For a WooCommerce store, the documented route is to connect the official WooCommerce Stripe extension, then enable SEPA Direct Debit under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Payment Methods. Availability depends on the connected Stripe account and the shopper’s checkout country and currency. WooPayments also lists SEPA Direct Debit, but its documentation describes the method as a closed beta that is not accepting additional accounts at the reviewed time.
What you need before enabling SEPA Direct Debit
- A WordPress site running WooCommerce.
- A Stripe account that can be connected to the official WooCommerce Stripe extension.
- A checkout context in which SEPA Direct Debit is available for the merchant account, the customer’s billing country and the checkout currency.
- A test environment or test mode in which you can run a processor-supported checkout before accepting live payments.
SEPA Direct Debit is a bank-account payment method, not a card wallet. The shopper supplies bank details during the processor’s checkout and authorizes a mandate allowing the debit. Exact fields and mandate wording come from the live Stripe checkout and can change, so do not copy them into a separate WordPress form.
Recommended setup: the WooCommerce Stripe extension
1. Install and connect the official extension
Install the official WooCommerce Stripe extension and complete its current connection and onboarding flow for your Stripe account. The extension, rather than a custom payment form, should handle the payment-method presentation and processor communication.
2. Open the payment-method settings
- In WordPress, open WooCommerce.
- Select Settings.
- Open Payments.
- Choose Stripe.
- Open Payment Methods.
3. Turn on SEPA Direct Debit
Find SEPA Direct Debit in the supported additional payment methods, enable it and save the settings. If it is not listed or cannot be enabled, treat that as an account or checkout-eligibility issue rather than trying to recreate SEPA collection yourself. Check the connected Stripe account and the customer’s country and currency conditions.

4. Test before switching to live payments
Run a processor-supported test checkout in your own test environment. Confirm that the method appears when the test shopper uses the intended billing country and currency, that the bank-detail fields and mandate text render correctly, and that the resulting order reaches the expected WooCommerce status. This is a prudent launch check, not a substitute for the processor’s current test instructions.
What the customer authorizes
In Stripe’s documented flow, the shopper selects SEPA Direct Debit, enters their full name and IBAN, and authorizes a mandate. The mandate is the customer’s permission for the debit; it is not simply a checkbox accepting your store’s terms.

Keep this interaction inside the processor checkout supplied by the extension. Do not collect IBANs through an unrelated contact, account or checkout form and then attempt to debit them manually. Use the exact mandate presentation provided by the connected processor, including any notices it requires.
Can WooCommerce use SEPA for subscriptions?
WooCommerce documents that its Stripe extension can make automatic subscription renewals with payment methods that use SEPA tokenization, including SEPA Direct Debit. Before launch, verify that your current WooCommerce Subscriptions configuration and the connected Stripe gateway expose that behavior for your account.

WooPayments is different: its documentation says automatic subscription renewals are not supported for its additional payment methods. Do not choose WooPayments for recurring SEPA billing on the assumption that a one-time SEPA checkout will renew automatically.

The available documentation does not establish a complete, region-specific fee comparison, so price is not a reliable basis for ranking these routes without checking the current processor terms for your country.

Common problems and what to check
SEPA Direct Debit is missing
- Confirm that the official Stripe extension is connected to the intended Stripe account.
- Reopen WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Payment Methods and check the additional-method list.
- Use a shopper billing country and checkout currency that the processor supports.
- Check the connected account’s current eligibility in Stripe rather than adding an unofficial gateway.
The method appears for one checkout but not another
Payment methods can be filtered by the shopper’s billing country and the checkout currency. Compare the two checkout contexts and confirm that the difference is not caused by a currency switcher, geolocation rule or another checkout customization.
A subscription does not renew automatically
Verify that the store uses WooCommerce Subscriptions, that the Stripe extension is the active gateway for the subscription, and that the payment method is being stored through the documented SEPA tokenization flow. WooPayments additional methods are not an automatic-renewal solution.

The mandate text or fields look wrong
Do not edit the processor’s bank-detail or mandate fields into a custom form. Test with the current extension and processor checkout, then review extension, Stripe and WooCommerce updates if the presentation is incomplete.
Security and compliance boundaries
WooCommerce’s developer guidance distinguishes form-based, iframe-based, direct and offline gateways. Direct gateways require server security such as SSL and may involve PCI obligations. A merchant using the official Stripe extension is not automatically building a direct gateway, but should still follow the extension’s current security instructions, keep WordPress and WooCommerce updated, restrict administrator access and avoid storing raw bank details in WordPress.
