The current Roku Streaming Stick HD (model 3840R) requires a 5-volt, 1-amp power source—5 watts of available capacity. Roku lists its typical streaming use at about 2.2 watts. A TV’s USB port may provide enough power, but a reputable 5V/1A wall adapter is the dependable fallback when it does not.
Roku Stick power requirements at a glance
| Model | Roku’s input specification | Published typical streaming use | Best power approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streaming Stick HD (3840R) | 5V/1A (5W source capacity) | Approximately 2.2W while streaming | Supplied cable with a capable TV USB port or a 5V/1A wall adapter |
| Streaming Stick 4K | 5V/1A (5W source capacity) | Less than 3.5W while streaming 4K UHD | Supplied cable with a capable TV USB port or a 5V/1A wall adapter |
| Older Streaming Stick generations | Check the model-specific label or Roku support page | May differ by generation | Match the original specification |
Roku publishes the HD specification on its Streaming Stick product page and the 4K figures on its Streaming Stick 4K product page. The 5W figure describes the power source’s capacity, not a constant 5W draw by the player.
What 5V/1A means
Voltage is the electrical pressure the Roku expects. Amps describe how much current a power source can provide. Multiplying 5 volts by 1 amp gives 5 watts of available capacity:
5V × 1A = 5W
The Roku does not automatically consume the full rating of the adapter. A 5V charger rated for 2A or 3A has more available capacity; the Roku draws what it needs. Do not substitute a charger with a different voltage. The clearest replacement specification is a reputable USB adapter that maintains 5V and at least 1A.

Can a Roku Stick run from a TV USB port?
Yes—provided the television’s USB port supplies enough power. Roku supports TV USB power, but warns that some ports are insufficient. A USB label alone does not guarantee the port’s current capability; the television manufacturer determines that.
- Connect the Roku Stick to an HDMI input.
- Connect the supplied Roku USB power cable to the stick.
- Plug the other end into the TV’s USB port.
- Select that HDMI input and complete setup.
- Continue using the port if the Roku starts normally without a low-power warning or flashing red light.
- Move to wall power if any power symptoms appear.
Roku’s general setup guidance is at its model setup page. HDMI carries audio and video; it does not power the stick by itself.

Signs the TV USB port is too weak
- An on-screen “low power” or “insufficient power” warning
- A flashing red light
- Crashes, freezes or other unstable behavior
- Repeated restarts or failure to boot
A solid red light is generally associated with overheating rather than insufficient power. Unplug a hot Roku and let it cool before testing it again. Roku explains these distinctions in its low-power troubleshooting guidance.
How to fix a low-power Roku
- Unplug the Roku for about 10 seconds.
- Reconnect it with the original or supplied Roku USB cable.
- Try another USB port on the television.
- If the warning or flashing light continues, connect the cable to a wall adapter.
- Use a reputable 5V/1A adapter (or one rated for more current at the same 5V).
- If wall power does not solve the problem, inspect the cable, adapter and Roku power connector for damage, and check for overheating.
Roku cautions that some replacement cables cannot carry enough current, and an incompatible cable can prevent startup or produce error 022. Avoid long, low-quality USB extensions because voltage can drop over distance. The supplied cable remains the safest choice.

Why the Roku restarts when the TV turns on
Many televisions remove power from their USB ports when switched off or placed in standby. A Roku powered from that port then loses power and boots again when the television wakes. Wall power keeps the player supplied continuously and avoids that particular power cycle; Roku notes that this can preserve cached app data and reduce startup delays. See Roku’s restart explanation.
How much electricity does a Roku Stick use?
For the current HD model, Roku’s approximately 2.2W typical streaming figure can be used for a rough estimate—not as a measured maximum or an annual guarantee.

- 2.2W × 5 hours per day = 11 watt-hours per day
- 11Wh × 365 days ≈ 4.015 kilowatt-hours per year
Actual energy depends on the model, streaming hours, startup, wireless activity, software updates and idle behavior. The 4K model’s published typical figure is below 3.5W while streaming 4K UHD, so 4K operation can use more than HD, but the difference is model- and activity-dependent. To estimate cost, multiply your calculated kilowatt-hours by your local electricity rate.

| Setup | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| TV USB | No nearby outlet; cleaner installation; may shut down with the TV | Port may be underpowered or cut power in standby; can cause warnings and reboots |
| 5V/1A wall adapter | Most reliable; avoids weak-port warnings and standby power cuts | Needs an outlet and adds cable clutter; remains powered while the TV is off |
| Switched outlet or smart plug | Lets you cut power without unplugging | The Roku must boot whenever power is restored |
Roku players are designed to remain connected and use little power while idle. Some models enter an automatic low-power mode. Roku also describes smart plugs and ordinary switched power strips at its power-on/off support page; they are optional, not a remedy for an underpowered USB port.

What to buy or change
- TV USB works normally: Keep using it with the supplied cable.
- Low-power warning or flashing red light: Switch to a wall outlet and a 5V/1A adapter.
- Roku reboots whenever the TV starts: Use wall power so standby cannot interrupt it.
- Lost adapter: Buy a reputable 5V USB adapter rated at 1A or higher, while retaining the correct voltage.
- Lost or damaged cable: Use the cable supplied for your model or a Roku-compatible replacement that can carry adequate current.
- Want complete shutdown: Use a switched outlet or smart plug, knowing the Roku will reboot after power is restored.
Model and accessory cautions
“Roku Stick” covers multiple generations, including Streaming Stick+, Streaming Stick 4K and Streaming Stick 4K+. Do not assume an old unit has exactly the same published consumption as the current products. Check the model number and the label on its original adapter or consult the model-specific Roku documentation. A current model’s 5V/1A guidance should not be silently applied to every historical device.
Similarly, do not judge a cable by its connector alone. Roku states that some cables may not provide sufficient current. If a Roku works from one cable and not another, replace the suspect cable before replacing the player.
Bottom line
Use a 5V/1A power source for a current Roku Stick. A TV USB port is acceptable only when it powers the stick without warnings, flashing red lights or restarts. If it fails any of those tests, the practical fix is the supplied cable connected to a reliable wall adapter. The current HD stick typically uses about 2.2W while streaming, so its 5W input specification is a capacity requirement—not a statement that it continuously consumes 5W.
