when supported, and 4K60 to 4K60 when supported. If stability is uncertain, test 1080p60, then 720p60 or 30 fps.
Do not ask OBS to capture 4K when the card receives 1080p unless that device documents conversion. Some cards cannot upscale the input; Elgato’s resolution guidance recommends matching the input or selecting a lower supported mode. In the source properties, test Buffering disabled where that option exists, then make a short recording.

Fix OBS rendering or encoding lag
A capture card does not remove the work of rendering scenes and encoding output. OBS distinguishes rendering lag (scene compositing), encoding lag (encoder cannot process frames), capture lag (frames are not arriving reliably) and network lag (the stream cannot be sent).
- Close other GPU-heavy applications.
- On Windows, close OBS, right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
- Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync and reduce demanding game settings.
- Open Settings → Video and lower Output (Scaled) Resolution; test 30 fps instead of 60.
- Temporarily remove browser sources, animated overlays, filters, webcams and media sources.
- Create a new scene containing only the capture source.
- Use a hardware encoder when appropriate; it can reduce CPU work, but quality depends on the encoder and settings.
- Record locally before testing a livestream.
Watch OBS’s performance statistics while reproducing the fault rather than treating every symptom as a defective card. OBS documents these controls in its encoding-performance troubleshooting guide.
Fix audio delay, stutter and drift
Remove monitoring delay and duplicate routes
Monitoring capture-card audio through OBS adds software buffering. If you play through passthrough but listen through OBS, sound can arrive late even when controls and video are responsive. Prefer the console/monitor/headset path, or the card’s supported analog party-chat/headset path. If OBS monitoring is necessary, use one short route and do not monitor the same source through both the capture card and desktop audio.

Use 48 kHz consistently
Set Settings → Audio → Sample Rate in OBS to 48 kHz, use stereo where the device does not support surround capture, and set the relevant Windows or macOS audio devices to 48 kHz as well. Elgato states that its capture devices use 48 kHz and warns that 44.1 kHz can produce stutter, drift or other anomalies in its HD60 S+ OBS instructions. Restart the capture application after changing the rate.
Separate fixed offset from drift
- Disable duplicate desktop and capture-card audio sources.
- Standardize every device at 48 kHz.
- Make a local recording.
- Only if the delay is stable, apply a small sync offset and test again.
If audio becomes increasingly early or late over time, it is drift; an offset slider will not repair a clock or sample-rate mismatch.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
This is a diagnostic trade-off, not a universal instruction to abandon high refresh or HDR. Newer HDMI 2.1 cards may support VRR and high-refresh passthrough, but the exact source, display, cable, card, software and operating system combination must be supported. “4K passthrough” also does not necessarily mean “4K capture.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use one capture application at a time
Many devices cannot be opened by OBS, Streamlabs, a manufacturer utility, Discord, a browser camera tab and a video-conferencing app simultaneously.
- Close all other capture and camera applications.
- Open only the manufacturer utility and test the signal.
- Close it completely.
- Open OBS and reactivate or recreate the capture source.
Elgato describes this single-application behavior for the HD60 S+ in its setup guidance. If the manufacturer utility is smooth but OBS is not, investigate OBS properties and scene load; if every application fails, investigate the source, cable, USB path, firmware or hardware.

Run a five-minute controlled test
Use one capture source, no webcam, browser source, overlay or filter, 1080p60 input, 48 kHz stereo audio, direct USB 3.x, and a local recording for five minutes. Use HDMI passthrough as the gameplay display.
- Smooth recording but bad livestream: investigate upload stability and the streaming encoder.
- Choppy recording and preview: investigate USB, source mode and system performance.
- Smooth recording but delayed preview: use passthrough; preview latency is a monitoring limitation.
- Smooth manufacturer utility but bad OBS: investigate OBS configuration.
- Failure everywhere: suspect signal, cable, USB path, firmware or hardware.
Drivers, firmware and software
Install current OBS, the capture maker’s driver, firmware and utility, and available motherboard USB/chipset drivers. Restart after installation and avoid running multiple manufacturer utilities. If trouble began immediately after an update, use the maker’s documented rollback or support process rather than unofficial drivers. The official OBS download page listed version 32.2.2, released August 14, 2026, when checked August 18, 2026; verify the current version at obsproject.com/download before installing.
When should you replace the capture card?
Replacement is a last resort. First test a known-good required-speed USB cable, multiple direct ports, no competing USB devices, 1080p60, a simple OBS scene, the manufacturer utility, current firmware and a supported source mode.
A new card becomes reasonable when the old one is USB 2.0-only for the desired mode, cannot pass through the required refresh rate, lacks required HDR/VRR/HDMI or operating-system support, or reproduces the same stutter in every application with known-good cabling and ports. Confirm the exact model’s capture and passthrough limits; specifications are not interchangeable between product families.
