Error 0x80070002 usually means Windows could not find a file or package required for an update or installation. The missing item may be an incomplete download, component-store file, setup file, or application file, so the right fix depends on where the code appears. For a Windows Update failure, work through the sequence below: restart, run the troubleshooter, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, rebuild the update cache, then install a specific KB manually if necessary.
What error 0x80070002 means
The underlying Windows error is ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND (“The system cannot find the file specified”). Microsoft treats 0x80070002 as an update-installation failure, not as a diagnosis with one universal cause. Missing or corrupted update payloads, incomplete previous updates, damaged component-store files, and unavailable setup files can all produce it. The same code can also occur during a Windows 10 or 11 feature upgrade, Windows Setup, Microsoft Store installation, or an individual program’s installation. Record the complete message, any KB number, and the screen or application showing the error before applying Windows Update-specific fixes.
Before changing anything
- Back up important files, especially before repair, reset, or disk operations.
- Confirm that you have administrator access and that the system drive has adequate free space for the affected update or upgrade.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB drives and other peripherals, and use a stable internet connection.
- On a work or school computer, contact IT first. Policies, WSUS, Intune, Configuration Manager, or security software may block these operations.
Fix 1: Restart Windows and retry
Restart the computer, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates or Retry. A restart can finish a pending servicing operation, release locked files, and clear an interrupted update state. Do not force a shutdown while an update is applying.

Fix 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply the recommended repair and restart if Windows requests it.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Choose Additional troubleshooters, then Windows Update.
- Select Run the troubleshooter and apply its recommendations.
The troubleshooter can correct service, configuration, database, or cache problems, but it may not repair component-store corruption.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM
DISM repairs the Windows component store—the source Windows uses for servicing and system-file repair. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as administrator, approve User Account Control, and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAllow the operation to finish; it can take considerable time and may appear to pause. A successful run reports that the restore operation completed successfully. By default, DISM may obtain repair files through Windows Update. If those files are unavailable, use a matching official Windows source rather than downloading DLLs from an unofficial site. The source should match the installed edition, language, and architecture. Fix 4: Run System File Checker (SFC)
After DISM completes, run SFC in the same elevated window:

sfc /scannowWait until verification reaches 100 percent, then interpret the result:

SFC repairs protected Windows files when suitable repair files are available; it does not by itself rebuild the Windows Update database.
Fix 5: Clear the Windows Update download cache
Use this targeted cleanup when a downloaded package is incomplete or corrupt. It removes update data, not personal documents.
- Press Win + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop.
- Open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the files and folders inside that directory, not the entire
C:Windowsfolder. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the PC and check for updates again.
If a file cannot be deleted, ensure the service really stopped; another update-related service may still have it open. The next scan can take longer because Windows must download packages again. Avoid aggressive third-party “reset all components” scripts that modify services, permissions, and the registry.

Fix 6: Install a failed KB manually
If Settings names a specific update, such as KBxxxxxxx, search that identifier in the Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Record the complete KB number.
- Choose the package matching your Windows version, product (client or Server), and architecture, such as x64 or ARM64.
- Download and run the package, then restart when prompted.
A standalone package may report “not applicable” if it is superseded, already installed, intended for another product or architecture, or dependent on a missing prerequisite. Manual installation will not repair a damaged component store. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance covers these applicability issues.
Conditional checks: disk errors and software conflicts
Check the file system when symptoms suggest storage trouble
Use an elevated Command Prompt for chkdsk /f C: when you also see read/write errors, repeated file corruption, disk warnings, crashes, or applications unable to open files. Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. It is not a routine first fix for every 0x80070002 occurrence. Back up data before extended repair if diagnostics suggest a failing drive.
Try a clean boot for third-party interference
A clean boot can isolate antivirus, endpoint security, backup, encryption, tuning, overlay, virtualization, or hardware-monitoring software that interferes with servicing. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure, test the update, then restore normal startup. Do not permanently disable protection; use the security vendor’s documented temporary pause or removal method and re-enable protection immediately afterward.

Advanced diagnosis: logs and setup variants
When the normal sequence fails, inspect the evidence instead of guessing. Relevant locations include:
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.logfor component servicing and SFC details.C:WindowsLogsDISMfor DISM operations.- Windows Update logs generated with Microsoft-supported logging tools.
Search for 0x80070002, ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND, Failed to find file, Cannot repair, or CBS. Entries may identify a missing component, incomplete earlier update, servicing-stack mismatch, or non-applicable package. Do not copy individual system files from another PC without qualified Microsoft or enterprise guidance.
If the code appears during a feature upgrade or Setup, note the complete suffix (for example, 0x80070002-0x20009), check storage, disconnect unnecessary devices, remove incompatible utilities temporarily, and use official installation media. For Microsoft Store or one particular application, do not delete the Windows Update cache automatically. Identify the app and use its Microsoft Store or application repair/reset instructions instead.

If nothing works
In-place repair installation
An in-place repair can replace Windows system components while generally preserving personal files and applications when the correct setup path and options are selected. Back up first, confirm the edition and language, use official Microsoft media, and read every setup screen. Do not boot from installation media if your goal is to preserve apps and files unless Microsoft’s instructions specifically require that route.
Reset or clean installation
Reset this PC may offer a “keep my files” choice, but applications and settings can be removed. A clean installation removes the existing Windows installation and can erase files and applications. Neither option guarantees a fix, and a verified backup is essential.
Windows Server installations have different servicing and maintenance requirements; use the Windows Server-specific guidance. On managed devices, let the organization’s IT administrator handle policy, cache, package, and repair decisions.
