You can replace a mouse for most everyday computer work by combining keyboard focus navigation, operating-system and application shortcuts, and—only when necessary—Mouse Keys. Start with Tab and Shift+Tab to move between controls, arrow keys to move inside menus or groups, Enter or Space to activate a focused control, and Esc to back out. Mouse Keys is different: it moves the actual pointer and simulates clicks when a control cannot be reached through normal keyboard focus.
The keyboard-control model
Keyboard-only use depends on focus. Focus is the control that will receive the next command; it is not the mouse pointer. Look for an outline, highlight, selected row, or text caret before activating anything.
| Key | Typical purpose |
|---|---|
| Tab | Move forward through keyboard-focusable controls |
| Shift+Tab | Move backward |
| Arrow keys | Move within menus, lists, toolbars, radio-button groups, and similar controls |
| Enter | Activate a focused link, button, menu item, or command in many applications |
| Space | Toggle a checkbox or activate a focused control, depending on its type |
| Esc | Close a menu or dialog, or cancel an operation |
| Home/End | Go to the beginning or end of a line, list, or document, depending on context |
| Page Up/Page Down | Move by approximately one screen |
| F6 (or a platform equivalent) | Cycle between major areas such as a document, sidebar, toolbar, and address field |
A typical form workflow is: press Tab until the field or button is highlighted, use Shift+Tab if you pass it, use arrow keys inside a group, press Space to toggle a checkbox, Enter to confirm, and Esc to cancel. If focus seems lost, switch to the application again with the platform’s app-switching command.
Only controls that an operating system or application exposes in its tab order can be reached this way. A visible control may still be inaccessible if its software was poorly designed.

Common commands worth learning
These are conventions, not guarantees. A text field, terminal, browser, remote desktop, keyboard layout, or application may override them.
- Ctrl/Command+C, X, and V: copy, cut, and paste.
- Ctrl/Command+Z: undo; many applications use Ctrl/Command+Shift+Z or Y for redo.
- Ctrl/Command+F: find text.
- Ctrl/Command+S: save.
- Ctrl/Command+P: print.
- Alt+Tab (Windows/Linux) or Command+Tab (macOS): switch applications.
- Alt+F4 (Windows) or Command+W (macOS): close the active window or tab, depending on context.
Windows 11
Open apps, settings, and windows
| Shortcut | Result |
|---|---|
| Win+U | Accessibility settings |
| Win+I | Settings |
| Win+S | Search |
| Win+R | Run |
| Win+E | File Explorer |
| Alt+Tab | Switch applications |
| Win+Tab | Task View |
| Win+Arrow | Snap or move the focused window |
| Win+D | Show or hide the desktop |
| Alt+F4 | Close the active window |
In applications, Tab/Shift+Tab move through controls, arrow keys move within a group, and Alt may expose menu access keys where the application provides them. Microsoft describes tab stops, logical tab order, access keys, and grouped arrow-key navigation in its keyboard-interaction guidance.
Turn on Mouse Keys
- Press Win+U, or open Start > Settings > Accessibility.
- Under Interaction, choose Mouse.
- Turn on Mouse keys.
Mouse Keys uses the numeric keypad. The usual directions are:
| Keypad | Movement |
|---|---|
| 7, 8, 9 | Up-left, up, up-right |
| 4, 6 | Left, right |
| 1, 2, 3 | Down-left, down, down-right |
Microsoft’s current instructions also explain how to select the active mouse button and click; the slash key selects the left button in those instructions. A laptop may need an embedded or external numeric keypad, and Num Lock behavior can vary. See Microsoft’s Mouse Keys guide for the options on your build.

Other Windows accessibility options
Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, the on-screen keyboard, and voice features can reduce problems caused by repeated, simultaneous, or difficult key presses. They may be more suitable than remapping for users with tremors, limited dexterity, or fatigue.
macOS
Enable Full Keyboard Access
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Choose Accessibility, then under Motor select Keyboard.
- Turn on Full Keyboard Access.
| Action | Default command |
|---|---|
| Next or previous element | Tab or Shift+Tab |
| Select focused item | Space |
| Move within a group | Arrow keys |
| Next or previous item | Control+Tab / Control+Shift+Tab |
| Search for items | Tab+F |
| Window Chooser | Tab+W |
| Application Chooser | Tab+A |
| Menu bar | Fn+Control+F2 |
| Dock | Fn+A |
| Move pointer to keyboard focus | Tab+C |
| Show command help | Tab+H |
Apple documents these commands and their customization in Full Keyboard Access. A simpler Keyboard Navigation setting can let Tab and Shift+Tab move through controls, but the exact scope depends on the setting and macOS version.
Useful Mac window and editing commands
- Command+Tab: switch applications; Command+`: switch windows within the front application.
- Control+F4 (or Fn+Control+F4): move focus between windows.
- Control+F7 (or the Fn form): change whether Tab reaches all controls or only text fields and lists.
- Command+C, X, V, Z, A, F, and P: copy, cut, paste, undo, select all, find, and print.
Function keys may require Fn or the Globe key. Command, Option, and Control are not interchangeable with Windows modifiers. Apple’s keyboard-shortcut reference notes that application behavior and configuration can change shortcuts.
Turn on Mouse Keys
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility.
- Choose Pointer Control.
- Turn on Mouse Keys.
Apple warns that ordinary keyboard or numeric-keypad text entry is unavailable while Mouse Keys is enabled. Turn it off before typing; it is therefore a fallback for pointer-only controls, not a good permanent navigation mode. Details are in Apple’s Mouse Keys guide.

Some Mac applications still contain controls that are not fully keyboard navigable. Apple’s Pages accessibility report illustrates why application-specific exceptions matter.
Ubuntu and GNOME Linux
Linux shortcuts depend on the distribution, desktop environment (such as GNOME or KDE), application toolkit, and whether the session uses Wayland or X11. The following applies to current Ubuntu/GNOME documentation, not every Linux desktop.
Launch and switch applications
- Press Super to open Activities.
- Type the application name.
- Use Tab or arrow keys to choose a result.
- Press Enter to launch.
Super+Tab commonly cycles applications or overview areas. In controls, Ubuntu documents Tab/Shift+Tab for forward and backward movement, Ctrl+Tab for moving between control groups or leaving a text area that consumes Tab, and arrow keys within lists, grids, toolbars, and radio-button groups. See the Ubuntu keyboard-navigation reference and its keyboard-only desktop guide.

Browse the web without a mouse
| Action | Windows/Linux | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Address bar | Ctrl+L | Command+L |
| New tab | Ctrl+T | Command+T |
| Close tab | Ctrl+W | Command+W |
| Reopen closed tab | Ctrl+Shift+T | Command+Shift+T |
| Next/previous tab | Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab | Control+Tab / Control+Shift+Tab |
| Find on page | Ctrl+F | Command+F |
| Back/forward | Alt+Left/Right | Command+[ / ] |
Tab moves through links, buttons, fields, and browser controls; Enter activates a focused link or button; Space may activate a button or scroll; and arrow keys operate many select controls. Browser implementations differ.
Caret browsing
Microsoft Edge’s caret browsing places a text cursor in page content so arrow keys, Home, and Page Up/Page Down can read or select text. Press F7 to toggle it for the session, or change its setting. It does not replace focus navigation for forms, menus, and buttons. See Edge accessibility features.
When a web page traps or loses focus
- Press Esc to close a pop-up or escape a menu.
- Press Tab slowly and watch for the focus outline.
- Use Ctrl+L or Command+L, then reload or navigate away if necessary.
- Use find or caret browsing for reading.
- Use Mouse Keys only if the control truly cannot be reached.
Hover-only menus, keyboard traps, unlabeled custom widgets, inaccessible date pickers, and canvas-based interfaces are defects in the site, not evidence that you missed a magic shortcut.

Edit text efficiently
- Arrow keys move by character or line; Home/End move to a line’s beginning or end.
- Ctrl+Left/Right (Windows/Linux) and commonly Option+Left/Right (macOS) move by word.
- Ctrl+Home/End (Windows/Linux) and commonly Command+Up/Down (macOS) move to document boundaries.
- Hold Shift with movement keys to select; use Ctrl/Command+A to select all.
- Ctrl+Backspace (Windows/Linux) and commonly Option+Backspace (macOS) delete the preceding word.
Terminals, editors, remote sessions, and web applications can change these conventions. Keyboard selection is usually more precise than dragging through long passages.

Files, folders, and windows
In File Explorer, Finder, or GNOME Files, use Tab or F6 to move among the sidebar, file list, toolbar, and location field; arrow keys to select items; Enter to open; and the file manager’s own commands for rename, copy, paste, delete, and search. Press Esc to cancel a rename or dialog. Exact keys differ by file manager, so prefer its menus and shortcut help when a command is unknown.
Switching applications is different from switching windows inside one application: Windows uses Alt+Tab; macOS uses Command+Tab for apps and Command+` for windows; GNOME commonly uses Super+Tab in its overview.
Troubleshoot keyboard navigation
“Tab skips the control”
- Try arrow keys: focus may be inside a group.
- Try Ctrl+Tab (Linux interfaces) or Control+Tab (macOS).
- On macOS, enable Full Keyboard Access or change the all-controls focus setting.
- Look for the same command in the application menu.
- If no method works, the control may not be keyboard-focusable.
“I cannot see focus”
Look for an outline, highlight, caret, or changed selection. Increase focus contrast where the platform allows it; macOS lets you customize the Full Keyboard Access highlight. Do not press Enter repeatedly when focus is unknown, because it may submit a form or trigger a destructive command.
“A shortcut does nothing”
Confirm the intended application is active, check whether a text field is capturing the key, use Command rather than Ctrl on macOS, try Fn on a laptop, and check for application, browser-extension, or remote-desktop interception.
“Mouse Keys does not move the pointer”
Confirm it is enabled, check for a numeric keypad and Num Lock or embedded-keypad mode, select the correct mouse button, and verify that a remote desktop passes keypad input to the host.
When built-in controls are not enough
Normal keyboard navigation is fastest when controls are accessible. Mouse Keys is a pointer fallback, not a way to make inaccessible software semantic. Depending on your needs, a screen reader can expose structure, voice control can provide hands-free input, and Sticky Keys or Filter Keys can reduce motor demands.
Power users may add remapping or browser tools: PowerToys Keyboard Manager or AutoHotkey on Windows; Karabiner-Elements, BetterTouchTool, or Keyboard Maestro on macOS; and Vimium in compatible browsers. These tools add setup, permissions, conflicts, and security considerations. Start with built-in features, and use third-party automation only for a specific repetitive workflow. Prices and licensing change, so check each vendor before purchase.
