1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a WooCommerce kit made from separately stocked products, use the Composite Products extension: create the component products, arrange them into steps, and define which choices customers can make. Use Product Add-Ons for personalization on one product, or Product Bundles for a fixed or constrained group. The right setup depends on what each choice represents in your inventory and how the finished order should be priced and fulfilled.
Choose the right kind of product builder
Before installing an extension, write down what customers can choose and what each choice means to your store. In particular, identify whether an option is a separate product with its own stock, whether later choices depend on earlier ones, whether customers need to enter text or upload a file, and whether the order should represent a kit or a group of items.
| Store requirement | WooCommerce path | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Customers select inventory-managed components to build a kit | Composite Products | Designed for configurable kits assembled from components. |
| Customers choose a constrained assortment, optional items, or quantities in a grouped offer | Product Bundles | Groups existing products and provides bundle and quantity controls. |
| Customers provide engraving, a message, a file, a date, or a paid extra for one product | Product Add-Ons | Adds fields and options to an existing product; the fields themselves are not separate stock-tracked products. |
| Customers should see related-product suggestions rather than configure a purchase | Product Recommendations | Surfaces related products; it is not a step-by-step builder. |
| Required rules or data behavior exceed extension features | Custom development | WooCommerce documents developer extension surfaces, but they do not provide a complete builder implementation. |
WooCommerce describes Composite Products as a way to create “customizable product kits that consist of multiple, inventory-managed components.” See the Composite Products documentation and WooCommerce’s extension comparison for the product-model distinctions.
Set up a Composite Products builder
This route is appropriate when each selectable component should be an actual WooCommerce product, with its own product data and inventory behavior.
#1 Best Overall
1. Prepare the component products
Create each selectable item as an existing simple or variable product before assembling the kit. Check that its price, variations, stock, shipping settings, visibility, and images are suitable for the way it will appear and be fulfilled in the builder. These checks are store-specific; the extension’s component model does not dictate identical catalog settings for every shop.
2. Create the composite and define its components
In the Composite Products configuration, add the component steps customers will work through, then assign the eligible products to each component. Set the selection behavior to match the decision at that step—for example, whether a component is required and whether customers can choose one or multiple options. WooCommerce’s setup documentation covers component settings, layouts, conditional visibility, and multiple-option selection.

3. Add conditional choices where needed
If a choice in one step determines what should be available later, configure conditional visibility for the affected component or options. Keep the rules aligned with the actual combinations you sell; test both the combinations that should appear and those that should remain unavailable.
4. Decide how pricing and shipping should work
Choose a pricing approach that matches the offer: verify how the composite’s price relates to its components, and confirm the displayed total as shoppers change selections. Set shipping behavior according to how the kit is packed and dispatched. Do not assume a single catalog-price or shipping arrangement suits every component-based product.

5. Test the complete purchase flow
Use a staging store to check the builder from product page through order processing. Include valid and invalid combinations, out-of-stock components, price changes, add-to-cart, cart edits, checkout, order line items, stock reduction, and refunds. Also check the active theme and other extensions. If a problem appears, WooCommerce’s conflict-testing guidance can help isolate a theme or plugin interaction.
When Bundles or Add-Ons are a better fit
Use Product Bundles for grouped offers
Choose Product Bundles when the product is fundamentally a group of existing items—for example, a constrained assortment or a package with optional products or quantity choices—rather than a sequence of interdependent configuration steps. Consult the Product Bundles documentation for its grouping and bundle controls.
Use Product Add-Ons for personalization
Choose Product Add-Ons when the shopper is customizing one existing product by entering information or selecting an extra, such as a message, engraving, date, upload, or paid option. These fields collect input or alter options on that product; they do not turn each field value into a separately stocked WooCommerce product. See the Product Add-Ons documentation.

WooCommerce’s Composite Products documentation lists WooCommerce 8.2+, PHP 7.4+, and WordPress 6.2+ as requirements. Its current extension listing gives a different minimum baseline—WordPress 6.8 and WooCommerce 10.6—and reports testing with WordPress 7.0 and WooCommerce 11.0. Because the published pages do not agree on minimums, use the live extension listing to confirm requirements for the version you intend to install.

When to build a custom product type
Consider custom development only if the supported extension models cannot express the rules, interface, or order behavior your store needs. WooCommerce’s developer documentation describes a custom product type editor surface, and its Store API overview covers public REST endpoints for customer-facing product, cart, and checkout functionality.
Those developer surfaces are starting points, not a complete recipe for a custom builder. A production implementation still needs an explicit design for validating customer selections, calculating prices, storing configuration in cart and order data, and reconciling selections with inventory. WooCommerce’s Store API extension documentation describes extension behavior, but does not by itself settle those store-specific decisions.
