What “real money” means here
“Real money” can mean a PayPal transfer, bank deposit, check, or a gift card that you can actually use. It does not mean that every activity creates income.
- Direct cash: PayPal, bank transfer, check, or an eligible debit-card payout.
- Cash-equivalent rewards: Gift cards. They have value, but cannot necessarily be spent everywhere.
- Cash back: A rebate on a purchase. It is a saving, not free income, and buying something unnecessary to earn a reward can leave you poorer.
- Labor income: Deliveries, pet care, and usability tests pay for your time, skills, and operating costs.
- Promotional bonuses: Usually temporary and conditional on verification, a qualifying purchase, or a deadline.

How these recommendations were selected
Each app has a stated way to earn, a first-party help or terms page, and a practical use for U.S. readers. The list intentionally mixes purchase-linked rewards, surveys, studies, usability work, delivery, and pet care. No app requires an upfront payment for ordinary participation. “Best” means best for a particular use case—not a guarantee of the highest earnings.

1. Swagbucks: best broad rewards app
How it works
Swagbucks combines surveys, shopping, games, app offers, and other tasks. Its internal currency is SB. The company’s help center says 100 SB equals $1, and some rewards can be redeemed from 300 SB, depending on the reward.
Getting paid
Redeem SB for PayPal or gift cards through the rewards area. Swagbucks says it has paid members more than $200 million; that is a company-reported cumulative total, not a forecast for an individual. U.S. residents age 13 or older may participate subject to the terms. See the payout help page, eligibility rules, and official site.
What it is realistically good for
It is useful when you want several low-stakes earning options in one app and accept that surveys may screen you out and offer values vary. Think pocket money, not a replacement job. InboxDollars is the closest alternative if you prefer a cash-denominated balance.
2. InboxDollars: a cash-focused rewards alternative
How it works
InboxDollars lists surveys, shopping, games, app offers, emails, and other activities. Read each offer’s conditions before starting; a displayed reward can remain pending until the company validates completion.

Its payment help page states that the first payment request requires at least $15 and later requests at least $10. PayPal and gift-card processing is described as about three business days when account conditions are met. Check the current payment-request rules and payment terms.

The landing page may show a promotional signup offer. Such offers can require email confirmation, additional qualifying earnings, new-user status, and a deadline; treat the amount as temporary, not normal income: current landing page.
Biggest catch
InboxDollars warns that prior app installs, third-party cookies, ad blockers, completing an offer elsewhere, or failing exact terms can prevent credit. Save screenshots and completion proof, as explained in its app-offer tracking guidance. Swagbucks is a better alternative if you want more shopping and game options rather than a cash-first presentation.
3. Ibotta: best for groceries you already buy
How it works
Ibotta credits offer redemptions, bonuses, and referrals. You generally select an offer, buy the qualifying product, and submit the required receipt or link a supported loyalty account.
Getting paid
Ibotta’s help center says you need $20, at least one qualifying offer redemption, and a wait of at least seven days after redeeming the first offer or purchasing a gift card before withdrawing. Once qualified, withdrawals can go to a supported bank account, PayPal, or gift cards. Delivery is stated as zero to five days depending on method. See how earnings work and withdrawal options.
Best use and catch
Use Ibotta as a spending-reduction tool: claim offers for items already on your list. Do not buy unwanted products merely to reach a bonus. Rakuten is the better fit for online rather than grocery shopping.

4. Rakuten: best for online shopping cash back
How it works
Start at Rakuten’s website, app, or browser extension, activate the merchant offer, and complete the purchase in the same tracked session. Returns, exclusions, another affiliate link, privacy settings, or a tracking failure can remove the reward.
Getting paid
Rakuten says standard payments are issued every three months and require at least $5.01 in confirmed cash back before the payment date. Confirmed cash back can be sent by PayPal, check, Bilt Points, or eligible American Express Membership Rewards points. Gift-card redemption requires at least $5 confirmed and may arrive within minutes. Online and in-store rewards commonly take three to 14 weeks to confirm; travel can take longer. Best use and catch
Activate before checkout and do not stack competing portals for the same transaction. Rakuten rewards a purchase; it is not hourly income. Ibotta is the stronger alternative for eligible supermarket purchases.
5. Upside: fuel and merchant cash back
How it works
Upside shows participating fuel, restaurant, and retail offers. Claim an offer before buying, follow its check-in or receipt instructions, and keep the receipt until the reward posts.
Getting paid
Upside supports withdrawals to a connected bank account, PayPal, or gift card. Its support page warns that cashing out less than $15 may incur a $1 fee. Most requests are processed within 24–48 hours; bank transfers generally take five to seven business days. An email verification link may be required. See cash-out instructions.

Best use and catch
Use it when you already need fuel or patronize a participating merchant. Driving farther, buying extra items, or making a special trip can erase the reward. Rakuten is a better alternative for online purchases.

6. DoorDash Dasher: the highest ceiling, with real operating costs
How it works
Dashers accept delivery offers and are paid through a combination of base pay, customer tips, and promotions such as Peak Pay, Boosts, or Challenges. DoorDash says per-offer base pay can range from $2 to $10 or more, depending on time, distance, and offer desirability.
Getting paid
Weekly direct deposit generally covers the prior Monday–Sunday period and has a stated two- to three-day processing period. Fast Pay has eligibility requirements and requires a debit card rather than a prepaid card; fees and availability vary by market and account. Calculate net, not gross
Before deciding what you earn, subtract fuel, maintenance, depreciation, parking, tolls, insurance, and unpaid time between orders. Keep records for tax reporting and check local requirements. Local demand and promotions change by neighborhood and time, so no fixed hourly result is guaranteed. Rover is an alternative if you prefer scheduled pet-care appointments.

What to verify before applying
Payment method, minimum age, country availability, standard payment timing, practice-test treatment, mobile-versus-desktop requirements, and the process for tests rejected for quality are governed by the current contributor agreement. Confirm those details in the contributor page and support center; do not assume a fixed number of tests or a guaranteed weekly amount. Prolific is a better alternative if you specifically want academic studies rather than product feedback.
8. Rover: local pet-care work
How it works
Rover lets approved providers offer dog walking, boarding, sitting, and house sitting. Your ceiling depends on local demand, reviews, availability, the services you can safely provide, and your ability to manage cancellations and client communication.
What to verify before applying
Rover’s current terms determine approval and background checks, service fees, payout timing, available services, cancellation rules, and the scope of any guarantee or insurance. Review become-a-sitter information and the support center. Treat it as a local service business, not passive income: supplies, transportation, liability, and unpaid communication time matter. DoorDash is the more flexible alternative for people who prefer delivery work.
9. Prolific: paid research studies
How it works
Prolific lists academic and market-research studies matched to participant profiles. Study supply, eligibility, onboarding limits, and available countries fluctuate, so a high advertised maximum is not a typical earning promise.

Check the current participant rules for country eligibility, minimum age, cash-out amount, payment method and processing time, researcher-payment and rejection rules, waitlists, and minimum-reward policy. Use the participant page and participant help center. UserTesting is the alternative if you prefer evaluating websites and apps instead of answering research questions.
Which app should you choose?
- You already shop online: Rakuten.
- You buy groceries anyway: Ibotta.
- You regularly buy gas: Upside.
- You want surveys, games, and offers: Swagbucks or InboxDollars.
- You want active work without a fixed employer schedule: DoorDash.
- You have pet-care skills and local availability: Rover.
- You are comfortable recording product feedback: UserTesting.
- You want academic or market studies: Prolific.
How to avoid missing credit and cash-out problems
- Read the complete offer terms before starting.
- Activate shopping offers before checkout and use one rewards portal per transaction.
- Save screenshots of terms, receipts, order confirmations, and completion milestones.
- Avoid VPNs, duplicate accounts, ad blockers that interfere with attribution, and previously installed promoted apps.
- Check whether a balance is pending, approved, confirmed, or actually withdrawable.
- Make sure your PayPal name and email match the earning account and complete bank verification.
- Wait for stated holding periods; refunds, returns, cancellations, or chargebacks can reverse rewards.
- Never pay a fee or deposit to unlock ordinary tasks.
- For delivery and pet care, record mileage, expenses, supplies, and unpaid time so you know your net result.
Scam and legitimacy checklist
A legitimate app identifies how it earns revenue, publishes eligibility and payout terms, offers a support channel, and separates pending from withdrawable balances. Be cautious of guaranteed high income for minimal effort, cryptocurrency deposits, requests for banking passwords, recruitment as the main earning activity, apps distributed outside reputable stores, pressure to move payments off-platform, or fake support accounts requesting verification codes. A real company can still have low availability, screen-outs, tracking failures, or account reviews.
Bottom line
Choose by use case, not by a single “best app” ranking. Ibotta, Rakuten, and Upside are easiest when they reduce spending you already planned. Swagbucks, InboxDollars, and Prolific can produce small, irregular payments for attention and study participation. UserTesting may pay more per accepted task but has unpredictable invitations. DoorDash and Rover offer the greatest potential because they pay for labor, while also imposing the greatest costs and responsibilities. Start with one app, test a small withdrawal, and measure your actual net value before committing more time or money.
