To add a border to one image, select its Image block in the WordPress editor and configure the available options under Border in the block settings sidebar. If you want the same outline on images across your site—or your theme does not expose those controls—use theme-level styling instead.
Add a border to one image in the editor
- Select the image. In the post or page editor, click the image so its Image block is active.
- Open the block settings. If the settings sidebar is hidden, select the settings icon beside the Publish or Update controls. WordPress documents this sidebar workflow in its Border & Shadow Settings overview.
- Set the border. Find the Image block’s Border controls and choose the properties available in your editor, such as color, width, and radius. The Image block may also offer shadow settings. Which controls appear can vary with the active theme; see WordPress’s Image block documentation.
- Check the result. Preview the image in the editor and on the published page to confirm the outline looks as intended.
Radius controls corner shape: increasing it rounds the corners. Radius alone does not draw a visible outline; configure border properties such as width, style, and color for that.

Why the border controls may be missing
The active theme influences which border controls WordPress exposes in the editor. WordPress’s Theme Handbook explains that settings.border determines which border controls a theme makes available; it does not define the visual style by itself. If the controls are absent, ask the theme maintainer whether the theme supports them, or use a theme-appropriate CSS approach.
For a theme-wide design, WordPress supports styling the core/image block through theme.json. Its documented example sets a 6px radius and generates .wp-block-image img { border-radius: 6px; }—that rounds corners but does not create a visible outline. Add a simple outline with CSS
A basic CSS rule for Image block images is:

}The Image block reference identifies .wp-block-image img as a border-related selector. This selector is broad: it targets Image block images site-wide. To style only one image, use a more specific selector and a way to scope it through your theme or block setup. The place to add custom CSS depends on the site and theme, so there is no universal paste location.
