If Streamlabs Window Capture is missing a program or showing a black image, first open the target app, make sure it is not minimized, and select it again in the source’s window list. Then check the cause that matches your symptom: app capture restrictions, the GPU assigned to Streamlabs on a hybrid-graphics laptop, or a version-specific macOS issue. A black Studio Mode Editor pane has a separate, narrowly scoped HDR workaround.
Identify what is failing before changing settings
“Window Capture not working” can mean several different things: the app is absent from the target list, the source is listed but black, the capture goes blank intermittently, or only the Studio Mode Editor pane is black while the Output pane works. These are not interchangeable symptoms, and a fix for one may not apply to another.
Before troubleshooting, note whether you are using Windows or macOS, your Streamlabs Desktop version, whether the target app is open and unminimized, and whether the computer is a laptop with switchable graphics. If only one app is affected, that also points toward an app-specific capture restriction rather than a general Streamlabs problem.
Choose the capture source that matches the target
| Source | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Window Capture | One application window | You want one app, rather than the whole desktop, in the scene. |
| Display Capture | The whole screen or monitor | You need to show the desktop or multiple windows. |
| Game Capture | A game | You are capturing a game and want the game-specific source. |
| Screen Capture | A selectable capture target through Streamlabs’ unified source | You want to choose among available capture targets from one source. |
Streamlabs describes Window Capture as capturing one app window, Display Capture as capturing the whole screen, and Game Capture as intended for games. Its unified Screen Capture source can select from available targets. If you chose Game Capture for an ordinary app window, or Window Capture when you meant to show the full desktop, switch to the matching source before diagnosing black-screen settings.

Fix a window that does not appear in the list
- Open the target application. Streamlabs says the program must be open and running before it can be selected.
- Unminimize it. A minimized app may not be available as a selectable target.
- Reopen the source properties. Select the existing Window Capture source and open its properties, or add a Screen Capture source if you want to choose from that source’s available target cards.
- Select the intended window again. Choose the app in the Window dropdown or among the available targets. If it was launched after Streamlabs, refreshing the selection by reopening the properties can help you check the current list.
- Confirm the window before streaming. Check the selected target in the preview, especially if it contains private information.
If the program is open and unminimized but still absent, continue with app restrictions and GPU assignment rather than repeatedly changing unrelated Game Capture settings.
Check whether the application permits capture
Some programs require special screen-recording permissions, and some prevent particular elements from being captured. That can produce a missing target or a window whose content is partly or entirely black. Streamlabs does not establish that a Streamlabs setting can expose protected content, so do not assume there is a universal bypass.
- If only one program is affected, check that program’s own help and permission prompts.
- If the app appears but some content stays black, consider whether the program intentionally restricts capture of that content.
- If other windows capture normally, treat the problem as app-specific until evidence points elsewhere.
On macOS, check whether Streamlabs Desktop has the screen-recording permission required by the system and review any permission prompt. The available guidance here does not establish a current, complete macOS permission-navigation workflow, so use the labels shown by your installed macOS version rather than relying on an assumed menu path.
On a hybrid-graphics laptop, check Streamlabs’ GPU assignment
A laptop with both integrated and high-performance graphics may run Streamlabs on one GPU at a time. Streamlabs documents that this choice can affect which capture sources are available: its guidance recommends integrated or power-saving graphics for Window Capture and Display Capture, and high-performance graphics for Game Capture.

The Streamlabs guide’s menu directions were written for older Windows versions, including Windows 10, so the exact navigation may differ on a current system. Use your current Windows graphics settings or the laptop manufacturer’s graphics utility to find the app-specific GPU preference, then select the GPU appropriate to the source you are troubleshooting. Restart Streamlabs if the change does not take effect immediately.
Do not treat the recommendation as a universal performance rule: it is specifically about the documented capture-source availability issue. If you are troubleshooting Game Capture instead, the same guide points to high-performance graphics for that use.
Keep Game Capture black-screen fixes scoped to games
Streamlabs’ black-screen troubleshooting guide addresses Game Capture, not every Window Capture failure. Apply its game-specific checks only when you are actually trying to capture a game. Those checks include deleting and re-adding the Game Capture source, running Streamlabs as administrator, choosing a specific-window capture mode or hotkey, toggling the anti-cheat hook, disabling third-party game overlays, installing the Visual C++ Redistributable, updating drivers and software, or trying borderless fullscreen.
Some games cannot be captured with Game Capture. Streamlabs suggests Window Capture for some games running in borderless fullscreen, but that is not a universal remedy for ordinary application-window capture. If the target is a non-game app, start with the window-selection, permission, and GPU checks above.

Check the macOS version-specific incident
Streamlabs marked a macOS Screen Capture issue as resolved in Streamlabs Desktop 1.19.3, with August 20, 2025 given as the resolution date. The reported symptoms were inability to capture programs and a missing “Show fullscreen and hidden windows / applications” option. If those symptoms match, check that you are not running a version older than 1.19.3. If they persist on a newer version, contact current Streamlabs support rather than assuming the historical incident remains unresolved.
Use the HDR workaround only for the Studio Mode Editor symptom
Streamlabs’ September 20, 2026 notice describes a black screen in the Studio Mode Editor while the Output pane still shows sources. For that specific symptom, its workaround is to disable Windows HDR in Display settings. This notice does not establish HDR as a general cause of Window Capture failure; do not apply the workaround just because an app window is black or missing.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for Streamlabs Window Capture: it captures a web page by URL, not an arbitrary desktop application window. If your goal is a clean screenshot of a web page rather than a live Streamlabs scene, one GET request can save the result as an image. The API accepts image formats including PNG, JPEG, and WebP, or can return a PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Plans include the same features. Visit ScreenshotNeo for product details, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely checks | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| App missing from the window list | App is closed or minimized; capture restrictions; laptop GPU assignment | Open and unminimize it, select it again, then check permissions or GPU choice. |
| Window is listed but black | Program-level capture restriction or permission; wrong source for the target | Check whether the program permits capture and confirm you selected Window Capture or Screen Capture as appropriate. |
| Game Capture is black | Game-specific capture compatibility | Use Streamlabs’ Game Capture troubleshooting steps rather than treating them as general Window Capture fixes. |
| Only Studio Mode Editor is black; Output works | The specific HDR-related Editor issue described by Streamlabs | Try disabling Windows HDR as Streamlabs’ workaround. |
| macOS cannot capture programs and the named option is missing | The historical issue resolved in Streamlabs Desktop 1.19.3 | Check the installed version; if it persists on a newer version, ask Streamlabs support. |
Reliability and performance considerations
Window Capture is the more focused choice when a scene should show a single app rather than the whole monitor. Display Capture exposes the entire screen, so check the visible desktop before streaming. For a hybrid-graphics laptop, the GPU recommendation depends on capture type; changing GPU assignment to address one source can affect which other source is available. If a failure occurs only in one app, investigate app-specific restrictions before making broad system changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Window Capture show content that an app intentionally blocks from capture?
Not necessarily. Streamlabs notes that some programs prevent certain elements from being captured; a source setting is not established as a way to expose protected content.
Does the Windows HDR workaround fix a black Window Capture source?
It is documented for a different, specific symptom: a black Studio Mode Editor pane while Output still shows sources.
