The quickest method: pause the YouTube video on the frame you want, then use your device’s screenshot shortcut. On Windows press Windows + Shift + S, on a Mac press Shift + Command + 4, on a Chromebook press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, on an iPhone press Side + Volume Up (or Side + Home on Home-button models), and on Android press Power + Volume Down. Choose a region or window capture when you want to exclude browser tabs, notifications, and other desktop content.
Prepare the YouTube page before capturing
- Open the video or channel page and wait for the part you need to load.
- Pause the video on the exact frame. Use the timeline to move one moment at a time if necessary.
- Move the pointer away from the player. YouTube controls normally fade after a short pause; moving the pointer off the video helps keep them out of the image.
- Dismiss overlays, cookie notices, chat panels, and notification banners that cover the content. If you need the title or channel name, scroll until those details are visible.
- Decide whether you need the visible viewport, a browser window, a selected rectangle, or the entire long page. A normal screenshot captures only what is currently visible; a full-page capture is a separate scrolling feature and is not available in every app.
Windows 10 and 11
Capture a selected YouTube area
- Press Windows + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool’s overlay.
- Select Rectangle, then drag around the player, title, comments, or any other area you want.
- Release the mouse. The capture is copied and opens in Snipping Tool for cropping, markup, saving, and sharing.
Rectangle capture is usually the cleanest way to save a video frame because it excludes browser tabs and the taskbar. You can also press Print Screen to copy the entire display, but that includes everything on the monitor.
Capture the browser window or whole screen
After pressing Windows + Shift + S, choose Window and click the browser to capture its complete window, including the YouTube page and browser chrome. Choose Full screen for every monitor pixel. Snipping Tool also offers freeform and video snips when a rectangular still is not suitable.
Current Windows documentation says captures are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder. Confirm the destination in Snipping Tool before closing the editor, especially on managed work PCs where folder policies can differ.

macOS
Region, window, or full screen
- Press Shift + Command + 4, then drag around the YouTube player or page section.
- For a browser-window shot, press Shift + Command + 4, press Space, and click the browser window.
- Press Shift + Command + 3 to capture the entire screen.
Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot app. It provides region, window, and screen controls plus a timer, pointer visibility, thumbnail behavior, and save-location settings. macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default unless you select another location.
Get a control-free frame
Pause the video, wait for the YouTube controls to disappear, then use the region shortcut. A window capture includes the address bar and tabs, so use it only when that context is useful.
Chromebook
- Open Screen Capture from the shelf menu, or press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
- Choose Full screen, Partial, or Window.
- For Partial, drag over the player or page content; for Window, select the browser.
If an external keyboard has no Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative. Chromebook screenshots are copied to the clipboard and saved in Downloads unless you choose another folder.
iPhone and iPad-style full-page captures
Take a standard screenshot
- Face ID iPhone: quickly press and release Side + Volume Up.
- Home-button iPhone: quickly press and release Side + Home.
Tap the thumbnail preview to crop, draw, add text, or share. The image is saved in Photos. A standard capture contains only the visible screen, so first scroll the YouTube page to put the player, title, or comments you need in view.
Capture a long page
When viewing the page in a browser and the option is offered, tap the screenshot preview and select Full Page. This creates a scrolling document of content below the viewport. The option is not offered for every app or screen, and it is generally more useful for a YouTube page in a browser than for a frame inside the YouTube app.
Android phones and tablets
Standard screenshot
- Press Power + Volume Down together and release.
- If that shortcut does not work, hold the Power button and choose Screenshot.
- Open the preview to crop, annotate, or share.
Images normally appear in Google Photos under the Screenshots location, or in the device Gallery on older setups.
Scrolling YouTube pages
On Android 12 and newer, many scrollable screens show Capture more after the initial screenshot. Drag the crop guides through the page and save. Availability depends on the app and screen; a video frame itself is not made longer by this option.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot includes controls or a cursor
Pause, move the pointer outside the player, wait for controls to fade, and capture a smaller region. On macOS, use the Screenshot app’s pointer setting when you need to exclude it consistently.

The image is black or shows a loading spinner
Wait for the video frame to render, verify that playback is not blocked, and capture the page rather than an overlaid player control. A protected or failed load may require permission from the page owner; do not attempt to bypass access controls.
Scrolling capture is missing
Use the visible-viewport method, then take several overlapping screenshots and combine them manually. Full-page, Full Page, and Capture more are platform- and app-dependent rather than universal screenshot modes.
You cannot find the saved file
Check Snipping Tool’s configured folder or Windows’ Screenshots folder, the macOS desktop or selected Screenshot app location, Chromebook Downloads, iPhone Photos, or Android Photos/Gallery. Clipboard-only captures may require pasting into an image editor before saving.
The API response is not an image
Check the HTTP status and response headers, confirm the access key and URL are URL-encoded, and inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed. A timeout, bot check, blank page, failed load, or cache hit can produce a non-billed result rather than a clean image.
