Embedly Alternatives with Lower Per-URL Pricing: What the Numbers Really Mean

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Embedly lists a $119 monthly API plan with 10,000 Embed URLs and 10,000 Extract URLs included, then charges $9.50 per additional 10,000 URLs for either service—$0.00095 per additional request. LinkPreview has a lower commercial entry price at $25 per month, but it does not publish a monthly allowance or overage rate on its pricing page, so that is not proof of a lower per-URL cost. Iframely’s “hits” measure hours of URL activity, not one request per distinct URL. The right alternative depends on what is counted and which features your application uses.

Embedly’s baseline cost per URL

Embedly’s pricing page, checked September 30, 2026, lists an API plan at $119 per month. It includes 10,000 Embed URLs, 10,000 Extract URLs, and 25,000 Display images. The included Embed and Extract quantities are separate allowances, not a single 20,000-request pool.

Embedly’s pricing FAQ states: “Each URL sent to the Embed API through an HTTP request counts as one unit of monthly usage.” It applies the same one-request/one-unit rule to Extract. Once the applicable included allowance is exhausted, additional Embed or Extract usage costs $9.50 per 10,000 URLs, or $0.00095 per URL. Display overage is listed separately at $4 per 10,000 images ($0.0004 per image). These are the currently listed prices checked September 30, 2026; the page does not state a publication year.

The $0.00095 figure is an overage rate, not the effective cost of every URL on the plan. To estimate a workload, separate Embed requests, Extract requests, and Display image usage; apply each included allowance and overage rate to its own category. Also check whether you actually need all three capabilities: Embed creates responsive embeds, Extract retrieves article text, images, and structured metadata, and Display resizes, crops, or optimizes images. Cards is a limited browser-based publishing option.

Which alternatives have evidence of a lower cost?

The services below do not all meter the same thing or provide the same feature set. Their listed prices and quotas were checked September 30, 2026; where a provider does not state a monthly allowance or overage rate, a per-URL comparison cannot be calculated honestly.

Service Published plan and allowance What the unit means What can be concluded about per-URL cost
ScreenshotNeo Free: 1,000 shots/month, no card. Paid: $5 for 3,000; $15 for 15,000; $39 for 60,000; $99 for 250,000; $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. A website screenshot or PDF capture, not an Embedly-style rich embed or article extraction. Not a like-for-like Embedly replacement. Consider it when the needed output is a screenshot or PDF.
Iframely Starter: $0 for 2,000 hits/month; Business: $49 for 25,000; Editorial: $149 for 100,000; Enterprise: $399 for 500,000. One hour of activity for a specific URL. An actively displayed URL may count once per active hour, up to 24 hits in a day. Its hit allowances cannot be treated as the same number of individual URL requests as Embedly’s.
LinkPreview Free and $8 Basic plans are personal-use; $25 Pro is marked for commercial use and lists 1,000 requests/hour; $119 Enterprise lists 100 requests/minute. Request rate is published; no monthly included-request total or Pro overage rate is stated on the pricing page. Per-domain limits may apply, including a maximum of one request per second per unique domain. The $25 Pro entry price is lower than Embedly’s listed $119 API starting price, but there is not enough published usage data to establish a lower per-URL cost.
Microlink Official skill documentation describes a free endpoint with a soft limit of 25 requests and says Pro quota starts at 14,000 on a key’s plan. Current paid price is not established by the cited pages. metadata(url) is the documented link-preview/metadata operation. A high-volume use-case page describes configurable caching and says repeated cached requests do not count toward quota. No paid per-URL price ranking is supported without a current paid price and confirmation of plan and cache terms.

How the main alternatives compare

Iframely: rich embeds with activity-based billing

Iframely is relevant when the goal is rich-media embeds rather than only a basic title-and-description card. Its API provides rich embed HTML, URL metadata, available media variants, and can prepare a summary card when rich media is unavailable. Its pricing page lists the monthly tiers in the table, while billing help defines a hit as an hour of activity for a specific URL. A URL displayed continuously can therefore produce repeated hits; counting only distinct links submitted by your backend will understate usage.

Check domain licensing before choosing a tier. Iframely describes Starter as limited to one domain for commercial use, with multi-domain plans at higher tiers. Its provider documentation reports a QA database of over 1,900 domains; that is a vendor-reported figure, not a guarantee that every URL your users submit will produce a rich embed.

LinkPreview: lower commercial entry price, incomplete unit economics

LinkPreview’s $25/month Pro tier is explicitly marked for commercial use and lists a 1,000-requests-per-hour limit. That makes it a candidate to investigate for a modest commercial link-preview workload, but the published page does not state the monthly included volume or per-request overage price. Its request-rate ceiling is not a monthly quota: a service may accept requests at a given hourly rate without specifying how many are included in the subscription.

Before estimating savings, request the monthly allowance, overage schedule, supported coverage, and any applicable domain restrictions from the vendor. The pricing page also warns that per-domain limits can apply, including a maximum of one request per second per unique domain. A workload concentrated on a small number of domains may run into that limit even if its total hourly request volume appears modest.

Microlink: relevant metadata capability, price not established

Microlink’s documentation identifies metadata(url) as the link-preview and metadata operation. Its official skill documentation describes a free endpoint with a soft limit of 25 requests and says the Pro quota starts at 14,000 on a key’s plan, but the cited official pages do not establish the current paid plan price. A high-volume use-case page describes configurable caching and says repeated cached requests do not count toward quota; confirm the exact behavior and eligibility for the plan you would use before including cache savings in a cost model.

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative when you need a screenshot, not an embed

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a direct substitute for Embedly’s rich embed, article extraction, or image transformation features. If the product requirement is to capture a web page as a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, it is the screenshot option to try first: cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. It also offers MCP tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See ScreenshotNeo for the service and its documentation for API details.

Choose by workload, not by headline price

  1. Write down the output your application needs. Choose between responsive third-party embeds, metadata or article extraction, image processing, preview cards, or an actual screenshot/PDF. A cheaper product that omits a required feature is not a cost-saving replacement.
  2. Measure the same month of traffic for each candidate. Count Embed and Extract HTTP requests separately for Embedly. For Iframely, estimate active URL-hours, including repeated hours for pages that stay displayed. For LinkPreview, obtain the monthly allowance and overage terms; its requests-per-hour figure alone is insufficient.
  3. Apply plan limits and overages separately. For Embedly, use its distinct included Embed, Extract, and Display quantities and their respective overage rates. For other providers, use only published allowances and rates; mark unknown costs as unknown rather than dividing the subscription by an assumed request count.
  4. Check usage rights and operational limits. Confirm commercial-use permission, number of allowed domains, per-domain throttles, and any rate limits. For Iframely, account for its Starter domain restriction; for LinkPreview, account for the stated possibility of per-domain limits.
  5. Validate caching behavior with your actual plan. Determine whether cache hits count, how long results remain usable, and whether your intended settings are available at the selected tier. Microlink’s high-volume page describes cached repeated requests as not counting toward quota, but verify the precise plan terms before forecasting savings.
  6. Compare equivalent bundles. If you depend on Embedly’s Extract and Display alongside embeds, price an alternative that reproduces those jobs—or include the cost of separate services and integration work. A metadata-only plan price does not replace a bundle of embed, extraction, and image capabilities.

What can be said about lower per-URL pricing?

Embedly’s additional Embed or Extract URL rate is explicit: $0.00095 per URL after the corresponding included allowance. The available pricing evidence does not prove that Iframely, LinkPreview, or Microlink is cheaper per URL on an equivalent workload. Iframely counts activity hours; LinkPreview omits the monthly allowance and overage rate needed for a unit-cost calculation; Microlink’s current paid price is not established in the cited official pages.

That does not make those services poor alternatives. It means the decision should be framed as a request for comparable terms, not as a ranking based on sticker price. Ask vendors for the metering definition, included monthly units, overage, commercial-use conditions, and cache treatment, then test those terms against a representative month of your own URL activity.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you need is a clean website capture rather than a rich embed or extracted article, ScreenshotNeo can return one with a GET request. Its cookie-banner and consent handling, popup and chat-widget removal can each be turned off; it supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output. Only clean shots are billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server so AI agents can take screenshots.
