How to Use curl_cffi for Web Scraping in Python

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install curl_cffi with pip install curl_cffi --upgrade, then make requests through its requests-like API and pass impersonate="chrome" when a site responds differently to Python’s default HTTP/TLS fingerprint. This can help with transport-fingerprint compatibility, but it does not run JavaScript or guarantee access to a site. The walkthrough below covers requests, sessions, proxies, asynchronous work, limits, and common failures.

What curl_cffi does—and what it does not do

curl_cffi is a Python HTTP client whose browser impersonation feature can match browser TLS signatures or JA3 fingerprints. In practical terms, this changes how a request looks at the transport layer; it is not a browser window and does not render pages, execute JavaScript, or automatically interact with a site.

  • Useful for: HTTP-based collection when the server’s response depends on TLS or related HTTP fingerprints, and when you need proxies, sessions, or asynchronous requests.
  • Not a substitute for: a JavaScript-capable browser when content appears only after scripts execute, user interaction, or a browser challenge.
  • Not a guarantee: matching a browser fingerprint cannot ensure a site or anti-bot service will allow the request.

Use scraping only where you have permission, and follow the site’s terms and robots guidance. A successful HTTP response is not permission to collect or reuse its contents.

Install curl_cffi and make your first request

The project’s quick-start guidance requires Python 3.10 or newer. Install or upgrade the package in the same Python environment that will run your scraper:

python -m pip install curl_cffi --upgrade

Then request a page with a built-in Chrome profile:

from curl_cffi import requests

response = requests.get(
    "https://example.com",
    impersonate="chrome",
)
print(response.status_code)
print(response.text[:200])

The response exposes familiar HTTP-client properties: inspect status_code before treating the body as the page you expected, and use text for decoded text or content for bytes. The example is a basic request, not a promise that every site will return the same content without headers, cookies, or other state.

Choose and maintain an impersonation profile

For the simplest case, use the unversioned "chrome" profile. The documentation describes unversioned chrome, safari, and safari_ios names as following the latest profile available as the package is updated. Built-in targets also include versioned Chrome profiles and other browser families; use a supported profile that fits the target rather than assuming every browser/version string is valid.

Impersonation is most relevant when a server reacts to a Python client’s TLS/HTTP fingerprint. It does not make the request identical to all behavior of a real browser: it does not supply a DOM, execute page scripts, or solve interactive checks. Keep the package and its browser profiles current when a target’s behavior changes. Custom ja3, akamai, and extra_fp values are advanced options; use them only when you have a documented target fingerprint, not as guessed values to try at random.

Use proxies, sessions, and repeated requests

Configure an HTTP or SOCKS proxy

Pass proxy addresses in a proxies mapping. For example, to route HTTPS requests through a local HTTP proxy:

from curl_cffi import requests

url = "https://example.com"
proxies = {
    "https": "http://localhost:3128",
}
response = requests.get(
    url,
    impersonate="chrome",
    proxies=proxies,
)
print(response.status_code)

The project also supports SOCKS proxies. Use the proxy scheme and endpoint supplied by your proxy service; an unreachable proxy, incorrect scheme, or invalid credentials can prevent a request before it reaches the website. Proxy routing does not by itself change what a target permits.

Reuse a session when requests share state

For a sequence of requests, a session can retain cookies and connection state. That matters when a site sets a cookie on one response and expects it on a later request. Create a session for the related set of requests rather than treating every page fetch as an isolated visit. Confirm the session’s cookie behavior against the site you are authorized to access; do not assume that a cookie from one domain or workflow applies everywhere.

Scale collection with asyncio carefully

The project advertises asyncio support, proxy rotation in asynchronous requests, native retry support, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, and WebSockets. Those capabilities can help with larger or more specialized clients, but they do not make unrestricted concurrency safe or appropriate. Start with a small number of simultaneous requests, monitor responses and failures, and increase gradually only when your permissions and the target’s guidance allow it.

Use asynchronous requests when you have many independent network waits and can control concurrency. Prefer a session or other shared client state where requests belong to the same workflow. If a task requires JavaScript-rendered content, switching from synchronous to asynchronous HTTP will not provide a browser runtime; use a browser automation approach that is permitted for that target instead.

Retries can recover from transient network failures, but indiscriminate retries can amplify load or repeat a request the site has already processed. Retry only suitable failures, bound the attempts, and use backoff appropriate to your application. The project lists native retry support, but the exact configuration interface is not specified here; check the installed version’s API before wiring retry parameters into production code.

Recognize when HTTP scraping is the wrong tool

What you need What curl_cffi can contribute What it does not provide by itself
Fetch an HTTP response Requests-like synchronous calls, sessions, and proxy configuration A guarantee that the page is accessible or that its content is complete
Match a browser-like transport fingerprint Built-in impersonation profiles and custom fingerprint options JavaScript execution, DOM rendering, or a guarantee against anti-bot decisions
Collect many pages with network waits Async support, proxy rotation in asynchronous requests, and retry support are advertised Permission to increase load, or a universal safe concurrency level
Capture a rendered visual page HTTP fetching can retrieve resources or markup needed by your own workflow A rendered screenshot or PDF; those require a browser-rendering/capture workflow

For transport-level scraping, curl_cffi is distinct from clients such as requests or httpx because its documentation describes browser TLS-signature or JA3 impersonation. The project also lists HTTP/2, HTTP/3, WebSockets, and both synchronous and asynchronous use. Choose based on the actual requirement: a different HTTP client may be simpler if you do not need fingerprint impersonation, while pages dependent on JavaScript need a real browser runtime.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is to obtain a clean screenshot rather than parse response HTML, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a general-purpose replacement for an HTTP scraping client.

Here is a one-call capture of the target page; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month—no card required.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'curl_cffi': install with python -m pip install curl_cffi --upgrade using the interpreter that runs the script. If using a virtual environment, activate it before installing.
  • Python version or installation failure: the quick-start guidance specifies Python 3.10 or newer. Check python --version and install into a compatible environment.
  • The profile argument is rejected: check the installed package’s supported target names and use a listed built-in profile. Versioned profiles and available targets can change as the package updates.
  • You get a challenge, denial, or unexpected content: impersonation changes transport fingerprints; it does not guarantee the site will allow the request. Check permissions, expected headers and cookies, and whether the content requires JavaScript or interaction. Do not treat repeated retries or guessed fingerprint values as a universal fix.
  • Proxy connection fails: verify that the proxy is running and reachable, that its address uses the right scheme, and that any required authentication is valid. Test direct access only if permitted and appropriate.
  • Response is successful but data is missing: inspect the status, response body, and redirects; the server may return a minimal or script-dependent page rather than the data you expected. If the content is rendered by JavaScript, use an authorized browser-rendering workflow.
  • Requests are slow or intermittent: network conditions, proxy performance, target throttling, and server responses all affect latency. Reduce concurrency, make retry behavior bounded, and avoid assuming the project’s qualitative performance description is a benchmark: no dated numerical benchmark figure is published in the reviewed page.

Performance, reliability, and cost decisions

curl_cffi is installed as a Python package with pip; the reviewed project material gives no package price or numerical benchmark to use for capacity planning. Its documentation characterizes it qualitatively as much faster than requests/httpx and on par with aiohttp/pycurl, but without a dated measured figure. Actual throughput depends on the target, proxy, network, concurrency, and response size, so benchmark your permitted workload rather than translating that description into a speed multiplier.

Build reliability around the whole request path: handle network errors, inspect HTTP status and body, keep proxy configuration valid, and bound retry and concurrency behavior. A browser-like fingerprint can influence transport acceptance, but it cannot eliminate server-side changes, rate limits, or application-level checks. For scraping, the principal cost and risk controls are the infrastructure and proxy costs you choose, the request volume your permission allows, and the engineering needed to parse and validate responses.
