Choose the method that matches what you want to show: use WordPress.com’s Latest Instagram Posts block for an updating feed, use a self-hosted plugin that explicitly provides a widget for sidebar placement, or use Meta’s official plugin when you need to embed one Instagram post, reel, or profile. These are different solutions; an individual-post embed is not a feed grid.
First, identify your WordPress setup and Instagram content
| What you need | Best-fit route | Sidebar suitability |
|---|---|---|
| An automatically updating grid of several posts on WordPress.com | Latest Instagram Posts block | Use the block in a widget-capable site area or template supported by your WordPress.com plan |
| A feed grid on self-hosted WordPress | A plugin whose current documentation lists a widget, such as Spotlight Social Feeds | Direct widget placement, subject to the plugin and theme |
| One selected image, carousel, reel, or profile | Meta Embeds for WordPress | Place the embed block or URL in a sidebar-compatible widget area |
Use the Latest Instagram Posts block on WordPress.com
WordPress.com documents this block as an automatically updating grid connected to an Instagram account. The account must be a free Instagram professional account: either Business or Creator.
Connect the account
- Open the WordPress.com editor for a page, post, or template.
- Open the block inserter and add Latest Instagram Posts.
- Select Connect to Instagram.
- Approve the connection in Instagram, then return to the editor.
On plugin-enabled WordPress.com sites, the site privacy setting must be Public or Coming Soon; a Private site cannot complete the documented connection flow.
Configure the feed
Use the block settings to choose the connected account, number of posts, number of columns, spacing between posts, and whether posts stack on mobile. WordPress.com allows up to two Instagram accounts, one per block, but each account requires a separate Instagram login. Collaborative collections are not included.

Place it in a sidebar
If your theme exposes a sidebar in the Site Editor, edit the relevant template or template part, select the sidebar area, and insert the block there. In a classic widget screen, use the available block-enabled widget area and add the Latest Instagram Posts block. The exact sidebar controls vary by theme, so confirm the block appears in the site’s actual sidebar preview before publishing.
Add a feed widget on self-hosted WordPress
Self-hosted WordPress does not provide one universal, current Instagram feed widget. Select a plugin whose documentation explicitly supports the placement you intend to use. The WordPress.org listing for Spotlight Social Feeds says it supports Instagram feeds through a block, shortcode, and widget, with photos, videos, reels, gallery posts, column and post-count controls, and responsive display customization. Those are vendor-listed features; confirm the current listing and plugin instructions before installation.

Install and place the widget
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for the chosen Instagram feed plugin and verify that its current listing names a widget (not only a block or shortcode).
- Install and activate it.
- Follow the plugin’s current account-connection instructions and select the Instagram content and layout options it provides.
- Go to Appearance → Widgets (or the Site Editor’s Widgets area), open the desired sidebar, and add the plugin’s Instagram widget.
- Save, then check the sidebar on desktop and mobile. Adjust columns, post count, spacing, and responsive settings in the plugin if available.
For agency or client work, Spotlight’s WordPress.org listing advises using its access-token generator instead of requesting a client’s private Instagram password. Do not assume that a token or connection method used by one plugin works with another.
Embed one Instagram post with Meta’s official plugin
When you want one specific item rather than a changing feed, Meta’s Meta Embeds for WordPress plugin supports Instagram image and carousel post URLs, reel URLs, and profile URLs. Its documented workflow does not describe a customizable multi-post grid widget.
Recommended Free Tools
Insert the embed
- Install and activate Meta Embeds for WordPress.
- Paste a supported Instagram URL on its own line in the block editor, or use the plugin’s dedicated embed block. Classic Editor users can paste the URL on its own line as well.
- Publish or update the page, post, or widget area containing the embed.
The repository lists WordPress 5.9+ and PHP 7.4+ as requirements; check the current repository because minimum versions can change. Meta states that this plugin requires no access token or configuration. Internally, WordPress makes a server-side request to Meta’s oEmbed API, and the returned HTML loads Instagram’s embed script on the site frontend.

WordPress.org records that Facebook closed the oEmbed endpoint formerly used for Instagram links after October 24, 2020. Its documentation says the former Instagram Embed block therefore no longer works and that applications using Facebook/Instagram endpoints would need a developer account, app ID, and authentication token. Treat legacy tutorials that ask you to paste an Instagram URL into the old core embed block as outdated.

WordPress also keeps a provider whitelist and applies security restrictions to discovered HTML and video embeds from non-whitelisted sites. Pasting arbitrary script or raw embed HTML is not a dependable universal workaround.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The feed block will not connect
- Confirm the Instagram account is Business or Creator, not Personal.
- On plugin-enabled WordPress.com, change site privacy from Private to Public or Coming Soon while completing the connection.
- Sign in to the correct Instagram account; a second account requires its own login in the documented two-block setup.
The widget is missing from the sidebar
- Check that the plugin documentation explicitly supports a widget; a shortcode-only plugin will not automatically appear in the Widgets screen.
- Verify that the theme actually registers a sidebar or widget area.
- Clear page, CDN, and plugin caches after saving the widget.
The single-post embed is blank or incomplete
- Use a supported image, carousel, reel, or profile URL and place it on its own line.
- Check that the site meets the plugin’s currently listed WordPress and PHP minimums.
- Remember that the embed depends on Meta’s service, the post’s availability, and the account’s privacy settings; a private or removed post cannot display publicly.
Which option should you choose?
- WordPress.com feed: choose Latest Instagram Posts when you have a professional account and want built-in post-count and layout controls.
- Self-hosted sidebar feed: choose a maintained plugin that specifically documents widget placement, then follow that plugin’s connection method.
- One item: choose Meta Embeds for WordPress for a single post, reel, carousel, or profile rather than a feed grid.
