Where to find deleted files and restore them
Open the Files app on your Chromebook and select Trash. If the file is still there, use the available restore option to return it from Trash. Google says most deleted files go to Trash and are permanently deleted after 30 days.
Google ChromeOS Community manager Shreya P. described the timing in 2022: “you’ll have 30 days to change your mind before the file is permanently deleted.” The 30-day period is a recovery window, not a promise that a file can be recovered afterward.
What happens when the 30 days are up?
Files in Trash are automatically permanently deleted after 30 days. If you are certain you no longer need a file, you can empty Trash manually to remove it sooner; doing so also ends the chance to restore those files through Trash.

Does Chromebook Trash cover every kind of file?
No. Google’s ChromeOS 108 feature notes explicitly say Files app Trash does not support Play, Linux, or Windows file areas. Deletion and recovery behavior therefore depends on where the file was stored. Browser history, cookies, cache, and other Chrome data are also separate from Files app Trash and are governed by different controls.

Why might the Trash section be missing?
On managed Chromebooks, an administrator can disable the Files app Trash section with the TrashEnabled policy. Google added that control in the Chrome 109 Enterprise and Education release notes. If your device is managed by a school or workplace and Trash is not visible, ask its administrator whether the policy is in use. Also consider whether the deleted item came from a Play, Linux, or Windows file area, which the feature does not support.
