A YouTube thumbnail is the preview image attached to a video. It gives viewers a quick visual snapshot while they browse, helping them recognize the subject and decide whether to open the video. YouTube can select a frame automatically, or an eligible, verified creator can upload a custom image in YouTube Studio.
The practical rules are straightforward: use a 16:9 image for standard videos (YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels) and a 9:16 image for Shorts (recommended 2160 × 3840 pixels). Design for small screens, represent the video accurately, and check how the image appears on the discovery surfaces that matter to your audience.
What a YouTube thumbnail does
A thumbnail is the image viewers see before they play a video. It appears in browsing and recommendation contexts such as search and other video-discovery surfaces, as well as in player-related locations. YouTube describes custom video and Shorts thumbnails as a way for an audience to view “a quick snapshot of your content.”
That makes the thumbnail an identification and expectation-setting asset, not a replacement for the video itself. A useful image should communicate the subject at a glance, remain readable when reduced, and accurately reflect what viewers will find after clicking. YouTube does not publish a universal click-through-rate improvement figure for custom thumbnails, so treat design advice as practical guidance rather than a guaranteed performance result.
#1 Best Overall
Automatic frame or custom image?
| Approach | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Automatically suggested frame | Fast; no separate image-editing step; available during upload or editing | Less control over composition, branding, text readability and the moment selected |
| Custom thumbnail | Control over layout, colors, subject, text and consistent channel branding | Requires an image file, compliance review and an eligible, verified account for the documented upload workflow |
YouTube may offer suggested frames, while a creator who meets the account requirements can upload a custom file. Choose the automatic option when speed is more important than presentation; choose a custom image when the video needs a specific promise, series identity or visual explanation.
Recommended YouTube thumbnail size and format
YouTube’s current guidance distinguishes standard videos from Shorts. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every surface will display the file at its full resolution.
| Video type | Recommended canvas | Aspect ratio | Published minimum | Examples of supported formats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 | Minimum width 640 pixels | JPG, PNG |
| Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 | Minimum height 640 pixels | JPG, PNG |
File-size limits vary by upload device and can change as YouTube updates its rules. The documented limits are up to 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails uploaded on desktop; mobile uploads are limited to 2 MB for video thumbnails and 10 MB for podcast thumbnails. Check the current limit in YouTube Help if an upload is rejected.
What happens when dimensions do not match?
If an uploaded image does not meet the required dimensions, YouTube resizes it without changing its aspect ratio. Black bars can be added. To avoid unexpected padding, create the image at the intended ratio before uploading rather than relying on automatic correction.

How to add a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Verify eligibility. The documented custom-thumbnail workflow requires account verification. Complete verification before troubleshooting the image file.
- Open YouTube Studio. On a computer, select Content in the left navigation.
- Select the video. Open the video whose thumbnail you want to change.
- Choose the thumbnail control. In the video details area, use Upload file for your own image or Get suggestions to choose a YouTube-generated frame.
- Review the preview. Check the image at the small sizes used in feeds and on the watch page. Confirm that important text and faces are not near an edge.
- Save. Apply the change and allow time for the new preview to propagate across YouTube surfaces.
The exact labels can vary as Studio is redesigned, but the documented path is Content, select a video, Thumbnail, then Upload file or Get suggestions, followed by Save.
Adding a custom thumbnail to a Short
YouTube Help says custom thumbnails can be added to Shorts in YouTube Studio on a computer and recommends a 9:16 image. YouTube has also reported a rollout in which YouTube Partner Program creators can upload fully custom Shorts thumbnails and use Ask Studio suggestions. Availability can depend on rollout status and account eligibility, so an option missing from your account is not necessarily an image-format error.
Why a vertical video may show a different image
YouTube states that a vertical video using a 16:9 custom thumbnail may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. For a Short, design a 9:16 master and inspect the places where viewers discover it instead of judging only the upload preview.
Designing a thumbnail that remains useful at small size
- Show one clear subject. A face, object or before-and-after state should be understandable without zooming.
- Use short, high-contrast text. Keep words large enough for a phone feed and avoid putting critical text against a busy background.
- Match the promise. The image should accurately represent the video’s topic, result or question. A misleading image can create the wrong expectation and may violate platform rules.
- Leave safe space. Keep key details away from corners and edges where interface elements or cropping can obscure them.
- Preview multiple surfaces. Check Home, Explore, Subscriptions, search, the watch page and a non-mobile layout when those surfaces are important to your channel.
- Keep a repeatable system. Consistent type, color and placement can help viewers identify a series, but vary the central subject so individual videos are distinguishable.
Community Guidelines and rejection risks
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can trigger rejection or strikes. Review the image independently from the video: a compliant video can still have a non-compliant thumbnail.

If YouTube rejects an image, remove the prohibited element and upload a truthful alternative. Do not evade a restriction by making a barely changed version of the same prohibited image. Keep an original, editable design file so you can make a clean revision quickly.
How YouTube handles thumbnail variants
The YouTube Data API exposes thumbnail objects with named size variants, including default, medium, high, standard and maxres. Each variant includes URL metadata. An application consuming the API should select the size appropriate for its layout rather than assuming that every video has a maximum-resolution image.
For an embedded card, request a variant that is large enough for the rendered slot, then preserve its aspect ratio in your interface. Do not stretch a 16:9 image into a vertical card; use a suitable crop or a separate Short-oriented asset.
Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
There is no Upload file option
Confirm that the account is verified and that the selected account has permission to edit the video. For Shorts, availability can also depend on YouTube’s rollout and account eligibility. Try YouTube Studio on a computer for the documented Shorts workflow.

Compare the file with the device-specific limit: desktop uploads allow up to 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails; mobile video uploads allow up to 2 MB. Export a JPG at a sensible quality level or reduce unnecessary metadata, then retry.
The image has bars or looks soft
Check the canvas ratio and dimensions before uploading. YouTube preserves the image’s aspect ratio when resizing and can add black bars. Re-export at 3840 × 2160 for a standard video or 2160 × 3840 for a Short, then inspect the result at feed size.
The Short shows a different thumbnail on Home
This can be expected for vertical videos. YouTube may substitute an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and Subscriptions while retaining the custom image in the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile contexts. Evaluate the surfaces separately.
Text is unreadable on phones
Reduce the number of words, enlarge the type and increase contrast. Export a copy at the final ratio and view it at a small on-screen size before uploading. If the message requires a paragraph, move that explanation into the title or description.

If you need a clean image of a YouTube page for documentation, QA or an internal preview, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one request. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same thumbnail for every video?
You can, but a video-specific image usually communicates the subject more accurately. If you use a series template, change the main subject or wording so each upload remains identifiable.
Does a custom thumbnail guarantee more views?
No. YouTube does not publish a universal click-through-rate improvement statistic for custom thumbnails. Treat design as an expectation-setting and recognition task, then evaluate your own channel data.
Why does YouTube offer several thumbnail sizes in its API?
Different surfaces and layouts need different resolutions. The Data API names default, medium, high, standard and maxres variants and provides URL metadata for the available images.
Should a Short thumbnail always be vertical?
For Shorts, YouTube recommends a 9:16 image. A 16:9 image on a vertical video can be replaced by a 4:5 auto-generated image on Home, Explore and Subscriptions.
