How to Autosave Screenshots in Windows 11

To autosave screenshots locally in Windows 11, use Snipping Tool and check its automatic-save settings: open Snipping Tool, select See more, then Settings. Microsoft says captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. If you want a cloud backup as well, include Pictures in OneDrive backup; the old dedicated screenshot-saving toggle is no longer available.

Set up automatic local saving in Snipping Tool

  1. Open Snipping Tool from Start.
  2. Capture a snip. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the capture overlay, then select the area or capture mode you need.
  3. To review automatic saving or change the default Screenshots folder, open Snipping Tool, select See more, and choose Settings.
  4. Check the automatic-save setting and the default Screenshots folder shown there. Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. If you want a different default folder, use the folder setting in Snipping Tool.

Microsoft’s instructions describe the setting path as Snipping Tool > See more > Settings, but do not establish that every Windows 11 installation shows identical labels. If your screen differs, use the Settings page in the Snipping Tool installed on your PC rather than relying on a label from another version. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions

Know the difference between capture, saving, and backup

These are separate steps. A shortcut starts a capture; automatic saving creates a local image file; OneDrive backup syncs files from a folder that is included in backup. A capture sent only to the clipboard is not, by itself, a saved file.

What you want What to use Where the result goes
Start a region or screen capture Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay The shortcut opens the capture interface; check Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting for local file creation.
Put a full-screen image on the clipboard Print Screen The clipboard. Microsoft documents this as copying the screen image, not as a guarantee that a file has been saved.
Keep captured snips as local files Snipping Tool’s automatic-save behavior The Screenshots folder, or the default folder configured in Snipping Tool.
Back up screenshots through OneDrive Include Pictures in OneDrive folder backup Files in a backed-up folder are synced through OneDrive; this is backup, not the capture action itself.

Microsoft documents the Print Screen clipboard behavior in its instructions for copying window or screen contents. The key distinction is that clipboard contents and a file in a folder are not interchangeable: if you need a file after capture, confirm Snipping Tool’s automatic-save behavior.

Choose between a local screenshot and OneDrive backup

Use local automatic saving when you want a screenshot file on the PC after making a snip. Use OneDrive folder backup when you also want files in a backed-up folder synced through your OneDrive setup. One does not replace the other: automatic save handles file creation, while folder backup handles syncing the files in that folder.

The old OneDrive setting called “Save screenshots to OneDrive” is no longer available. Microsoft’s current guidance is to make sure the Pictures folder is included in OneDrive backup if you want screenshots in that backed-up folder included. The support guidance does not specify account-specific storage limits or prices. Microsoft’s OneDrive screenshot guidance

Check where a screenshot was saved

  1. After making a snip, check the Screenshots folder identified by Snipping Tool’s Settings page.
  2. If you changed the default Screenshots folder, check the folder displayed in that setting rather than assuming the image is in its former location.
  3. If you expected the image in OneDrive, check whether Pictures is included in OneDrive backup and whether you are looking in the backed-up folder, not just at clipboard contents.

The available Microsoft guidance identifies the default as the Screenshots folder but does not establish one absolute folder path for every Windows 11 installation. The Snipping Tool setting on your PC is the practical reference for the configured destination.

Troubleshooting autosave

  • A screenshot appears to vanish after pressing Print Screen. Print Screen puts a screen image in the clipboard. It does not, on its own, confirm a file was created. Use Snipping Tool’s capture overlay and check its automatic-save setting when you need a file.
  • A snip is not in the folder you expected. Open Snipping Tool > See more > Settings and check the default Screenshots folder. The configured folder may differ from the one you were checking.
  • The OneDrive screenshot toggle is missing. That dedicated “Save screenshots to OneDrive” control has been retired. For backup, check OneDrive’s folder backup settings and include Pictures.
  • OneDrive is not backing up the screenshot folder you expect. Confirm that Pictures is included in OneDrive backup, and verify that the screenshot file is actually saved in the folder you expect. Folder backup syncs files in a backed-up folder; it does not make a clipboard capture into a file.
  • Your Snipping Tool labels do not match a guide. Microsoft’s instructions do not promise identical labels across all Windows 11 installations. Look for the automatic-save and default Screenshots folder options in the installed app’s Settings page.

Windows Snipping Tool is the right route for capturing the Windows screen. If your actual task is to capture a website from a script or AI agent, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server; it captures a URL, not the Windows desktop. The example below requests a WebP screenshot of stripe.com. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
