12 Sitemap Crawlers and SEO Coverage Tools: What Each One Checks

To check how Google processed a submitted sitemap, start with the Google Search Console Sitemaps report. To find technical and internal-link issues across a site, run an independent crawler such as Screaming Frog or Sitebulb. These tools answer different questions: a sitemap lists URLs you want search engines to discover, but it does not prove those URLs were crawled or indexed.

The options below are a practical shortlist, not a hands-on ranking. They include full-site crawlers as well as narrower reporting and page-checking tools, so choose by the audit you need, the scale and rendering requirements of your site, and how you plan to use the results.

What should a sitemap crawler help you verify?

A sitemap is a file that gives search engines information about pages and other files on a site. Google says it can help search engines discover URLs, but it does not guarantee that every listed item will be crawled or indexed. A URL appearing in a sitemap, a crawler export, or a discovered-page count is not proof of search visibility.

There are two distinct jobs behind “checking a sitemap”:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check Google’s handling of a submitted sitemap. Use Search Console to see its reported fetch and parsing status and the number of parsed page URLs.
  • Audit the website independently. Use a crawler to inspect reachable pages, internal links, status codes, indexability signals, canonicals, and, where needed, JavaScript-rendered content.

Using both can reveal differences between the URLs you intend to expose, the pages your site links to, and the indexed view reported by Google. Neither tool automatically fixes indexing.

12 sitemap and SEO coverage tools

This set is organized by role rather than by a claim that one product is universally best. The Semrush comparison referenced below is vendor-published editorial content dated May 22, 2026, not an independent performance test. Product plans, limits, and features can change; confirm current terms with each provider.

1. Google Search Console Sitemaps report

Google Search Console’s Sitemaps report is the free first stop for the question “What does Google report about the sitemap I submitted?” It shows statuses such as “Success,” “Has errors,” or “Couldn’t fetch,” along with the number of parsed page URLs. You can also filter the Page indexing report by sitemap.

This is not a general-purpose site crawler. The report covers sitemaps submitted through the report or API for the current property; a sitemap discovered or submitted another way may not appear. Check that the property matches the exact site variant, including http versus https and www versus non-www, when an expected sitemap is missing.

2. Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a configurable desktop crawler for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its official feature list includes technical SEO audits, JavaScript rendering, XML and image sitemap generation, and integrations with Google Analytics, Search Console, and PageSpeed. The vendor offers a free crawl allowance of 500 URLs; verify current paid crawl allowances and locale-specific pricing before choosing a plan.

It is a sensible option when you want direct control over a site crawl and the ability to inspect technical details rather than only Google’s submitted-sitemap status.

3. Sitebulb Desktop

Sitebulb Desktop pairs crawling with visualizations, prioritized hints, and reporting intended to make findings easier to interpret and share. Sitebulb states that Desktop audits support up to 500,000 URLs by default. That is a vendor-stated capacity, not a guarantee of a particular crawl speed: practical limits depend on the computer’s specifications and the site being crawled.

4. Sitebulb Cloud

Sitebulb Cloud is the browser-based option for shared crawl data and larger audits. Sitebulb states a capacity of up to 10 million URLs for Cloud audits. Treat that as a plan-level vendor statement rather than an independently tested result, and check current limits and pricing before budgeting.

5. Semrush Site Audit

Semrush Site Audit sits within a broader SEO platform, making it worth considering if your team wants site auditing alongside other SEO functions. It may not replace a specialist crawler when you need specific crawl controls. The Semrush pricing page includes Site Audit in its SEO plans; current plan prices, limits, and inclusions should be checked directly.

6. Ahrefs Site Audit

Ahrefs Site Audit is the product to distinguish from Ahrefs’ free sitemap generator. Ahrefs describes Site Audit as a crawl and issue-diagnosis product. Its free sitemap generator instead builds from pages already discovered by Ahrefs’ crawler, has a stated 1,000-URL output limit, and may omit newly added pages until the crawler discovers them. Generating a sitemap and auditing a live site are different jobs.

7. SE Ranking

SE Ranking appears in Semrush’s May 22, 2026 comparison as a technical-audit option with progress tracking. That comparison listed a 14-day trial at that time; confirm whether the trial and current plan terms still apply in your region before relying on them. The available evidence does not establish a basis for ranking its crawl speed or accuracy against other tools.

8. Morningscore

Morningscore is included in the same dated Semrush comparison as a beginner-friendly technical audit option. Semrush listed a 14-day trial in its comparison; verify current availability and plan details with the vendor. Consider it in the context of your preferred workflow and reporting rather than assuming a specific crawl capability not established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. SEO Pro Extension

Semrush’s comparison presents SEO Pro Extension as a free quick on-page check. It is a narrower page-checking aid, not a full-site sitemap crawler. Use it for a quick inspection of an individual page, not as a substitute for sitemap processing data or a site-wide crawl.

10. Netpeak Spider

Netpeak Spider is included in Semrush’s comparison as focused crawl-audit software. That comparison listed a three-day trial at the time; check the vendor’s current offering, supported scale, features, and plan terms before selecting it. The available information does not support more detailed claims about its limits or comparative performance.

11. Conductor Monitoring

Semrush’s comparison identifies Conductor Monitoring as an enterprise technical and crawl monitoring option with custom pricing. It is more relevant to organizations evaluating ongoing monitoring and enterprise workflows than to someone seeking only a free sitemap status check. Confirm availability and terms with the vendor.

12. Botify

Sitebulb cites Botify as an example of web-based enterprise-scale crawling. That supports treating it as an enterprise crawler to evaluate, but not a detailed feature or price comparison. Request current product information from the vendor to assess fit for your site and workflow.

How to choose between them

Start with the question you need answered, then match the tool to the work:

Need Starting point What to keep in mind
Google’s reported sitemap fetch and parse status Search Console Sitemaps report It covers sitemaps submitted through the report or API for the current property; it is not an independent site crawl.
Configurable technical crawl and JavaScript rendering Screaming Frog SEO Spider Desktop resources matter; its free allowance is 500 URLs according to the vendor, so check paid terms for larger work.
Visual explanations and stakeholder reporting Sitebulb Desktop Practical capacity depends on the machine; stated audit limits are vendor figures.
Shared, cloud-based crawling at larger stated limits Sitebulb Cloud Check current plan limits and price; published capacity is not a speed benchmark.
Auditing within a broader SEO platform Semrush Site Audit or Ahrefs Site Audit Compare current inclusions and plan limits; do not confuse Ahrefs’ sitemap generator with its audit crawler.
Quick single-page checks SEO Pro Extension It is not a substitute for full-site crawling or Google’s sitemap report.
Enterprise monitoring or large-scale crawling Conductor Monitoring or Botify Confirm current availability, scope, pricing, and workflow fit with the vendor.

For any candidate, check whether it can reach the pages you care about, whether it renders JavaScript when needed, what crawl limits apply, whether results can be shared or scheduled, what integrations matter to your team, and the total current cost. No independent cross-vendor crawl-speed or accuracy benchmark is established here, so avoid choosing on unsupported performance comparisons.

A reliable sitemap and coverage validation workflow

  1. Confirm the exact property and sitemap URL. In Search Console, open the property matching your canonical site version and inspect the Sitemaps report. If an entry is missing, check whether it was submitted through the report or API and whether you selected the right http/https and www/non-www property.
  2. Read the status and parse count. Note whether Google reports “Success,” “Has errors,” or “Couldn’t fetch,” and inspect the parsed page URL count. A success status and a parsed count do not establish that every URL was crawled or indexed.
  3. Compare sitemap URLs with the intended URL set. Investigate redirects, erroring URLs, parameter duplicates, and noncanonical URLs rather than trying to maximize the number of entries. A sitemap should reflect the URLs you intend search engines to consider, not every address a crawler can find.
  4. Run an independent crawl. Choose a crawler that fits the site’s scale and rendering needs. Inspect internal discovery, indexability directives, canonical signals, response status codes, and JavaScript-dependent content where relevant.
  5. Compare the crawl with Search Console indexing data. A URL present in the sitemap or crawler export is not necessarily indexed. Use the Page indexing report, including its sitemap filter, to investigate the difference between intended, crawlable, and indexed URLs.
  6. Recheck after changes. Once you correct the sitemap or site issues, verify that the sitemap is fetched successfully and review the relevant indexing data again. A crawler diagnoses; it does not make Google index a URL.

Common sitemap-crawl problems and fixes

The sitemap is absent from the report

Check the selected Search Console property and exact site variant, then confirm whether the sitemap was submitted through the report or API. A sitemap found by Google through another method may not be listed in this report.

The report says “Couldn’t fetch”

Check that the submitted sitemap URL is correct and accessible, and review the reported error details in Search Console. After correcting an access or URL problem, resubmit or recheck the sitemap status rather than assuming a crawler export confirms Google fetched it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The report says “Success,” but some URLs are not indexed

“Success” describes sitemap processing, not a promise of crawling or indexing. Inspect the Page indexing report and compare the affected URLs with their canonical, indexability, response, and internal-link signals.

The crawler finds fewer URLs than expected

Check whether important pages are linked from crawlable pages, whether crawl scope or URL handling excludes them, and whether content depends on JavaScript rendering. A sitemap report and an independent crawler discover URLs differently, so compare the actual URL lists rather than treating their counts as interchangeable.

The crawler finds URLs that should not be in the sitemap

Review redirects, errors, parameter variants, and canonical targets. Remove or correct entries that do not belong in the intended canonical, indexable URL set; a larger sitemap is not automatically a better one.

A large desktop crawl stalls or strains the machine

Desktop crawl capacity depends on the computer’s resources. Consider reducing scope for diagnosis or evaluating a cloud workflow if shared access or larger audits are needed. Published maximum URL limits do not guarantee the same practical result for every site.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a sitemap crawler. It can help when a coverage investigation calls for a visual capture of a page: cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.

One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Frequently asked questions

Does submitting a sitemap guarantee indexing?

No. Google says a sitemap can help it discover URLs, but it does not guarantee crawling or indexing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a sitemap generator instead of a crawler?

Not for a technical audit. A generator creates a URL list; a crawler visits pages to inspect site structure and issues. Ahrefs’ free generator, for example, uses pages its crawler has already discovered rather than performing a live crawl of your site.

Are the listed crawl limits and trials guaranteed?

No. Limits and trial terms are vendor-stated and can change. Check the current official product and pricing pages for your region and plan before purchasing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
