You can remove an account’s local sign-in from one Xbox, remove the console from your online Microsoft device list, or remove a family member from an Xbox family group. You generally cannot detach an established Xbox profile or gamertag and move it to another Microsoft account through a normal self-service setting. Permanently deleting the profile means closing the entire Microsoft account.
| What you want to remove | Is it possible? | Correct action |
|---|---|---|
| Account from one Xbox console | Yes | Use Remove accounts on the console |
| Xbox from your online device list | Yes | Use Microsoft device management |
| Xbox profile from its Microsoft account | No separate normal detach option is documented | Keep using the existing account or create a separate profile |
| Profile permanently | Yes, by closing the Microsoft account | Use Microsoft’s account-closure process |
| Person from an Xbox family group | Yes, with organizer and consent rules | Manage family members |
Remove an Xbox account from one console
This is the right choice for a guest, former household member, or shared-console account when you want to keep the Microsoft account, gamertag, purchases, achievements, subscriptions, and cloud data.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system, then Settings.
- Go to Account and choose Remove accounts.
- Select the Microsoft/Xbox account and confirm Remove.
Menu wording can vary slightly with the Xbox system update. This removes the account’s local sign-in presence from that console. It does not delete the Xbox profile or Microsoft account, and it does not remove purchases, achievements, subscriptions, or cloud-associated data from Microsoft’s services or other consoles.
Remove the Xbox from your Microsoft account online
Use this when a console was sold, donated, replaced, lost, or should no longer appear in your account management pages. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/devices, locate the Xbox, select Show details if needed, then choose More actions > Remove and confirm.

Microsoft also has a separate Store-device association page at account.microsoft.com/devices/content:
- Sign in and find the device.
- Select Unlink.
- Review the information and confirm.
Remove takes a registered device out of the Microsoft account’s device list. Unlink removes the device from the Microsoft Store content-device association and can help with the Store’s device limit, currently 10 devices according to Microsoft. Downloading Store content to the device again may make it count again.
Neither action deletes the Xbox profile, gamertag, purchases, achievements, or Microsoft account. Online device removal also does not remotely wipe a console or guarantee that a locally saved account has been signed out.

Can you detach or transfer an Xbox profile?
Microsoft’s documented self-service account options do not provide a normal way to detach an established Xbox profile or gamertag from one Microsoft account and attach it to another. The Xbox profile is created through the Microsoft account, and Microsoft associates the gamertag, Gamerscore, purchased content, subscriptions, and related services with that account. See What is a Microsoft account? and Check products or services where you used your Microsoft account.
Removing an account from a console is not a transfer. Changing the account’s sign-in email or alias changes how you access the same account; it does not move the Xbox profile to a different Microsoft account. If another person needs their own identity, create a separate profile and expect the original account’s purchases and progress to remain associated with the original account.
If you are selling or giving away the Xbox
Removing the profile alone is not enough to protect your information. Microsoft’s sell, recycle, or gift guidance recommends this order:

- Unlink it at account.microsoft.com/devices/content when it appears there.
- After the reset, verify that your account no longer appears as a local sign-in option.
A factory reset clears the console for its next owner; it does not delete your Microsoft account or Xbox profile online. Removing the device online is not a substitute for resetting it.
Remove a child or family member
Removing someone from an Xbox family group is different from deleting their Microsoft account or removing their local profile from a physical console. An organizer is required, and if parental consent is attached, the person who granted consent may first need to remove that consent.
On Xbox, the documented route is generally Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members. Select the member and confirm removal. Current labels can vary. Microsoft’s instructions are at Remove members from your family group on Xbox.

Permanently delete the Xbox profile
There is no routine “delete only my Xbox profile” cleanup button. The destructive option is to close the associated Microsoft account, which can also affect Outlook, OneDrive, Microsoft Store purchases, payment information, subscriptions, and other Microsoft services.
Microsoft’s account-closure process asks you to:
- Sign in and verify that you have the correct account.
- Read and acknowledge the consequences.
- Choose a reopening period of 30 or 60 days.
- Select a reason and mark the account for closure.
During the selected period, you can generally reopen the account by signing in and completing verification, as explained in Reopen your Microsoft account. After that period expires, Microsoft says the account’s data and content will be deleted. Closing the wrong account can permanently cost access to its Xbox gamertag, digital purchases, subscriptions, and other services, so verify the email address and gamertag first.
If you suspect unauthorized access
Microsoft’s global “sign out everywhere” feature can take up to 24 hours and specifically excludes Xbox consoles, so it is not sufficient by itself. Follow this recovery sequence:
- Change the Microsoft account password.
- Review recent activity and security information.
- Remove the account from Xbox consoles you control.
- If an old console is available, reset it; if it is gone, remove it from the online device list.
- Use Microsoft’s account-recovery or compromised-account support flow if access is disputed.
See How to sign out of your Microsoft account everywhere. Online device removal does not remotely erase a console.
If you forgot which Microsoft account owns the gamertag
Do not create a new account expecting the gamertag, purchases, or progress to follow. Search Microsoft purchase and subscription receipts, check alternate email addresses used as aliases or security information, and inspect Microsoft apps or devices where you are already signed in. Microsoft’s account-identification guidance also points to account-recovery and username-finding tools.
