To make a WordPress featured image open its post when clicked, either wrap the thumbnail in a permalink anchor in the theme template, use the post_thumbnail_html filter, or configure a plugin. First decide whether you are changing archive cards, Query Loops, single-post images, or all of them, then check that the theme or block has not already added a link.
Choose the link destination and page context
A featured image (called a post thumbnail in WordPress theme development) can point to several different destinations:
- Post permalink: opens the article, page, or custom-post-type entry.
- Full-size image: useful for an image viewer or lightbox workflow.
- Attachment page: opens WordPress’s attachment page.
- No link: leaves the image as a visual element only.
Archive cards and Query Loop images commonly need the post permalink. A hero image on a single post may instead be intended to open the full-size file. Treat those contexts separately because a change that is correct for one can be wrong for the other.
Before changing anything, inspect the existing markup
- Confirm that the theme declares featured-image support; otherwise the Featured Image control may not appear in the editor.
- Open an archive card and a single post in a browser, then inspect the image element. If it is already inside an
<a>element, do not add another wrapper. - Check block markup, especially a Query Loop, because the block may already provide the link.
- List the content types that should be affected: posts, pages, and any custom post types enabled by the theme.
Nested anchors are invalid HTML and can produce confusing click behavior. After every change, inspect the rendered HTML and verify the destination.

Option 1: wrap the thumbnail in the theme loop
Use this method when you control the theme and want the link in one specific archive, card, or template. WordPress documents the following pattern:
<?php if ( has_post_thumbnail() ) : ?>
<a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>">
<?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?>
</a>
<?php endif; ?>
Place it in the relevant loop, where the current post is available. The link destination is that post’s permalink, and the condition prevents an empty image wrapper when no featured image exists.
WordPress’s theme guidance presents alternative approaches for linking to a post and linking to a larger image. Do not combine both alternatives in the same theme unless you deliberately want different, non-overlapping contexts.

Option 2: use the post_thumbnail_html filter
The filter approach wraps generated thumbnail HTML and can apply wherever that filter runs. WordPress’s documented example is:
add_filter( 'post_thumbnail_html', 'my_post_image_html', 10, 3 );
function my_post_image_html( $html, $post_id, $post_image_id ) {
$html = '<a href="' . get_permalink( $post_id ) . '">' . $html . '</a>';
return $html;
}
The callback receives the existing thumbnail HTML, the post ID, and the attachment ID. It uses the post ID to obtain the permalink.
When the filter is appropriate
- Use it when the same behavior is required across several places that generate post thumbnails.
- Review every context affected before enabling it; a broad filter can change single-post images, archives, widgets, or other output unexpectedly.
- Do not use it where the theme or a block already supplies an anchor.
The example is theme-development guidance, not a guarantee that it is safe for every theme. Test the actual pages your site generates.

Option 3: configure a plugin
The WordPress.org plugin Clickable Featured Image provides settings instead of requiring a template edit. Its listing describes separate controls for single posts/pages and archives or Query Loops:
| Context | Available destinations | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Single posts and pages | Full-size image, attachment page, or nowhere | The stated default is the full-size image, not the post permalink. |
| Archives and Query Loops | Post permalink or nowhere | The stated default is the post permalink. |
| Supported content types | Selectable post types | Choose which enabled post types receive the behavior. |
The plugin says it leaves images that are already linked alone, helping avoid duplicate anchors. Its listing reports support for the core Featured Image and Query Loop blocks and testing with GeneratePress and Twenty Twenty-Four; those are publisher-reported compatibility claims, not universal guarantees.
A separate plugin named Make featured image link to blog post describes adding a post_thumbnail_html function and advises checking whether the theme already provides the behavior. Because its listing has older and sparse product information, check its current maintenance status and fit before choosing it.

Which method should you use?
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One archive or card template | Template anchor | Scope is limited to the loop you edit. |
| Several thumbnail outputs under your control | post_thumbnail_html filter |
One callback can affect generated thumbnail HTML across its execution contexts. |
| No-code settings, block-aware behavior, or per-post-type controls | Clickable Featured Image | Its settings distinguish single images from archives and Query Loops. |
| Theme already links the image | No additional wrapper | Adding one can create nested anchors or override the intended destination. |
Test the result
- Open an archive page and click a featured image. Confirm that it opens the intended post permalink.
- Open a Query Loop, if your site uses one, and test its image separately.
- Open a single post or page and verify whether its image should open the post, the full-size file, an attachment page, or nowhere.
- Inspect the rendered HTML. Each linked image should have one appropriate
<a>wrapper, not nested anchors. - Repeat the checks for every selected post type, including custom post types.
Common failure modes
The image still opens the file
Check the single-post setting in the plugin. Its documented default for single images is the full-size file, while archive and Query Loop images default to the post permalink.
Clicks go to the wrong place
Identify which output generated the image. A template edit may affect only one loop, whereas a filter or plugin setting may affect multiple contexts. Confirm the actual href in the browser’s rendered HTML.
The markup contains nested links
Remove the extra wrapper or disable the overlapping setting. Inspect both the theme/block output and any filter or plugin that modifies thumbnail HTML.
