How to Create Images for a Website Slider

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal image size for a website slider. Check the dimensions and crop behavior of the specific theme, CMS component, or slider you use, then preview the image in that component at desktop and mobile widths. Keep the focal subject visible after cropping, use live page text for headlines and buttons where possible, and make sure any moving carousel can be paused and operated with a keyboard.

Start with the slider’s actual image requirements

A slider’s layout determines how its images are displayed. Its aspect ratio, container size, and scaling or cropping behavior matter more than a general-purpose “slider size” found online. Before preparing files, look for image guidance in the theme, CMS, page builder, or slider editor. If the component offers a preview, use it to see the crop rather than relying on the source image’s dimensions alone.

Platform documentation illustrates why a single dimension cannot fit every slider. The U.S. National Science Foundation’s guidance for its own full-width hero component prefers an image of 1920 × 1080 pixels and describes 1.7:1 or wider as a suitable proportion. Microsoft’s SharePoint Hero web part uses different proportions for different layouts: Tiles has an 8:3 component ratio and scales images to 4:3, while Layers uses an 8:3 individual layer and images near 9:16. These are specifications for those components, not general web standards. See the NSF hero-image guidance and Microsoft’s SharePoint Hero documentation.

Find the crop, not just the nominal size

A file can have plenty of pixels and still look wrong if the slider fills a wide or tall container by cutting off its edges. Find out whether the component fits the whole image, crops it to fill, or uses different scaling by layout. Check whether it has a focal-point control, separate desktop and mobile images, or a setting that changes the image position. Use the component’s current documentation when the editor does not make these behaviors clear.

Choose one crop or prepare alternate crops

A single image can work across viewports when the subject remains in a safe central area and the slider’s crop is modest. If the mobile crop removes the subject, or the composition needs to change substantially between a wide desktop banner and a narrow phone screen, prepare an alternate crop if the component supports one. Do not assume it does: verify how the slider chooses between images at different widths.

Prepare and check the image in the real layout

  1. Confirm the component. Identify the exact slider, layout, and intended display width. Check its editor or platform documentation for image dimensions, aspect ratio, crop behavior, and support for alternate images.
  2. Select a suitable original. Start with an image large enough for the intended display, with the subject positioned so likely crops will not cut it off. Avoid baking a headline or button into the image when those can be added as page content.
  3. Make the crop. Crop to the component’s documented proportion, or keep an original suited to its automatic cropping behavior. If the editor provides focal-point positioning or separate mobile imagery, set or upload those options deliberately.
  4. Upload it to the actual slider. Use the component’s preview or a draft page. A generic image editor cannot show exactly how the website’s own container, overlays, and responsive rules will render the image.
  5. Inspect desktop and mobile widths. Check the whole visible area, not only the center. Confirm that the focal subject remains visible, text and controls have enough contrast, and the crop does not make the composition confusing.
  6. Revise and recheck. Adjust the crop, focal position, or mobile image, then preview again. Repeat for every slide, since one image’s crop and background may not work for another.

Keep the subject inside a flexible safe area

When a slider crops responsively, assume that the visible frame can change with its width. Leave breathing room around the subject and avoid placing important details tight against the edges. A centered subject is not a universal fix—some designs deliberately place a subject to one side so text can sit beside it—but make sure that composition survives both the desktop and mobile layouts you intend to support.

Use CSS that lets images reflow

For a responsive image that should retain its proportions, CSS such as max-width: 100%; height: auto; can make it fit its available space without stretching it. This is one implementation technique, not a complete slider solution: a full-bleed hero that must fill a fixed frame may need cropping instead. The W3C’s C37 technique describes using max-width and height to fit images; W3C identifies it as an advisory technique, not a required implementation or a guarantee of conformance by itself.

Keep text and controls accessible over images

Image choices affect more than appearance. A changing background can make overlaid copy hard to read, and movement can make a carousel difficult to use. Check contrast on every slide, including where the image is brightest or busiest behind the text. A semi-opaque background behind foreground text or controls can help keep contrast stable. Give controls clear labels and visible states, and test them with keyboard input. WAI’s carousel styling guidance also gives 44 × 44 CSS pixels as a target size for buttons and links that are not inline within a block of text.

Use real text for headlines and calls to action

Whenever the design allows, place headlines and button labels in the page rather than rendering them as pixels inside the image. Live text can adapt to the layout and remains text for assistive technologies. WCAG says to use text instead of images of text when the same presentation can be achieved with the technology; see WCAG 2.1.

Give informative images appropriate text alternatives based on their content and function in context. If an image is decorative and adds no information beyond the surrounding content, its treatment should reflect that. Do not use alt text as a substitute for a headline that has been embedded in the image.

Make automatic movement controllable

If slides advance automatically, provide a visible way to pause or stop the movement. Make carousel controls keyboard-operable, communicate slide changes to assistive technology, and keep focus behavior predictable. WAI explains that motion can be too fast or distracting and that changes must be communicated to all users, including screen-reader users, in its Carousels Tutorial. Its accessibility design tips also recommend visible controls to stop animations or auto-playing sound.

Use ScreenshotNeo to inspect the rendered slider

A screenshot of a draft page can help you inspect the slider as it actually renders, rather than judging only the uploaded file. It does not create or crop the slider image; use the preview to spot issues such as a missing focal subject, an unreadable overlay, or an unexpected mobile layout, then adjust the source image or page component.

For example, capture a page at its public or preview URL with a single GET request:

Choose a file format and size for your delivery setup

The available platform guidance here does not establish one universally correct file format, compression setting, or maximum byte size for slider images. Those choices depend on the CMS or theme, the image-delivery pipeline, and the site’s performance budget. Check what the publishing workflow accepts, then inspect the result on the page rather than assuming a particular export setting will work everywhere.

For clarity, the pixel dimensions in a file are not the same as the space the image occupies on the page. A component may scale a large source down, crop it to fill a frame, or use different scaling rules for different layouts. Start with the component’s requirements and test the resulting presentation at relevant widths before treating an export as finished.

Troubleshoot common slider-image problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The subject is cut off on mobile The narrow frame crops a different part of the image than the desktop frame. Preview the mobile layout; adjust the focal position or use a mobile crop if the slider supports one.
The image looks stretched The displayed frame and image proportions differ, and the image is being resized to fit both dimensions. Check the component’s fit or crop behavior and use proportional sizing where appropriate; avoid forcing width and height in a way that distorts the image.
Overlay text is hard to read on one slide Contrast changes with the image behind the text. Check the text against each slide and use a suitable semi-opaque backing or a different crop or image when needed.
A headline is illegible or missing on small screens The words may be embedded in the image or be positioned outside the useful crop. Use live page text where feasible and preview its placement at the narrow layout.
Users cannot stop the carousel The component may lack a visible pause or stop control, or its controls may not work with a keyboard. Check the carousel’s controls and keyboard behavior; provide a way to stop automatic movement.
The image does not match the editor preview The live page may use a different component setting, responsive rule, or crop position. Inspect the page at the relevant widths and compare its settings with the editor; update the image or component and preview again.

Final pre-publish checks

  • Confirm the dimensions and crop behavior for the specific component rather than relying on a universal size.
  • Preview each slide at desktop and mobile widths, checking the focal subject and important details.
  • Make headlines and calls to action live page text when feasible, and provide suitable text alternatives for informative images.
  • Check text and control contrast over every background; make interactive controls clear and keyboard-operable.
  • If the carousel moves automatically, give users a visible way to pause or stop it and ensure slide changes are communicated accessibly.
  • Recheck the published layout after any change to the image, crop, or slider settings.
