Best Places to Buy Used PC Parts in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most buyers, eBay is the safest default for used PC parts because it combines broad inventory with a formal buyer-protection process. Experienced enthusiasts can often pay less through Reddit’s r/hardwareswap, while Facebook Marketplace is strongest when you can inspect and test hardware locally. Refurbished and open-box listings can reduce risk, but their warranties and return terms vary by seller and program.

Best places at a glance

Marketplace Best for Protection and testing Main risk Best suited to
eBay Broad selection, exact models, rare parts Formal Money Back Guarantee for most eligible transactions; remote testing only Misrepresented, damaged or “for parts” listings; shipping damage Beginners and most online buyers
r/hardwareswap Enthusiast pricing and complete builds Community reputation and negotiated sales; protection depends on compliant payment and current rules Impersonation, off-platform scams and inconsistent enforcement Experienced buyers
Facebook Marketplace Local pickup, bulky cases, monitors and complete PCs Physical inspection and testing before payment; protection varies by transaction type Little recourse for cash or off-platform deals Buyers who can test locally
Newegg Marketplace Used, open-box and refurbished inventory Seller-specific returns and conditions Assuming Newegg sets one universal policy Buyers willing to read offer terms
Amazon Renewed or Resale Convenient refurbished or returned stock Offer-specific seller, condition and return terms Mixed offers and unclear provenance Convenience-focused buyers
Jawa PC-focused components and systems Check current listing-level protection and returns Terms and inventory may vary Enthusiasts comparing specialist listings
OfferUp, Craigslist and other classifieds Local systems, cases and monitors Usually inspection before payment Fraud, unsafe meetings and no-return sales Confident local buyers

Use eBay’s Money Back Guarantee policy as a safety net, not as a warranty. eBay says eligible purchases generally include non-delivery, faulty or damaged items, and items that do not match the listing, subject to exclusions and deadlines.

Used, open-box, refurbished and “for parts” are different

  • Used: Previously owned; testing and condition depend mainly on the seller.
  • Open-box: Opened or returned retail stock that may be unused, incomplete or incorrectly categorized.
  • Refurbished: Inspected, repaired, cleaned or tested by a manufacturer, retailer or refurbisher. Standards differ, so verify the actual grade, warranty and return policy.
  • For parts/not working: A repair project. Assume total loss unless you understand the fault and the platform’s exclusions.

A tested used GPU from a reputable enthusiast may be a better purchase than an ambiguously graded third-party refurb. Conversely, a manufacturer-certified refurb with meaningful warranty support can justify a higher price.

Marketplace recommendations by use case

eBay: the best default

eBay is usually the easiest place to find exact GPUs, older CPUs, discontinued motherboards, laptop parts and unusual revisions. Search the precise model number, compare sold listings, inspect original photos and review feedback for similar hardware. Confirm whether the offer is used, open-box, refurbished or for parts, and keep payment and messages on eBay.

When a problem occurs, eBay’s buyer workflow generally starts in Purchase History: open a request, allow the seller to respond, then ask eBay to intervene if unresolved. eBay says sellers are generally expected to respond within three business days; see its buyer-safety guidance. Record the unboxing, preserve packaging and test before the applicable deadline. A no-return listing is not a general change-of-mind return, and “for parts” listings may be excluded from protection.

r/hardwareswap: enthusiast value

Community sellers often price hardware more fairly for other enthusiasts and can provide useful details about temperatures, firmware and usage. Read the subreddit’s current rules before buying, verify the username exactly, request a current timestamped photo and ask for evidence appropriate to the component. Never use cryptocurrency, bank transfer, mailed cash or a no-protection payment method with a stranger. Account age, karma and flair are signals, not proof.

Facebook Marketplace: lowest local price, highest responsibility

Local pickup can eliminate shipping risk and let you test a GPU, complete PC, monitor or case before paying. Meet in a public, well-lit location—ideally a police-station exchange area or a repair shop that permits testing. Do not go alone to a private residence. Reject deposits, pressure to change locations, stock-photo listings and prices far below comparable sales. Cash and off-platform payments may leave little recourse.

Newegg Marketplace, Amazon and Jawa

These options are convenient, but the offer—not merely the website—controls your risk. Newegg states that Marketplace sellers may set their own return policies; eligibility can depend on category, packaging, accessories and condition (Newegg Marketplace returns; published return terms). Amazon Resale, Amazon Renewed and third-party offers are distinct, so verify who sold and fulfilled the item and read that offer’s exact terms. Jawa is worth comparing for PC-focused inventory, but confirm current protection, verification and warranty terms on each listing rather than assuming it is safer than eBay.

Where to buy each type of part

Graphics cards

Start with eBay or a tested local/enthusiast sale. Verify the exact model and VRAM, power connectors, dimensions, cooler and accessories. Request GPU-Z identification, benchmark evidence, temperatures, hotspot readings, fan behavior and an artifact-free workload. Mining history is a risk signal—not automatic proof of failure—but continuous heat, fan wear or BIOS changes make testing and returns more important.

CPUs

Confirm socket, BIOS support and exact model. Inspect PGA pins or LGA contact pads, and verify normal clocks and temperatures under a repeatable workload. Clarify whether a cooler or motherboard is included.

Motherboards

Treat boards as higher risk than CPUs or RAM. Check socket, chipset, BIOS version, DDR4 versus DDR5 support, form factor, M.2 lane sharing, I/O shield, antennas and mounting hardware. Test POST, every DIMM and PCIe slot, M.2 storage, USB, Ethernet, audio and Wi-Fi. Bent socket pins and intermittent ports are major concerns.

RAM

Confirm DDR generation, capacity, stick count, rated speed, timings and voltage. Matched kits are preferable. After installation, run a memory test during the return period; a motherboard QVL is useful guidance, not an absolute requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SSDs and hard drives

Request SMART or NVMe health data, total host writes, power-on hours and error indicators. A drive that boots can still have little remaining life. Use a used drive only with backups, and generally buy hard drives new when the price difference is small.

Power supplies

A used PSU is usually a poor bargain unless the exact model, age, provenance, cables and warranty are clear. Modular cables are not interchangeable across brands or models. Avoid unknown-brand units advertised mainly by wattage; a new reputable PSU is often worth the premium because failure can damage other components.

Cases, coolers, fans, monitors and complete PCs

These are often safer local purchases. Verify cooler brackets, fan bearings, dead pixels, USB ports and proprietary cables. For a complete PC, confirm that the advertised CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and PSU are actually installed and that the power supply is adequate.

How to evaluate a listing before paying

  1. Identify the exact part number. Confirm VRAM, socket, memory generation, interface and revision.
  2. Check compatibility. Review motherboard CPU-support and BIOS notes, dimensions, connectors, PSU requirements and lane-sharing limits. AM4 and AM5, and DDR4 and DDR5, are not interchangeable.
  3. Set a total-cost ceiling. Compare sold prices for the same condition and include shipping, tax, missing accessories, replacement parts and the value of a return window.
  4. Evaluate the seller. Look for relevant feedback, original current photos and a credible reason for sale. Request serial-number evidence where counterfeit or warranty concerns matter.
  5. Request proof. GPU-Z or CPU-Z screenshots, benchmark temperatures, RAM-test results, SMART data, POST videos or internal PC photos should match the part being sold.
  6. Keep payment protected. Use platform checkout or a payment method with explicit buyer protection. Never move an eBay transaction off-platform or rely on a payment screenshot.

Test immediately after delivery

Photograph the label, packaging, serial number and condition; record an unboxing for expensive parts. Test before cable-managing, modifying, flashing firmware, replacing a cooler or overclocking.

GIGABYTE B850 AORUS Elite WIFI7 AMD AM5 ATX Motherboard, Support AMD Ryzen 9000/8000/7000 Series, DDR5, 14+2+2 Power Phase, 3X M.2, PCIe 5.0, USB-C, WIFI7, 2.5GbE LAN, EZ-Latch, 5-Year Warranty
  • AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000 / Ryzen 8000 / Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
  • DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs
  • Power Design: 14+2+2
  • Thermals: VRM and M.2 Thermal Guard
  • Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 3x M.2 Slots, USB-C, Sensor Panel Link
  • GPU: Use GPU-Z, a repeatable benchmark and a stress workload; watch temperatures, hotspot, fans, clocks and artifacts.
  • CPU: Check identification in CPU-Z and run Cinebench or another repeatable workload while monitoring package temperature and sustained clocks.
  • RAM: Run MemTest86 or the operating system diagnostic; multiple passes reveal more than a quick boot (MemTest86).
  • SSD or HDD: Inspect SMART/NVMe data with CrystalDiskInfo or the manufacturer’s utility. Back up before a full surface scan.
  • Motherboard: Test POST, memory slots, PCIe, M.2, USB, networking and audio.

These tests reduce uncertainty; no single benchmark guarantees future reliability. If the item fails, preserve evidence and open the platform case before the deadline.

Red flags: when to walk away

  • Price dramatically below comparable sold listings.
  • Seller refuses current photos, serial evidence or a reasonable local test.
  • Stock photos only, vague specifications or no exact model number.
  • “Untested” hardware priced like a tested unit.
  • Pressure to pay outside the platform, send a deposit or use cryptocurrency.
  • Obscured serial numbers without a credible explanation.
  • A complete PC described by its best component while concealing the PSU or other parts.

When buying new is the better deal

Prefer new hardware when the used discount is modest relative to failure costs, especially for power supplies, primary storage and parts needed for a time-critical system. Also choose new when you cannot test promptly, the seller has no credible history, or a transferable warranty is uncertain. Manufacturer warranties may require the original purchaser or proof of purchase and can exclude second-hand sales, mining or modifications; verify the exact product and region.

Final decision guide

  • Need the strongest general protection and selection: start with eBay or a reputable refurbisher.
  • Want the lowest enthusiast price: use r/hardwareswap with protected payment and strict identity checks.
  • Can inspect and test locally: consider Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp or Craigslist, and walk away if testing is refused.
  • Need a rare or discontinued model: search eBay’s broader domestic and international inventory.
  • Buying a PSU or primary drive: usually buy new unless provenance, health evidence, discount and return terms are compelling.
