You can create products, provide services, run a virtual business, receive an eligible Premium stipend, or collect occasional rewards from resident-run events. Earned L$ may be sold through the official LindeX for a USD account credit, subject to eligibility, verification, fees and Linden Lab’s rules.
This guide separates genuinely scalable work from low-paying activities, explains the current fee structure, and shows how to test an idea without taking on unnecessary land or subscription costs.
What Linden Dollars are—and are not
L$ is Second Life’s in-world token. Residents spend it on Marketplace items, clothing, avatars, furnishings, animations, scripts, land-related transactions, rentals, events, tips and services. Your L$ balance is separate from the USD balance associated with your account.
The official exchange is the LindeX. Linden Lab’s Terms of Service describe L$ as licensed virtual-world tokens rather than ordinary currency, a currency substitute or a financial instrument. A precise way to describe the cash-out possibility is: L$ may be exchanged through the LindeX for a credit in a USD Stored Value Account, then potentially paid out through an eligible method. That is different from holding a bank deposit, and Linden Lab can limit, suspend, modify or revoke the program.

Linden Lab’s creator page promotes sales of fashion, environments, scripts, performances and experiences through in-world commerce and the Marketplace. It also advertises a 90/10 revenue share. Treat that as Linden Lab’s platform claim, not as a guarantee of net profit: land, uploads, software, advertising, refunds, support, taxes and cash-out charges still reduce what you keep.
The fastest ways to get L$
Buy L$ through the LindeX
Buying is the fastest way to obtain L$, but it is purchasing, not earning. Open the viewer’s L$ balance or currency-purchase control, or use the official account purchase page, review the displayed rate and fee, and confirm only on an official Second Life domain. Viewer labels can change; older help pages such as this viewer guide should not be treated as permanent interface documentation.
Use an eligible membership stipend
Some Plus, Premium and Premium Plus memberships include a stipend or other benefits, subject to the live membership rules. The official pricing page lists the following prices as current on June 15, 2026:
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price | Other listed term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | US$5.99 | US$65.99 | — |
| Premium | US$11.99 | US$99 | US$32.97 quarterly |
| Premium Plus | US$29.99 | US$249 | — |
| Premium Plus No Stipend | US$15.99 | US$143.88 | — |
Check the live table at secondlife.com/corporate/pricing before subscribing. VAT, GST, sales tax and payment-provider currency charges can change the amount by region. A stipend is profitable only if its realizable L$ value exceeds the subscription cost—and only if you also value the membership’s land, home, support, upload or event benefits. Calculate break-even using the current LindeX quote and fees, not a historical exchange-rate estimate. The separate page at secondlife.com/premium contains older, conflicting figures and should not be used as the sole current source.

Free and low-cost ways to earn L$
“Free” means no cash payment to participate; it does not mean guaranteed, safe or worthwhile at your hourly rate. Availability and rewards are usually controlled by individual residents, landowners or event organizers. A resident-created list at the Second Life Wiki is useful for ideas, but it is not a Linden Lab guarantee and may become outdated.
Hunts, games, fishing and money trees
These systems can award small amounts or prizes for visiting locations, finding objects, completing tasks or meeting eligibility rules. Rewards may depend on chance, skill, account age, visitor status, location or a limited event period. A venue can close or change its payout without notice.
Contests, events, tips and performances
Competitions and event prizes are occasional. DJs, live performers, hosts and entertainers can receive tips, but audience size and consistency matter more than simply placing a tip jar. Treat tips as variable revenue rather than wages.
Surveys, web offers, camping and sploders
External surveys and offers may reject participants, delay payment or be unavailable in a particular country. Camping chairs and free sploders generally exchange substantial time for very small rewards; a resident guide on making money characterizes camping as slow and generally ineffective. Compare the expected L$ per hour with the value of learning a saleable skill or buying a modest amount through the LindeX.

Safety checks before accepting a reward
- Never give anyone your Second Life password.
- Do not install an unknown viewer, HUD, script or “money-making” tool.
- Reject claims of guaranteed daily L$ or guaranteed USD returns.
- Use payment pages on official Second Life domains and inspect the address before signing in.
- Never send L$ to an intermediary promising to cash it out for you.
- Read the event’s rules, payment timing and eligibility conditions before spending time.
The most realistic ways to build recurring income
The strongest opportunities combine a useful skill, identifiable demand and repeat customers. Start with a small offer and validate demand before paying for a region or large inventory.
Marketplace products
Scalable catalog products include mesh clothing and accessories, avatar bodies and skins, poses and animations, furnishings, buildings, environments, scripts and themed packs. The Second Life Marketplace lets you test discoverability without immediately leasing a shop. Product sales can repeat, but competition, updates, customer support, permissions and refunds consume time.
Custom services and commissions
Scripting, building, photography, machinima, branding, custom design, animation, technical support, teaching and consulting can produce a first sale sooner than a new catalog. Define the deliverable, revision limits, deadline, permissions and payment milestones in writing. One-off commissions scale less easily than products, but recurring clients can make revenue more predictable.
Events and community work
DJing, live music, hosting, classes, mentoring and event production can earn through agreed fees, tips or repeat bookings. Reliability, promotion and a clear audience are the differentiators. A venue that depends on traffic alone may not cover its operating costs.

Stores, rentals and experiences
An in-world shop, club, role-play region, community, themed experience or rental operation can create several revenue streams, but it also adds recurring expenses and vacancy risk. Linden Lab explains land purchase routes—including buying from residents, auctions and private-region arrangements—at its land page. The official pricing page lists example maintenance figures of US$166 per month for a mainland region, US$199 for a private region, US$109 for a homestead and US$60 for an openspace region; VAT may apply. These costs can overwhelm an unvalidated idea, so do not acquire land solely because a venue sounds profitable.
Compare methods by net potential
| Method | Startup cost | Time to first L$ | Scalability | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hunts, games, fishing | Low | Fast | Very low | Rewards vary or disappear |
| Events and tips | Low to moderate | Moderate | Low to moderate | Needs an audience and consistency |
| Freelance services | Low to moderate | Moderate | Moderate | Finding and retaining clients |
| Marketplace products | Moderate | Slow to moderate | High | Competition and support workload |
| In-world store | Moderate to high | Slow | Moderate to high | Land, traffic and operating costs |
| Land rentals | High | Slow | Moderate | Tier, vacancy and capital risk |
| Premium stipend | Subscription cost | After eligibility | None | Stipend may not offset membership cost |
| Buying on LindeX | Cash required | Immediate | None | It is purchasing, not earning |
Use a simple break-even test
- Estimate gross L$ revenue for a month from a specific product, service or venue.
- Subtract Marketplace or operating costs, land, uploads, software, advertising, refunds and staff payments.
- Apply the LindeX selling fee and any payout fee if you intend to convert to USD.
- Divide the remaining value by all hours spent creating, marketing, supporting and administering the work.
If the resulting net hourly return is lower than your realistic alternative, change the offer or stop before adding fixed costs. A sale is not proof of a viable business; repeat demand is.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to sell L$ and request USD
- Earn or receive L$ through legitimate Second Life activity.
- Place a sale through the official LindeX. The sale converts L$ into a credit in your USD Stored Value Account, subject to Linden Lab and Tilia requirements.
- Wait for the account’s applicable verification, eligibility and processing conditions.
- Request a payout from the USD balance using an eligible permitted account or method available in your country.
- Keep records of gross sales, fees, expenses and payout dates.
On the pricing page dated June 15, 2026, Linden Lab lists an 11% fee for buying L$ (minimum US$0.49, maximum US$29.99), a 5% fee for selling L$, and a 5% payout fee (minimum US$3, maximum US$500). Rates and limits can change, so review the current pricing page at the transaction. The Terms of Service do not promise immediate withdrawal for every account or country; payment eligibility, identity checks and available payout methods matter.
USD proceeds may create tax-reporting obligations depending on your country, residence, business structure and amount. VAT, GST, currency conversion, sales tax and provider charges can also affect costs. Keep records and ask a qualified tax professional for advice specific to your jurisdiction.

Policies that can destroy an earning strategy
Gambling and chance-based systems
Free promotional games, skill-based contests, paid wagering and chance-based sploders are not interchangeable. The Terms of Service restrict gambling prohibited by applicable law or requiring a license or governmental approval. Check current rules before operating or promoting any paid chance system; a resident-created page is not proof that an activity is permitted.
Copyright and resale
Sell only textures, meshes, scripts, sounds, animations and branding for which you have the necessary rights. “Full-permission” does not automatically mean unrestricted commercial resale; creator licenses and item permissions still apply. Unauthorized resale can lead to takedowns, account action and lost customer trust.
Off-platform exchanges and account threats
Do not use an intermediary, external exchange or “investment” scheme that promises a better rate or guaranteed return. Keep transactions within permitted LindeX processes, protect account credentials and treat fake viewers and malicious scripts as potential account-compromise tools.
A practical 30-day beginner plan
Days 1–7: Observe demand
- Explore Marketplace categories, popular communities and event calendars.
- List repeated problems residents already pay to solve.
- Learn the viewer’s current currency, inventory and permission controls.
Days 8–14: Choose one offer
- Pick one skill—such as scripting, building, clothing, photography, hosting or teaching.
- Define one audience and one deliverable instead of opening a general store.
- Estimate creation time, support time and every cash expense.
Days 15–21: Build a small test
- Release a small product set or a clearly priced service package.
- Use Marketplace or existing communities before leasing land.
- Collect feedback without promising features or delivery dates you cannot meet.
Days 22–30: Measure and decide
- Record inquiries, sales, refunds, repeat requests and total hours.
- Calculate net hourly return after platform, operating and potential cash-out fees.
- Keep, revise or abandon the idea based on repeat demand—not on one lucky sale.
Do not buy Premium or land solely on the promise of easy income. Add fixed costs only after your test demonstrates customers willing to pay.

Small amounts of L$ can be collected without spending cash, but hunts, camping, surveys and similar activities are uncertain and usually low value. Sustainable income comes from a product, service, performance, experience or access that a defined Second Life audience wants repeatedly. When you cash out, use the official LindeX and USD Stored Value Account process, allow for both selling and payout fees, verify eligibility, and keep real-world tax records.
