Use an interpreter-qualified command first: run python3 -m pip --version on CentOS or Ubuntu, or py -m pip --version on Windows. If that command works, pip is installed and attached to the Python interpreter you selected. If it fails, install pip with your operating system’s package manager on Linux, or bootstrap it with ensurepip on Windows.
What pip is and why the command matters
pip is Python’s reference package manager. The safest habit is to invoke it through the interpreter rather than typing a bare pip command. python3 -m pip means “run pip belonging to this Python 3 installation”; py -m pip performs the same job through the Windows Python launcher. This prevents a PATH entry from selecting a different Python installation.
- Linux verification:
python3 -m pip --version - Windows verification:
py -m pip --version - After activation of a virtual environment, continue using the environment’s interpreter-qualified command.
Before installing: identify the Python and release
On CentOS/RHEL, repository names and package-manager behavior vary by release. Check the distribution before copying commands:
cat /etc/os-release
python3 --version
On Ubuntu, confirm the interpreter and release:
lsb_release -a
python3 --version
On Windows, use Command Prompt or PowerShell:
py --version
py -0p
The last command lists registered Python versions and their executable paths. If more than one version is installed, you can target one explicitly, for example py -3.12 -m pip.

Install pip on Ubuntu
Install the distribution packages
Ubuntu’s documented package-manager route installs both pip and the virtual-environment support:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install python3-venv python3-pip
Enter your administrator password when prompted. apt update refreshes package metadata; it does not install software by itself. The second command installs Ubuntu’s packaged pip for Python 3 and the module needed to create isolated environments.
Verify the installation
python3 -m pip --version
A successful result prints a pip version and the directory containing its installation. If Ubuntu reports that the package cannot be found, check the release and enabled repositories, then run sudo apt update again.
Create an environment for a project
Installing application dependencies globally can conflict with Ubuntu’s managed Python files. Create an environment in the project directory instead:
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip
Your shell prompt normally gains a (.venv) prefix after activation. Install project packages only after that point:
python3 -m pip install requests
Leave the environment with deactivate. Re-enter it later with source .venv/bin/activate.

Install pip on CentOS or RHEL
Why CentOS needs release-specific instructions
CentOS and RHEL do not offer pip or wheel in their core repositories. The required repository and package-manager command depend on the exact release, so do not assume a CentOS 7 command applies to CentOS Stream, CentOS 8, or a RHEL installation.
Modern releases using DNF and EPEL
For releases where EPEL is the appropriate additional repository, enable the repository according to your distribution’s supported procedure, then install the packages:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
sudo dnf install python3-pip python3-wheel
If dnf cannot locate either package, EPEL may not be enabled for that release, or the repository configuration may not match the system. Confirm the release, architecture, and repository policy with your administrator before adding repositories.
CentOS 7 or RHEL 7 parallel-install example
The Python Packaging Authority documents a separate parallel-install example for CentOS 7/RHEL 7:
sudo yum install python34u python34u-wheel
This installs the distribution’s alternate Python 3.4 package names rather than replacing the system Python. Package availability is tied to the repositories configured for that older release; use the packages your enabled repositories actually provide.
Verify and isolate
python3 -m pip --version
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip
If the venv command fails because its module is missing, install the corresponding distribution package (often named python3-venv) through your release’s package manager. Avoid sudo pip install for ordinary application dependencies inside an environment; root-owned files make later upgrades and removal harder.

Verify the bundled pip first
Standard Python installers for Windows normally include pip. Open PowerShell or Command Prompt and run:
py -m pip --version
If you have several Python versions, target one with a version selector such as py -3.12 -m pip --version.
Bootstrap a missing pip with ensurepip
If the verification command says that pip is unavailable, use Python’s built-in bootstrap module:
py -m ensurepip --default-pip
py -m pip install --upgrade pip
Run the commands under the same Windows account and Python version that will use the packages. A corporate-managed installation may restrict writes; in that case, use a virtual environment in a writable project directory or ask the administrator to install the component.
Create and activate a Windows project environment
py -m venv .venv
.venvScriptsactivate
py -m pip install --upgrade pip
PowerShell may block locally created scripts under a restrictive execution policy. If activation is blocked, either use Command Prompt with .venvScriptsactivate.bat or follow your organization’s approved PowerShell policy. You can also invoke the environment directly without activation:
.venvScriptspython.exe -m pip install requests
Choosing the right installation method
| Method | Best use | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Ubuntu apt |
System integration on Ubuntu | pip follows Ubuntu’s package lifecycle and may not be the newest release. |
CentOS/RHEL dnf/yum |
Managed server installations | Requires release-compatible repositories; EPEL may be necessary. |
ensurepip |
Restoring pip in an existing Python installation or environment | It bootstraps pip but does not solve every system packaging or PATH issue. |
venv plus interpreter-qualified pip |
Application development | Requires activation or an explicit environment Python path. |
get-pip.py |
Last-resort bootstrap when supported methods fail | It does not coordinate with an operating-system or other package manager and can leave the system inconsistent. |
Common errors and fixes
“pip: command not found” or “‘pip’ is not recognized”
Do not start by editing PATH. Try the qualified command:
python3 -m pip --version
py -m pip --version
If that succeeds, use the qualified form for installs. If it fails, install the platform package or run ensurepip as described above. A bare pip may point to another Python version even when it exists.
“No module named pip”
The selected interpreter lacks pip. On Windows, run py -m ensurepip --default-pip. On Ubuntu or CentOS/RHEL, install the distribution’s pip package, then repeat the version check. Make sure you are checking the same interpreter that will run your program.
Recommended Free Tools
Permission denied or an externally managed environment
System Python may be owned by the operating system. Prefer a virtual environment and install there without sudo. Use administrator privileges only for the operating-system package installation itself.
Packages install but Python cannot import them
This is usually an interpreter mismatch. Compare:
python3 --version
python3 -m pip --version
python3 -c "import sys; print(sys.executable)"
On Windows, use the corresponding py commands. The pip location and executable path should belong to the interpreter you intend to run.
CentOS package unavailable
Check cat /etc/os-release, enabled repositories, and whether your release is still supported. EPEL and package names differ across releases. Do not substitute a repository built for another major version.
ensurepip is disabled or unavailable
Some distributors remove or disable the module. Use the operating-system package manager, create a fresh supported Python environment, or use get-pip.py only after downloading it securely and understanding that it can conflict with system package management.
Best Value
Operational practices after installation
- Record dependencies with
python3 -m pip freeze > requirements.txt(or the environment’s Windows interpreter). - Recreate the environment rather than mixing unrelated project dependencies into one global installation.
- Upgrade pip inside the environment with
python3 -m pip install --upgrade piporpy -m pip install --upgrade pip. - Use a controlled index, proxy, or certificate configuration when required by your organization; do not disable TLS verification as a quick fix.
- For automation, call the environment’s absolute interpreter path so the job does not depend on an interactive shell’s PATH.
Or skip the browser setup
If your Python work also needs automated website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request instead of configuring a browser. The API accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
Example using cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo also includes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I install pip globally or in a virtual environment?
Install the distribution package globally when you need system integration, then create a virtual environment for each application so its dependencies remain isolated.
Is get-pip.py the normal Windows installation method?
No. Windows Python installers normally include pip, and py -m ensurepip --default-pip is the built-in recovery method. Treat get-pip.py as a cautious fallback.
Why does pip install into the wrong Python version?
A bare pip command can resolve to a different PATH entry. Use python3 -m pip, py -m pip, or an environment’s explicit Python executable.
The Bottom Line
Install pip with apt on Ubuntu, a release-compatible dnf/yum setup on CentOS/RHEL, or verify and bootstrap it with py and ensurepip on Windows. For projects, use a virtual environment and keep every pip command tied to its interpreter.
