macOS Tahoe 26 gives you useful Lock Screen controls, but they are split between Wallpaper, Appearance, and Lock Screen in System Settings. You can change the background that feeds the Lock Screen, control the large clock, choose its font and weight, select a screen saver, tune Liquid Glass styling, and adjust locking and login behavior. Tahoe still does not provide an iPhone-style Lock Screen editor with widgets or a separate, officially supported Lock Screen image picker.
These steps apply to Macs running macOS Tahoe 26. The normal Lock Screen, screen saver, login window, and FileVault pre-boot screen are different stages, so a setting that affects one may not affect the others.
Before you start: identify the screen you are changing
- Lock Screen: Appears when you choose Apple menu > Lock Screen, press Touch ID, use a Lock Screen key, or let the Mac lock after inactivity.
- Screen saver: An animated or photographic display shown after inactivity, potentially before the display turns off.
- Login window: The interface for selecting a user or entering credentials.
- FileVault pre-boot screen: The startup unlock screen shown before macOS loads. It is not the normal Lock Screen and has separate, much more limited customization.
Apple’s controls are documented across its Lock Screen, security and login, and screen saver guides.
1. Choose the wallpaper behind the Lock Screen
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Wallpaper. Tahoe offers Dynamic Wallpapers, Your Photos, Landscape, Cityscape, Underwater and Earth aerials, Shuffle Aerials, Pictures, and Colors. You can add an image from Photos, select a file, or add a Finder folder, Photos album, or folder of images. Apple also supports using an image from Finder or the web as your desktop wallpaper. See Apple’s wallpaper instructions.

- Please note: Compatible with MacBook Air 13.6" (M4/M3/M2 Chip, 2022-2026)
- High definition transparency film that ensures maximum resolution
- Real touch sensitivity for a natural feel that provides flawless touch screen accuracy
- Protects your screen from daily scratches, dust and scrapes
- Include 3 pcs screen protectors
The standard interface does not include a separate “Lock Screen wallpaper” picker. In practice, the wallpaper configuration supplies the background used in the Lock Screen experience, so changing it can also affect the desktop and related screen-saver presentation.
Make the clock easier to read
- Use a dark, simple, or low-detail image if the translucent clock blends into a photograph.
- Keep important subjects away from the upper and central areas where the clock and authentication controls may appear.
- Use Show on all Spaces when you want a consistent background across Spaces and displays; otherwise check how your multi-display setup applies wallpaper.
2. Show, hide, or place the large clock
Go to System Settings > Wallpaper > Clock Appearance. Apple places the Lock Screen clock controls under Wallpaper rather than under the main Lock Screen pane.
- Open System Settings and choose Wallpaper.
- Click Clock Appearance.
- Choose whether the large clock appears on the Lock Screen, the screen saver and Lock Screen, or neither where those options are offered.
- Select the available placement option, then lock the Mac to preview it.
Use Lock Screen-only when you do not want a large clock on an idle screen saver. Choose both when the Mac doubles as a visible clock. Select Never for a minimal screen or when the clock interferes with the image. Tahoe documents predefined placement, not arbitrary drag-and-drop positioning or free resizing. 3. Change the clock font and weight
In System Settings > Wallpaper > Clock Appearance, choose a clock font and adjust its weight from lighter to heavier text.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open System Settings.
- Select Wallpaper, then Clock Appearance.
- Choose the typeface and weight that remain legible over your wallpaper.
- Lock the Mac to check the result.
Apple documents font and weight controls, but not an independent transparency slider, unrestricted resizing, freeform positioning, or an iPhone-style clock color and material editor. User reports describe the same limitation, but they are not Apple’s formal specification: Apple Support Community and OS X Daily.
4. Add motion with aerial wallpapers and a screen saver
Set the screen saver separately at System Settings > Wallpaper > Screen Saver. Tahoe includes macOS slow-motion images, Landscape, Cityscape, Underwater and Earth aerials, Shuffle Aerials, personal photos, and other screen savers.

- Anti-glare (matte) film engineered to reduce glare and fingerprints
- Made from the high quality Japanese PET film for easy installation and no residue when removed
- Real touch sensitivity for a natural feel that provides flawless touch screen accuracy
- Protects your screen from daily scratches, dust and scrapes
- Include 3 pcs screen protectors
- Open System Settings > Wallpaper.
- Click Screen Saver.
- Select Custom, then choose an aerial, photo collection, or another screen saver.
- Configure shuffle or style options when available.
- Set when inactivity begins under System Settings > Lock Screen.
Some aerials can serve as both wallpaper and screen saver, creating a coordinated transition as the Mac becomes idle or locks. Aerial motion can use more display power than a still image, while personal photos may reveal private content in a shared space. The screen saver is not the authentication interface; security depends on the password requirement you set in Lock Screen.
See Apple’s screen saver guide and wallpaper guide.
5. Match the visual treatment with Appearance settings
Open System Settings > Appearance. Tahoe provides Auto, Light, and Dark appearance choices, plus Liquid Glass options such as Clear or Tinted, along with control colors, text highlight color, icon and widget style, folder color, and related wallpaper tinting.

Useful combinations
- Dark + dark still wallpaper: A subdued, low-glare setup.
- Light + bright wallpaper: A high-visibility appearance.
- Auto + Dynamic Wallpaper: Lets macOS change its light or dark treatment according to the system schedule; Apple notes that it may wait until the Mac has been idle for at least a minute.
- Clear Liquid Glass: A more transparent interface.
- Tinted Liquid Glass: A more opaque, color-influenced treatment.
Appearance settings affect macOS broadly, not only the Lock Screen. Documentation: Apple’s Appearance settings and appearance details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Change lock timing, security, and the login window
Open System Settings > Lock Screen. Battery and power-adapter inactivity fields can differ, which is especially important on a MacBook.
Controls you can set
- How long the Mac remains inactive before the display turns off on battery and while connected to power.
- When a password is required after the screen saver starts or the display turns off.
- Whether password hints are shown.
- Whether the login window shows a user list or requires Name and password.
- Whether Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons appear.
- Available accessibility options at login.
- A custom message displayed when the Mac is locked.
Add a locked-screen message
- Open System Settings > Lock Screen.
- Turn on Show message when locked.
- Click Set, enter the message, and click OK.
- Lock the Mac and verify how it appears.
For a portable Mac, set password requirement to Immediately or the shortest practical delay. Do not confuse the display-off timer with the password timer: they are separate settings. Avoid putting a home address, personal phone number, or other sensitive information in a message visible to anyone nearby. Details are in Apple’s Lock Screen settings guide and locking guide.

What Tahoe still does not let you customize
- There is no documented, supported separate Lock Screen image picker comparable to iPhone or iPad.
- There are no documented iPhone-style Lock Screen widgets.
- You cannot freely drag or resize the clock, or independently edit its translucent treatment with a documented control.
- The FileVault pre-boot authentication screen is not independently personalized through the normal Wallpaper or Lock Screen settings.
- Replacing files in
/Library/Caches/Desktop Picturesis an unsupported workaround. It can be reset by updates or wallpaper changes, may require permissions, can vary by account or display, and does not reliably change FileVault.
Community discussions distinguish the FileVault screen from the later Lock Screen and report that a separate image is not available through normal controls: FileVault discussion and separate wallpaper discussion.
Troubleshooting missing or unexpected controls
Clock Appearance is missing
- Confirm the Mac is running macOS Tahoe 26 or a later compatible release.
- Open Wallpaper, not only Lock Screen, and scroll through the pane.
- Make sure you are viewing the current user’s settings.
- Quit and reopen System Settings.
- Install the latest available macOS 26 point release before deeper troubleshooting.
The clock is hard to read
Choose a simpler or darker wallpaper, select a heavier weight, use Dark appearance, or hide the large clock. Tahoe does not document a control that removes only the glass effect.
The screen saver appears but the Mac is not secure
In System Settings > Lock Screen, verify Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off. A screen saver alone does not guarantee immediate authentication.
The wallpaper differs across Spaces or displays
Check whether Show on all Spaces is enabled in Wallpaper and review each connected display’s behavior.
You are looking at FileVault
If the screen appears immediately after startup, before macOS loads, it is the FileVault pre-boot screen rather than the normal Lock Screen. Normal Wallpaper and Lock Screen changes may not affect it.
