Start with Settings → Discussion, then check the affected content’s own Allow Comments setting. If the form is still missing, investigate the old-post auto-close rule, plugins, and the active theme.
Fix the setting that is actually closing comments
- Check the site-wide default. In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings → Discussion. Enable Allow people to post comments on new articles if newly published posts should accept comments. This is only the default for new content; it does not automatically change every existing post.
- Review automatic closure for older posts. Find Automatically close comments on articles older than [X] days. Disable the option, or increase the number of days, if older posts should remain open. WordPress says this rule disables the comment form after the specified period while leaving previously approved comments visible.
- Save the settings. Click Save Changes, then test the affected post in a logged-out browser window.
Reopen comments on one post or page
- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Open the Discussion panel and select Allow Comments.
- Click Update, Publish, or Save Draft, depending on the content status.
WordPress’s documented instruction is: “On the post or page you wish to add comments to, find the ‘Discussion’ box, and check ‘Allow Comments.’” Exact labels can vary with the WordPress version, editor, site language, or installed plugins.
If the Discussion panel is missing
In the editor, open Screen Options and enable the Discussion box. Return to the editor, select Allow Comments, and save the item.
Reopen comments on many posts at once
Use Bulk Edit instead of opening every post individually:
#1 Best Overall
- Go to Posts → All Posts or Pages → All Pages.
- Select the items you want to change.
- Choose Edit in Bulk Actions, then click Apply.
- Set Comments to Allow.
- Click Update.
For a single item, choose Quick Edit from the content list and enable Allow Comments. Bulk and Quick Edit change each item’s stored setting; they do not change the site-wide default.
Why comments can be closed even when Allow Comments is checked
The old-post rule overrides the apparent post setting
WordPress stores a default comment status and separate controls for closing comments on older content. The relevant options are default_comment_status, close_comments_for_old_posts, and close_comments_days_old. Core evaluates the age rule before deciding whether comments are open, so an old post can show Allow Comments in the editor while its public form remains unavailable.

A plugin is filtering the result
The comments_open() check is filterable. A comments, membership, security, caching, or anti-spam plugin can therefore alter the result after the normal settings are saved. Do not assume a particular plugin is responsible until you reproduce the problem with it disabled.
The theme is not rendering the form
A theme can omit or replace the comment template even when WordPress reports that comments are open. This is different from WordPress deliberately closing comments: the post may have an open status, but the page template never outputs the form.
Plugin and theme troubleshooting
- Record the current settings and, if possible, make a backup or use a staging site.
- Temporarily deactivate comment-related and anti-spam plugins one at a time.
- After each deactivation, clear the site and browser caches and test the post while logged out.
- When the form returns, reactivate plugins individually to identify the conflict. Update or reconfigure the conflicting plugin rather than leaving unrelated protections disabled.
- If no plugin explains the behavior, switch temporarily to a current default WordPress theme on staging. If the form appears, compare the theme’s single-post template and comment template with the theme author’s supported implementation.
WordPress documentation recommends this one-plugin-at-a-time approach and checking the theme’s comment template when the expected form is not rendered. Akismet and similar tools help control spam; they are not a primary fix for a post that WordPress considers closed.
What this means for the REST API and headless sites
The REST API comments controller checks whether comments_open( $post->ID ) is true. If it is false, WordPress returns the rest_comment_closed error with HTTP status 403. A headless application therefore cannot create a normal comment until the post is reopened, the age rule is changed, or a deliberate, documented customization changes that behavior.

Choose the safest fix for your situation
| Situation | Best first action | Risk and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| One post or page | Editor → Discussion → Allow Comments | Changes only that item. |
| One item in a list | Quick Edit → Allow Comments | Still requires an individual change. |
| A selected group | Bulk Edit → Comments → Allow | Check the selection carefully before updating. |
| All future posts | Settings → Discussion → Allow people to post comments on new articles | Does not repair existing posts. |
| Older posts closing automatically | Disable or raise the automatic age threshold | Reopening old content can increase moderation and spam workload. |
| Settings appear correct | Isolate plugins, then test the active theme | Requires controlled changes and cache clearing. |
Before editing the database or code
Direct database edits and custom filters can force a comment status, but they bypass the dashboard’s normal safeguards and can be overwritten by later configuration. Use a backup, staging environment, and change control. First determine whether the cause is the per-post value, the old-post rule, or a plugin or theme filter; then apply the narrowest reversible fix.

Final checks
- View the post while logged out or in a private browser window.
- Confirm the post is not older than the configured auto-close period.
- Test both the standard page and any cached or headless version.
- Check whether existing approved comments remain visible; auto-closing prevents new comments but does not remove those comments.
- Plan moderation and anti-spam controls before reopening a large archive.
