If Dompdf shows a box, blank space, or replacement character instead of the Indian rupee sign, first check the font glyph: the font Dompdf actually uses must contain ₹. Then verify that the HTML and input data are UTF-8, and confirm any custom font is available to Dompdf. Dompdf’s core PDF fonts support Windows ANSI; its README recommends bundled DejaVu TrueType fonts for broader Unicode coverage, but that does not guarantee every installed font build or configuration contains the rupee glyph. Render and inspect a PDF using your deployed version and setup.
Why Dompdf can lose the ₹ symbol
A browser preview and a Dompdf-generated PDF do not necessarily use the same fonts or rendering path. A browser may silently fall back to a local font that contains the glyph, while Dompdf selects a different font for the PDF. Dompdf’s README says its core PDF fonts support Windows ANSI only and that characters outside that range need an external font. It identifies the bundled DejaVu TrueType fonts as a way to get broader Unicode coverage.
That makes font coverage the first thing to investigate, not a guarantee that any specific font file or Dompdf installation will render U+20B9 correctly. A second likely source is the text input: the template, data, and HTML passed to the renderer should consistently be UTF-8. If you use a custom font, Dompdf also needs to be able to read and load it.
Fix it in order
1. Make the input UTF-8
Check the whole path from source data to the HTML passed into Dompdf: template files, database or API values, and any intermediate string conversions. Save source files as UTF-8 and make the page encoding explicit. Use the literal rupee sign or its numeric HTML character reference consistently:

<p>Amount due: ₹1,250</p>These are two ways to represent the same character in HTML; choose one for a given template rather than mixing representations without a reason. The character reference does not add a missing glyph to a font. If the input is already correct, replacing ₹ with ₹ will not fix a font-coverage problem.
2. Select a font with the required glyph
Try Dompdf’s bundled DejaVu Sans explicitly in the CSS:

Check the font files in the package actually deployed to your server; do not assume Dompdf can use fonts installed on your development computer or available to your browser. If the rupee sign still fails, verify that the exact DejaVu file and font weight selected by your configuration contain the glyph. The documentation describes broad Unicode coverage, not a guarantee for every build or setup.
For a page that uses several font rules, inspect the effective CSS around the amount as well as the global body rule. A more specific selector, a bold weight, or a nested element can select a different family or font file. Set an explicit family on the element containing the amount if needed, then render again.

3. Load a custom TrueType font correctly
If you need a particular typeface, make the font available to Dompdf and load it using the method documented for your project. Dompdf’s font guide discusses CSS @font-face and font registration. Check both the font path and its permissions: a path that works on a developer’s machine may not exist in the deployed environment, and the Dompdf font-cache directory must be writable where required.

Follow the font-loading process for your installed Dompdf version, use a path accessible to the renderer, and confirm that the chosen font file includes U+20B9. Avoid relying on a fallback family unless you have verified which font Dompdf selects.

4. Render a minimal test with the production setup
Before changing a full invoice or report, render a small HTML page using the same installed Dompdf version, font files, CSS, and configuration as the real job. Include both the rupee sign and ordinary Latin text, for example ₹ 1,250.00 — Invoice total. Inspect the resulting PDF itself; an HTML browser preview only confirms that the browser can display the character.
If the test succeeds, add the same known-good font rule to the real template and compare the generated PDF. If it fails, keep the test minimal and change one thing at a time: input representation, font family, selected weight, or font loading. That makes it easier to identify whether the failure follows the content or the font setup.

Common fixes that do not solve the underlying problem
- Changing only the symbol to an HTML entity:
₹represents ₹ in HTML, but cannot provide a font glyph that is missing. - Changing only the browser font: Dompdf renders the PDF using fonts available to its own process, not necessarily the fonts available to a user’s browser.
- Assuming a declared CSS font loaded: The font path may be wrong or unreadable, the cache may not be writable, or another CSS rule may select a different family or weight.
- Judging by a single PDF viewer: If viewers display different results, compare the same generated file in another viewer and verify the selected font and PDF output. Do not treat a browser preview as proof of successful PDF rendering.
Reliability and deployment checks
Once the minimal test works, keep a small regression test in the PDF generation workflow: generate a sample containing ₹ with the same deployed fonts and inspect the output after changes to Dompdf, CSS, fonts, or deployment configuration. The practical goal is to verify the exact combination you ship, because the general documentation does not establish that every version, font build, or rendering configuration supports this glyph.
- Ensure the production artifact includes the intended font file.
- Use paths and permissions that work for the process generating PDFs, not just for an interactive developer account.
- Confirm the font cache can be written where the configured Dompdf setup requires it.
- Test all styles used for amounts, including bold or other weights, rather than only testing normal text.
- Inspect actual generated PDFs after a deployment or font change.
