It is Unicode character U+221E (decimal 8734), officially named INFINITY—not an ASCII character. For a one-time use, copy it, click or tap where it belongs, and paste with Ctrl+V (Windows/Linux), Command+V (Mac), or your device’s Paste command.
What the infinity symbol is—and what it is not
∞ is the standard mathematical text character. The emoji-style ♾️ can use a different presentation and may render with color or variation selectors. A sideways 8, 1/0, or the word “infinity” is not the same character.
The Unicode Consortium lists ∞ at U+221E. Its appearance still depends on the font and application displaying it.
Microsoft Word
Convert the Unicode code with Alt+X
- Place the cursor in Word.
- Type
221E. - Press Alt+X. Word converts the code to ∞.
This workflow is documented for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016 at Microsoft Support. If adjacent hexadecimal characters are being converted too, select only 221E before pressing Alt+X.

Use Word’s symbol menu
- Choose Insert.
- Select Symbol > More Symbols.
- Find ∞, then choose Insert.
If it is difficult to locate, change the font or subset; Microsoft notes that font coverage affects which symbols appear. See Microsoft’s symbol-menu instructions.
Use Math AutoCorrect
In a Word math-input context, type infty or infinity, then press Space. Word converts the command to ∞. Microsoft documents this command for supported Word and other Office contexts at its Math AutoCorrect guide.

Mac
Character Viewer (recommended)
- Click where the symbol should go.
- Press Control–Command–Space, or the configured Fn/Globe–E shortcut.
- Search for infinity.
- Select or double-click ∞.

Unicode Hex Input
- Enable Unicode Hex Input in macOS keyboard/input settings.
- Switch to that input source.
- Hold Option, type
221E, and release Option.
This requires the Unicode Hex Input source and accepts four hexadecimal digits. Details are in the Unicode Consortium keyboard FAQ.

Option+5 may produce ∞ on a standard U.S. layout, but it is layout- and app-dependent; use Character Viewer when it fails.
Windows outside Word
Character Map
- Search Windows for Character Map and open it.
- Choose a font, locate ∞, and select it.
- Click Copy, then paste into your app.
Character Map displays characters available in the selected font. Microsoft’s overview is at Microsoft Support.

There is no dependable, application-independent Windows Alt code for this Unicode character. Frequently repeated Alt+236 instructions rely on legacy code pages, a numeric keypad, Num Lock, application behavior, and font mappings; they can produce another character or nothing. Word’s Alt+X method is a separate Unicode conversion feature.

221E. - Click ∞ to insert it.

Linux
GNOME and GTK applications
- Place the cursor in a text field.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+U, then release.
- Type
221e. - Press Enter or Space.
This Unicode-entry sequence is documented for GNOME and many GTK applications. KDE/Qt applications do not share one identical universal shortcut; use the desktop character map or copy and paste when it is unsupported. See the Unicode keyboard FAQ.
iPhone and iPad
The standard Apple mobile keyboard generally has no dedicated infinity key. Copy ∞ from this page or a note and paste it. For repeated use, create a text replacement such as ;inf that expands to ∞. Third-party keyboards may offer symbol search, but features vary; iOS has no official hexadecimal Unicode-entry method comparable to Word or Linux.
Android
Copy and paste ∞, or check your keyboard’s symbol/number layer. With Gboard, keep a copied symbol available by opening the keyboard’s Clipboard panel and pinning the entry; Google explains pinned clipboard items at Gboard Help. A text shortcut or third-party keyboard is another option. Keyboard layouts and features differ by device.

In CSS, add a terminating space to the escape when the next character is hexadecimal, for example content: "221E ";. In JavaScript, Infinity is a numeric value; "∞" is text. In LaTeX, use infty in math mode, such as $infty$.

Why a shortcut may fail
- Wrong application: Word’s Alt+X and Math AutoCorrect commands are not universal system shortcuts.
- Keyboard layout: Mac Option shortcuts and legacy Windows Alt codes vary by layout.
- No numeric keypad or Num Lock: These affect traditional Alt-number entry, not Word’s Alt+X conversion.
- Font coverage: A box or missing-glyph mark means the selected font may not contain ∞; try a broad symbol font such as Segoe UI Symbol or use Character Viewer/Character Map.
- Mobile or restricted field: An app may omit desktop menus, and a numeric-only form may reject ∞ even when insertion works elsewhere.
- Emoji mismatch: ♾️ may look different from the plain mathematical character ∞.
- Plain code: Typing
221Ealone normally leaves four characters; conversion requires a supported input method.
