Choose residential proxies when a target is protected, datacenter proxies for fast volume on relatively open sites, and ISP proxies for some logged-in workflows. Then compare success on your targets, geographic precision, latency, session controls, included scraping tools, and total cost—not just advertised IP-pool size.
Provider comparisons and benchmark figures are useful for forming a shortlist, not for predicting your results. Run a representative trial or a small production-shaped workload before moving all traffic, and review the target site’s terms and applicable law.
What makes an IPRoyal alternative suitable?
Start with the workload rather than a provider logo. A catalog monitor, a localized search collector, an authenticated account workflow, and a JavaScript-heavy application impose different requirements.
Match the proxy type to the target
- Residential proxies: generally suited to protected targets because requests originate from consumer-assigned addresses. Expect higher variability and cost than basic datacenter traffic.
- Datacenter proxies: useful for fast, high-volume collection on lenient targets where datacenter addresses are accepted. They are often easier to scale and can have lower latency.
- ISP proxies: can fit some logged-in or long-lived sessions by combining relatively stable addresses with an ISP identity. Validate session duration and account compatibility on the target itself.
These are general vendor-guide recommendations, not guarantees. A target may rate-limit any category, and a site’s rules may prohibit automated access regardless of proxy type.

Compare the controls that affect success
For each candidate, record target-site success rate, country and city precision, latency, traffic allowance, sticky-session behavior, rotation controls, authentication method, concurrency limits, and support for browser or API-based scraping. Add the cost of retries, parsing, storage, and engineering time. A large pool is not automatically better if the useful locations are scarce or the target rejects most addresses.
Shortlist: five alternatives and the workload each fits
| Provider | Why it belongs on the shortlist | Best comparison angle | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decodo | Residential, datacenter and other proxy offerings, plus a Web Scraping API and AI Parser. | Developer tooling, geographic targeting, trial experience and measured performance on your targets. | Its 2026 alternatives article is vendor-published and relays Proxyway results; verify current prices and methodology. |
| Bright Data | Proxy types combined with Web Unlocker, Web Scraper API, Scraping Browser, SERP API and prepared datasets. | Whether an integrated unlocking and scraping stack justifies its operational complexity and cost. | “Best” rankings and network claims in its guide are the provider’s own positioning. |
| Oxylabs | Large-network positioning and a range of scraping tools. | Scale, precise targeting, managed tooling and the minimum spend needed for your workload. | Review coverage and comparison figures are not substitutes for current official plan terms. |
| Webshare | Self-service proxy offering positioned as budget-friendly, including a free tier in a cited comparison. | Low-commitment evaluation, simple setup and predictable self-service operations. | Free-tier terms, prices and reported performance should be confirmed directly before adoption. |
| SOAX | Proxy service identified in independent comparison coverage with geographic targeting and scraping tools. | Location granularity and built-in collection features. | The available coverage provides fewer directly comparable details, so test it rather than infer parity. |
Decodo: a close, developer-oriented alternative
Decodo is the most direct candidate when you want proxy access alongside a Web Scraping API and AI Parser. That combination can reduce the amount of browser orchestration and extraction code you maintain. During a trial, compare the API’s output with your existing IPRoyal pipeline: status-code distribution, parsed-field accuracy, retry count, geographic match and time to first usable response.
What the published benchmark says
Decodo’s 2026 alternatives article reports figures attributed to Proxyway’s 2026 benchmark: 99.92% residential infrastructure success and a 0.53-second global response time for Decodo, versus 96.11% and 1.24 seconds for IPRoyal. The same article reports IPRoyal ahead on one IP-cleanliness metric. These are secondary-reported, vendor-published figures; the underlying methodology was not supplied here, and they should not be treated as a prediction for your target.
When to test Decodo first
- You need an API and parser rather than raw proxy endpoints alone.
- You can define a representative set of countries, URLs, response types and concurrency levels for a short trial.
- You want to compare managed extraction against your own browser or HTTP stack.
Bright Data: an integrated unlocking and data stack
Bright Data is worth evaluating when proxy infrastructure is only one part of the system. Its described portfolio includes Web Unlocker, a Web Scraper API, Scraping Browser for dynamic pages, a SERP API and prepared datasets. Those components can cover JavaScript rendering, search-result collection and prebuilt data delivery without assembling every layer yourself.

- Operational breadth: more managed components can reduce custom code but add account, configuration and cost complexity.
- Target precision: test the exact countries, cities, ASN or session behavior your project requires.
- Economics: price the complete path, including browser minutes, API calls, bandwidth, retries and any dataset refreshes—not only proxy traffic.
Bright Data’s provider-authored rankings are marketing positioning. Treat them as a description of the product’s intended fit, then verify with your own workload.
Oxylabs: scale and managed tooling
Oxylabs is commonly positioned as a large-network and tooling option. It may fit teams that need broad location coverage, target-specific controls or managed scraping products rather than a minimal proxy endpoint.
Validate the minimum viable spend
Ask for the smallest plan or trial that can reproduce your real concurrency, sticky-session length, geography mix and failure handling. A service designed for enterprise scale can be technically capable while still being uneconomical for a small collector. Comparison coverage also reports Proxyway figures for Oxylabs—99.93% residential infrastructure success and a 0.60-second response time—but those values are secondary reporting and not independently verified here.
Webshare: low-commitment self-service testing
Webshare is positioned in comparison coverage as self-service and budget-friendly, with a permanent free tier described by that source. This makes it a practical candidate for prototyping, development and low-volume jobs where you want to test request code before committing to a larger plan.
Questions to answer before production
- Does the free or entry plan include the countries and proxy types your target needs?
- What concurrency, bandwidth and rotation limits apply?
- Are support and replacement options adequate when a target changes its defenses?
- Does the effective cost remain low after retries and failed requests?
Because the cited free-tier and pricing details come from a competitor’s comparison article, confirm current terms on Webshare’s own site.
SOAX: consider it when targeting controls dominate
SOAX appears in independent comparison coverage as a proxy provider with scraping tools and geographic targeting. Include it when city-level or similarly granular location control is central to the project. The available evidence is less detailed than for the other candidates, so make the evaluation concrete: run the same URL set, locations, session durations and concurrency against SOAX and your incumbent.

How to run a fair IPRoyal-alternative trial
- Define success. Choose the fields you must extract, acceptable freshness, maximum error rate, latency objective, countries and session rules.
- Build a target sample. Include easy pages, authenticated pages if permitted, JavaScript-heavy pages, localized variants, pagination and known failure cases.
- Normalize the workload. Keep URL order, concurrency, timeout, retry budget, headers, parser and rendering mode the same for every provider.
- Measure useful outcomes. Track successful business responses, challenge or CAPTCHA rate, blank pages, timeouts, median and tail latency, bytes transferred, usable location rate and parsing accuracy.
- Calculate total cost. Include proxy traffic, API or browser charges, failed-request policy, retries, engineering time and storage. Separate billable requests from requests that produced usable data.
- Stress the session model. Test rotating and sticky sessions, cookie persistence, account logins and the longest session your application needs.
- Review compliance. Check the target’s terms, robots guidance where relevant, privacy obligations and applicable law. Do not use a proxy to bypass access controls you are not authorized to bypass.
- Run a canary. Send a small percentage of production-shaped traffic to the finalist for several days before migrating fully.
Reliability, performance and cost decisions
Measure success at the data layer
An HTTP 200 response can still be a block page, consent wall or incomplete render. Validate page identity and required fields, and classify results as usable, challenge, empty, timeout or parser failure. This produces a more honest comparison than counting connection-level successes.
Control concurrency and retries
Increase concurrency gradually. Watch for target-side throttling, provider queueing, connection exhaustion and rising tail latency. Use bounded exponential backoff and a retry budget; unlimited retries can multiply cost while worsening a block.
Account for geography and sessions
Measure the location actually observed by the target, not only the location selected in a dashboard. For logged-in workflows, verify cookie continuity, IP stickiness and account-security behavior. A cheaper rotating pool may be unsuitable if each request must remain in one session.
Or skip the browser setup
If your workload is collecting page images rather than HTML data, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and exposes whether a response was clean or not through its response headers. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
A single request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page and selector captures, lazy-image loading, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call and a usage API. Every feature is on every plan. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Many requests return challenges or CAPTCHAs
Check whether the target permits automated access, reduce concurrency, use the proxy category appropriate to the target, and verify that your headers, cookies and session policy match the authorized workflow. Do not treat a CAPTCHA as a signal to defeat an access control.
Responses are successful but data is empty
Inspect the body for a block, consent page or JavaScript shell. Add the provider’s browser or rendering product only when the target requires it, and validate the required fields before marking a request successful.
Best Value
Latency rises after switching
Compare the same country, protocol, timeout and concurrency. Check provider queueing, target response time, DNS and connection reuse. Test a nearby location only if your data requirements allow it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Sessions break after login
Use a sticky session where supported, preserve cookies, avoid changing location mid-session and confirm the target’s account-security policy. If the provider cannot offer the required session lifetime, it is the wrong fit even if its headline rate is lower.
The bill is higher than expected
Separate traffic from requests, retries, browser minutes and API calls. Cap retries, cache immutable pages, schedule only needed refreshes and compare cost per usable record rather than cost per request.
Bottom line
Shortlist Decodo for API-and-parser tooling, Bright Data for an integrated unlocking and data stack, Oxylabs for scale and managed controls, Webshare for low-commitment self-service testing, and SOAX when location granularity is the deciding factor. None is automatically better than IPRoyal: a controlled, representative trial is the reliable way to choose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose residential or datacenter proxies first?
Use residential proxies as the starting hypothesis for protected targets and datacenter proxies for high-volume, lenient targets, then validate both against the site’s actual response and terms.
Are the published Proxyway figures guarantees?
No. The figures cited here are reported second-hand in Decodo’s vendor-published 2026 article, and target behavior, methodology and conditions can differ.
Is a proxy service enough for JavaScript-heavy sites?
Not always. Test whether the provider’s browser, unlocking or scraping API renders the required content; otherwise you may need an authorized browser workflow.
