There is no single correct pixel size for a homepage image. Choose dimensions from the image’s rendered container, aspect ratio, responsive crop and performance budget. As a practical starting point, a desktop hero can be 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9), but that is an example—not a universal requirement. Many designs need a separate, taller mobile crop.
Start with the space the image actually occupies
Measure the homepage slot in the design at each important breakpoint. A full-width hero, a narrow banner and a card image have different requirements even on the same page. Export an image that is close to the largest rendered width rather than uploading an arbitrarily huge original.
- Hero: a prominent top-of-page image, often cropped with
object-fit: coveror a background image. - Banner: a shallower strip that usually needs a wide aspect ratio.
- Content or card image: a smaller rectangle whose width is determined by the column or grid.
- Full-screen background: may need a large source, but only when the design really displays it at that scale.
Also check whether your CMS or theme resizes uploads, limits file dimensions or recommends a particular crop. Those platform rules can override a generic starting point.
Useful starting dimensions (not standards)
| Use case | Example | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop hero | 1280 × 720 px (16:9) | A reasonable Shopify example for a conventional desktop hero; match your actual container. |
| Mobile hero | 800 × 1200 px (2:3) | Useful when the mobile layout is taller or needs a different composition; not a universal requirement. |
| Wide background | 2560 × 1400 px | Only for a genuinely large, full-screen-style background; wasteful for a smaller slot. |
These examples come from Shopify guidance, which presents dimensions as suggestions that may need adjustment for responsive sites. A 1280 × 720 file can be a sensible desktop source, yet still crop badly on a phone. Your final choice should satisfy the container’s width, height and focal point at every breakpoint.

Keep the subject in a safe area
Place faces, products and logos near the center or another region that survives the crop. Leave breathing room where navigation, a headline or a call-to-action will overlay the image. Test the exact CSS section height, not just the source file in an image editor.

Use an art-directed mobile image when needed
If desktop is a wide landscape scene and mobile needs a portrait composition, create a deliberate mobile crop. Do not download both files and hide one with CSS; use a <picture> element so the browser requests the appropriate source.
<picture>
<source media="(max-width: 700px)" srcset="/images/home-hero-mobile.webp">
<img src="/images/home-hero-desktop.webp"
alt="People collaborating around a table"
width="1280" height="720"
fetchpriority="high">
</picture>
Adjust the breakpoint and intrinsic dimensions to the files you actually publish. The width and height values reserve space and should reflect each image’s own proportions.
Preserve aspect ratio and reserve layout space
Give every important image intrinsic width and height attributes (or an equivalent CSS aspect ratio). Browsers can then allocate space before the file arrives, reducing layout movement. Keep the ratio intact as the image scales:

.hero img {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
/* Use only when the design deliberately crops */

.hero-frame img {

Setting a fixed height without deciding how cropping works is a common cause of clipped faces and unreadable overlay text. The browser should preserve the image’s proportions as it resizes; if you intentionally use cover, inspect the resulting crop at each breakpoint.
Serve the right bytes with responsive images
One 2560-pixel source sent to every phone wastes bandwidth. Generate a small set of widths and let the browser select one with srcset and sizes.
<img
src="/images/hero-1280.webp"
srcset="/images/hero-640.webp 640w,
/images/hero-960.webp 960w,
/images/hero-1280.webp 1280w,
/images/hero-1920.webp 1920w"
sizes="100vw"
width="1280" height="720"
alt="People collaborating around a table"
fetchpriority="high">
Set sizes to the slot’s real CSS width. For a hero that is 50% wide on large screens, a media condition is more accurate than 100vw, for example (min-width: 1000px) 50vw, 100vw. WebP or JPEG can work well for photographs; choose a format and quality that preserve text, edges and gradients in your particular image. Optimize the file after resizing rather than relying on a massive original.

Loading priority: hero images are different
An above-the-fold hero is usually part of the page’s largest visible element. Do not lazy-load that image by default. Keep it discoverable in the initial HTML and consider fetchpriority="high" when it is the important LCP image. Lazy-load images that begin below the fold instead. Preloading every image can compete with CSS, fonts and scripts, so reserve priority for the genuinely critical visual.
A practical sizing workflow
- Inspect the layout. Record the hero’s maximum CSS width and height on desktop, tablet and mobile.
- Choose the composition. Decide whether one crop can survive all widths or whether mobile needs its own art-directed file.
- Export source variants. Create widths around the largest rendered sizes, plus smaller variants for narrow screens.
- Add intrinsic dimensions. Put the correct width and height on each
imgand preserve its ratio in CSS. - Implement selection. Use
srcset/sizesfor scaling andpicturefor genuinely different crops. - Set loading behavior. Keep the first-screen hero eager; lazy-load later images.
- Test real breakpoints. Check desktop, tablet and phone widths, high-density screens, zoom, slow connections and both portrait and landscape orientation.
- Review the result. Confirm the focal point is visible, overlays remain legible, no layout jump occurs and the transferred file is appropriate for the rendered slot.
Common problems and fixes
The image looks blurry on a large monitor
The source may be smaller than the rendered CSS width or a high-density display may need more pixels. Add a larger variant, but do not send it to every viewport; let srcset choose.
The subject is cut off on phones
The mobile container probably has a different ratio or uses cover. Recompose a mobile crop with picture, move the focal point, or change the mobile section height.

The page jumps while loading
Missing intrinsic dimensions or an unstable container lets the image change layout after download. Supply accurate dimensions and reserve the intended space with CSS.
The hero loads slowly
Reduce the delivered width and quality, use modern compression, remove unnecessary metadata, and ensure the hero is not accidentally lazy-loaded. Check that an oversized CSS background is not being downloaded when an appropriately sized image would do.

When you need a rendered homepage image for documentation, QA or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page with one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options. This example captures a homepage as WebP:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Bottom line for choosing dimensions
Use 1280 × 720 as a desktop-hero starting point, not a specification. Let the rendered container and crop determine the final ratio, provide a mobile-specific composition when necessary, reserve layout space with intrinsic dimensions, and deliver responsive variants sized to the viewport. The best homepage image is the one that remains well-composed and fast at every size your design actually serves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every homepage hero be 16:9?
No. 16:9 is a practical desktop example. A hero with a different container ratio or a dedicated mobile composition should use dimensions that match that layout.
Is 2560 × 1400 better than 1280 × 720?
Only when the image is rendered very large or full-screen. A larger source does not improve a smaller slot and can increase download time.
Can I use one image file for desktop and mobile?
Yes, if the crop remains acceptable at both sizes. Use a picture element with a mobile source when the composition genuinely needs to change.
