Microsoft Edge now calls Web Capture Screenshot. To remove the built-in feature in a managed Edge installation, disable the WebCaptureEnabled policy. On Windows, set it through Group Policy or the documented registry value; on macOS, set the preference key to false. The policy prevents access from the context menu, the Settings and more menu, and the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut.
What disabling Web Capture does
The Edge feature formerly named Web Capture is now named Screenshot. Microsoft describes it as a way to capture web pages and PDF content, annotate captures with inking tools, and use visual image search from captured content. The policy for this feature is still named WebCaptureEnabled.
When the policy is disabled, users cannot access Screenshot in Edge. It is the appropriate control if your goal is to remove the browser’s built-in capture feature, including its keyboard shortcut. It is not a general prohibition on taking screenshots with the operating system or other applications.
Microsoft lists the policy as supported in Edge for Windows and macOS from version 87 onward. It is not supported for Android or iOS. It is a mandatory-capable policy, supports dynamic policy refresh, is not per-profile, and applies to profiles signed in with a Microsoft account. Those scope details matter in managed environments: this is an administrative Edge policy, not a setting that each user toggles in the browser.

Disable Screenshot with Windows Group Policy
For centrally managed Windows computers, use the Edge administrative template. Microsoft identifies the policy as Enable the Screenshot (previously named Web Capture) feature in Microsoft Edge, with the unique policy name WebCaptureEnabled.
- Make sure the Microsoft Edge ADMX templates are available in your administrative policy store. The template file is
MSEdge.admx. - Open the Group Policy editor or the relevant domain policy editor, then go to Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
- Open Enable the Screenshot (previously named Web Capture) feature in Microsoft Edge.
- Set the policy to Disabled and apply the policy.
- Allow policy refresh to occur. If the browser interface does not reflect the change immediately, restart Edge.
Be careful with the policy wording: setting the policy to Disabled disables the Screenshot feature. The policy’s title describes whether the feature is enabled; the intended configuration is not to enable the policy, but to set its state to Disabled.
Set the Windows registry policy
Microsoft documents the mandatory registry location as SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge, with a value named WebCaptureEnabled of type REG_DWORD. A zero DWORD represents the disabled policy. On a managed Windows computer, an administrator can set that documented value from an elevated Command Prompt with:

reg add "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge" /v WebCaptureEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fThe command writes the policy value; it does not itself guarantee that an already-open browser immediately redraws its menus. Allow policy refresh, then restart Edge if the feature still appears. If you manage policies through Group Policy, prefer that deployment route rather than maintaining separate registry settings that could conflict with the organization’s policy configuration.
To remove the setting later, use the same management method that created it. In Group Policy, change the policy back to an appropriate unconfigured state according to your organization’s policy practice. For a registry-managed deployment, an administrator can remove the value rather than setting it to zero. Removing the value returns control to the applicable policy/default behavior; it does not mean Screenshot is permanently removed from Edge.
Disable Screenshot on macOS
Microsoft lists WebCaptureEnabled as the Edge preference key for macOS. Set the key to false through the configuration-management method used for your Mac deployment. The policy is supported on macOS from Edge version 87 onward.

The policy documentation specifies the preference key and value, but does not prescribe a particular Mac management product or command in the information covered here. Use your organization’s supported method for deploying Edge preferences rather than assuming that a Windows registry command or Group Policy procedure applies to macOS. If the interface does not update after the preference is applied, refresh policy or restart Edge.
Web Capture is not the same as website screen sharing
Disabling Screenshot with WebCaptureEnabled removes access to Edge’s built-in capture feature. It does not, by itself, block a website from requesting screen sharing through browser APIs.
For managed deployments that need to block websites from invoking screen-sharing APIs, Microsoft documents a separate policy, ScreenCaptureAllowed. It covers web screen-share APIs including getDisplayMedia() and the Desktop Capture extension API. Microsoft says that disabling this policy causes screen-share API calls to fail. That can prevent screen sharing in web meetings, so do not use it as a substitute for the narrower Screenshot control unless blocking website screen sharing is also the intended outcome.

Microsoft also documents origin policies that can allow screen sharing for matching origins despite the general setting. Account for those exceptions when configuring a screen-sharing restriction. Choose the policy according to the behavior you want to control:

A privacy setting that does not disable Screenshot
Edge also has a consumer privacy option called Allow Microsoft to save your browsing activity … to personalize Microsoft Edge and Microsoft services. It controls collection and use of browsing activity for personalization. Microsoft places it at Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Privacy. Changing that data-use option does not turn off Screenshot; use the feature-specific policy when you need the capture UI disabled.
Check the result and troubleshoot
- The Screenshot command or shortcut still appears: Confirm that you configured
WebCaptureEnabled, notScreenCaptureAllowed. Verify that the policy is set to Disabled in Group Policy or that the registry value is a zeroREG_DWORD. Allow policy refresh and restart Edge if necessary. - The policy is missing in Group Policy: Confirm that the Microsoft Edge administrative templates are in the policy store and that the
MSEdge.admxtemplate is available. The policy path is Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge. - You set a privacy option but Screenshot remains available: The browsing-activity personalization toggle controls data use, not access to the Screenshot feature. Configure
WebCaptureEnabledinstead. - Screen sharing in a meeting still works: That is expected if you disabled only
WebCaptureEnabled. Website screen sharing uses separate APIs and is controlled byScreenCaptureAllowed, subject to the documented origin-policy behavior. - Screen sharing stopped when you only wanted to remove Screenshot: Review whether
ScreenCaptureAllowedwas changed. Restore the screen-sharing configuration required by your organization, and useWebCaptureEnabledfor the built-in Edge feature. - You are configuring a phone or tablet: Microsoft does not list this policy as supported on Android or iOS. The Windows and macOS instructions should not be treated as mobile configuration steps.

Will disabling Screenshot delete captures a user already saved?
The policy description establishes that users cannot access the feature when it is disabled; it does not state that existing saved files are deleted.
Does the policy block screenshots taken outside Edge?
No. It controls access to Edge’s built-in Screenshot feature, not operating-system capture tools or other screenshot applications.
