Best WordPress Themes for Travel Blogs in 2026: What to Compare

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Astra and Kadence are the strongest starting points to preview for a travel blog in 2026. Both offer general-purpose blog and layout features, but neither directory listing proves that a theme will make your photography, long destination guides, or archives look right. Compare them with your own content; consider Blocksy and GeneratePress as additional candidates, not as ranked travel-blog winners.

What matters in a travel-blog theme

A travel blog needs more than an attractive homepage. The theme should make destination photography work in post headers and archive cards, keep long guides readable, and make it easy to browse categories and navigate on a phone. Preview the theme with your own images and writing rather than relying on a demo or a feature checklist.

  • Photography: Check featured images in a post, on category pages, and in archive cards. Inspect the crop and image size on a narrow screen.
  • Reading and archives: Compare typography, column choices, full-width layouts, sidebars, and navigation using both a long post and a destination archive.
  • Editing workflow: Consider whether you prefer theme settings and starter layouts, a block-first workflow, or a page builder. Vendor compatibility claims do not establish which workflow will feel easiest for you.
  • Accessibility and customization: Test keyboard navigation, contrast, and readability in the actual preview. A directory label or feature description is not a substitute for checking your implementation.
  • Travel-specific functions: Do not assume a general-purpose theme includes maps, itineraries, booking tools, or affiliate management. Verify each requirement against the theme and any plugin you plan to use.
  • Cost: Astra and Kadence are commercial themes with free versions and optional paid upgrades or support. Confirm current pricing, renewals, and which features require payment with the vendor.

Astra: flexible layouts and builder options

Astra’s WordPress.org listing describes blog and featured-image support, full-width templates, one- and two-column layouts, left and right sidebars, customization options, and ecommerce. It also lists compatibility with Spectra, Elementor, Beaver Builder, and other page builders. That makes Astra worth exploring if you want a flexible general-purpose foundation with several layout and editing paths.

The listing checked on September 30, 2026, showed version 4.14.0, a September 24, 2026 update date, and more than one million active installations. Those are directory-reported figures, not evidence of travel-blog-specific use or quality. Astra’s listing describes the theme as mobile-first and cites schema markup and fast performance; those are vendor claims, not independent test results.

In a preview, check whether you can create the travel-blog design you want without accumulating page-builder complexity. Also verify which of your desired controls require a paid upgrade.

Kadence: visual setup controls and starter templates

Kadence’s WordPress.org listing describes a drag-and-drop header and footer builder, starter templates, and global font and color controls. Its listed features include blog and featured-image support, full-width templates, sidebars, two columns, and wide blocks. It is a candidate to explore if you value visual setup controls and a starter-template route.

The directory listing labels Kadence accessibility-ready. Treat that as a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every site built with the theme will be accessible. Check contrast, keyboard use, and content readability in your own preview, then see how the selected starter layout handles a long guide, featured photos, mobile navigation, and destination archives.

The listing checked on September 30, 2026, showed version 1.5.2, a July 24, 2026 update date, and more than 500,000 active installations. The listing also describes Kadence as lightweight and fast-loading; no comparative benchmark or independent speed measurement is established by those descriptions.

Blocksy and GeneratePress: candidates to preview

WordPress.org’s popular-themes browse page includes Blocksy and GeneratePress alongside Astra and Kadence. That makes them reasonable options to add to a shortlist, but the browse-page information does not provide enough candidate-specific detail to rank either for travel blogging. Review their current information pages and previews before deciding.

How to preview a theme before activating it

WordPress.org describes its Theme Directory as the official directory for WordPress themes and says listed themes are reviewed and tested against a range of rules. Its documentation recommends using Preview when screenshots and feature lists are not enough to judge a theme’s fit. A preview is especially useful here because the right result depends on how your own content fits the design.

  1. In the WordPress Theme Directory, open the candidate theme and use its Preview feature rather than deciding from screenshots alone.
  2. Inspect a long destination guide and a photo-rich post. Check the post header, text width, featured-image treatment, and reading flow.
  3. Open a category or destination archive. Compare how posts and their images appear, and whether the available columns and sidebar suit your browsing structure.
  4. Check the header and menu at a narrow mobile width. Test any planned sidebar or footer modules as well as keyboard navigation and contrast.
  5. Compare the same content in each candidate before choosing. WordPress.org’s documentation notes that activating a theme applies its style and functionality to the site, so preview before activation.

See WordPress.org’s “Work with themes” documentation for its guidance on browsing, previewing, and activating themes.

How to make the final choice

Start with Astra and Kadence if you want the best-supported comparison from the directory details described here. Choose between them based on the preview: the stronger fit is the one that handles your photographs, long posts, archive browsing, and navigation well without making your editing workflow harder than it needs to be. Add Blocksy or GeneratePress if you want more options, but compare their current details and live previews rather than assuming they are travel-specific alternatives.

Directory installation counts are adoption signals only; they do not measure travel-blog usage, conversion, speed, or quality. The directory listings also do not independently establish real-world performance, accessibility of a particular site, or commercial value. Treat current versions, update dates, install counts, paid-feature boundaries, and vendor terms as changeable details.
