How to Record a Website Screen Video: Browser, Loom, Google Vids, or OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a quick website walkthrough, use a browser recorder such as the Loom Chrome extension: choose the tab, window, or screen to share, select a microphone if you want narration, and start recording. Choose a tab for a single website, a window if the demonstration crosses tabs or applications, and the entire screen only when the workflow requires it. For a configurable local production setup, use OBS Studio instead. Google Vids’ Chrome extension is another Chrome-first option and documents a recording limit of up to 30 minutes.

How do I record my browser screen?

The fastest route is generally a browser recorder. In Loom’s Chrome extension, open the recorder, choose Full Screen, Window, or Current Tab, decide whether to include the camera, choose a microphone source or turn the microphone off, and start recording. When you stop, Loom provides a video you can edit and share by link.

  1. Open the website and prepare the page you want to demonstrate.
  2. Open the Loom Chrome extension and pick the smallest capture area that contains the task: Current Tab for one site, Window for a broader browser or application workflow, or Full Screen when you need to show activity across applications.
  3. Turn the camera on or off. Select the microphone you intend to use, or disable it for a silent demonstration.
  4. Start recording and approve Chrome’s sharing prompt by selecting the tab, window, or screen you intend to share.
  5. Demonstrate the workflow at a steady pace, then stop the recording from the recorder controls. Review the result, make any available edits, and share the generated link if that suits your audience.

Loom’s instructions describe camera capture as optional: you can toggle the camera on or off. The browser’s permission step matters: Chrome asks you to select what is shared rather than silently recording an arbitrary screen.

Choose the right capture area

  • Current tab: usually best for a walkthrough of one website. It keeps unrelated applications outside the recording.
  • Window: useful when you need to show a browser window with multiple tabs or an application window.
  • Full screen: use this when the steps genuinely move between applications or parts of the desktop. It may also expose notifications or private information that a tab-only capture would avoid.

Before recording, rehearse the clicks and hide unrelated tabs, notifications, passwords, and private data. This is practical preparation, not a special feature of any one recorder.

How do I record a website walkthrough with audio?

For narration, choose the intended microphone in the recorder before starting and check that your voice is audible in a short test. If you want a silent demonstration, turn the microphone off. A camera is also optional; it is a presentation choice, not a requirement for showing a website.

There are two different kinds of audio to consider: your narration from a microphone and audio produced by the tab or desktop. A tool’s ability to capture one does not establish that it captures the other in every setup. Google Vids’ Chrome extension documents an option to include tab or desktop audio. Loom’s documented Chrome workflow covers microphone selection and camera toggling. For OBS, audio configuration is part of a broader configurable recording setup; consult its current settings and test the actual sources you need before relying on them.

  1. Decide whether the video needs narration, website or desktop audio, both, or neither.
  2. Select the microphone if narrating. If recording tab or desktop audio, enable the corresponding option in a recorder that documents it.
  3. Make a short test recording and play it back. Confirm that the cursor actions are visible and the intended sound is present at a usable level.
  4. Record the full walkthrough only after that check. If you change the capture source or audio options, test again.

A USB microphone is optional equipment for narration; the workflows described here require choosing an available microphone source, not buying a particular model.

Which should I use: a Chrome tab, browser window, or whole screen?

Capture choice Best fit Trade-off to consider
Chrome tab A walkthrough confined to one website It will not show actions outside the selected tab.
Browser or app window A workflow involving more than one tab or a particular application It can include more surrounding interface than a single-tab capture.
Entire screen A workflow that moves between applications or desktop areas It exposes the broadest area, so check for notifications and private information.

Chrome’s screen-capture APIs require the user to choose what to share through a permission picker. This is a deliberate selection step, not an instruction to record without the person using the browser knowing.

Which recorder fits the job?

The main differences are setup style, capture scope, audio choices, post-recording workflow, length limits, and where the resulting video goes. The documented facts below are specific to the named tools and workflows; they do not establish that every feature is available in every account, operating system, or browser configuration.

Option Setup and capture Audio and camera Editing, sharing, and length Choose it when
Loom Chrome extension Choose Full Screen, Window, or Current Tab in the extension. Camera is optional; choose a microphone source or turn the microphone off. Its workflow offers editing and a generated share link. No recording-length figure is established here. You want a quick browser-based capture and link-sharing workflow.
Google Vids Chrome extension Choose Screen, then Chrome Tab, Window, or Entire Screen, and click Share. Pause/resume when needed and click Finish to end. Tab or desktop audio can optionally be enabled. Google documents recordings of up to 30 minutes and link sharing. You prefer the Chrome-integrated workflow and your recording fits the documented limit.
OBS Studio Add a Display Capture or Window Capture source; macOS also has a macOS Screen Capture source. Its quick-start guide recommends the Auto-Configuration Wizard for recording settings. The setup is configurable; verify the specific microphone and system-audio sources you need. The cited quick-start guidance establishes configurable local capture, not a particular editing or hosted-link workflow. You want more control over a recording setup than a quick browser extension provides.

Google’s stated 30-minute limit applies to its Chrome-extension recording guidance; do not treat it as a general limit for all Google Vids workflows. The OBS quick-start guidance cited for capture sources is dated September 30, 2021, so check the current OBS interface and documentation for version-specific details.

What happens when Chrome asks what to share?

Chrome’s getDisplayMedia() API triggers a dialog where the user selects the screen, window, or tab to share, with optional audio depending on the request and browser support. Extensions can also use the tabCapture API for tab-based capture. These are browser-development interfaces rather than a substitute for choosing a recorder’s controls as an end user.

If you are building your own capture flow, expect a user permission picker. Do not assume a website can start recording a visitor’s display invisibly: the documented API flow includes a selection dialog. For a normal walkthrough, use the recorder’s UI and approve the requested source yourself.

How to get a clean, useful recording

  • Rehearse the task once and decide where the recording starts and ends.
  • Close or hide tabs that are not part of the walkthrough; silence notifications and remove private information from view.
  • Keep the capture area no broader than necessary.
  • Move the pointer deliberately and pause briefly after page transitions so viewers can follow.
  • Test the microphone and any tab or desktop audio before the full take.
  • Review the finished video from the viewer’s perspective: confirm that the important text is legible and no sensitive content slipped into frame.

These are production practices rather than guarantees about a particular recorder. Actual capture quality depends on the selected source, the page, the device, and the settings you use.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a screen-video recorder: one request captures a website as a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF rather than producing a narrated walkthrough. It can be useful when the deliverable is a clean still image or PDF instead of a video. Its capture flow can accept cookie or consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; those steps can each be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

For a single still-image request, adapt the target URL in this cURL example. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Use ScreenshotNeo when a screenshot—not a video—is what you need. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

The microphone is missing or narration is silent

Check that the recorder is set to the intended microphone rather than disabled, then make another short test and play it back. If your goal is to capture website or desktop sound rather than your voice, verify that the recorder offers and has enabled tab or desktop audio; microphone selection alone does not establish that system audio is included.

The recording includes the wrong audio

Separate the sources during setup: microphone for narration, tab or desktop audio for sound produced by the page or computer. Enable only what the walkthrough needs, then test. Google Vids documents optional tab or desktop audio; do not assume the same controls or behavior in another recorder.

The screen-share prompt was dismissed or the capture did not begin

Start the recorder again and complete the browser’s source-selection prompt. The permission picker is part of Chrome’s capture flow. If the prompt does not appear as expected, check the recorder’s current instructions and browser permissions rather than assuming capture has started.

The recording exceeds Google Vids’ documented limit

Google documents up to 30 minutes per Chrome-extension recording. Shorten the walkthrough or use a different workflow if the complete session cannot fit within that limit; the cited limit should not be generalized to other products.

The video contains notifications or private details

Stop and review the capture. For another take, close unrelated tabs, silence notifications, and select a narrower source such as the current tab. If the sensitive information is already visible in the recorded video, do not share that copy; make a clean recording.

Cost, sharing, and reliability considerations

The available official details establish workflow differences, Google Vids’ stated extension limit, and OBS capture-source options; they do not establish current subscription prices for Loom or Google Vids, a universal recording duration for Loom or OBS, or a guarantee that any recorder uploads, retains, or stores every file in the same way. Check the product and account terms that apply to your use before recording sensitive or long-running material.

For a video that must be easy to hand off, Loom and Google Vids document link-sharing workflows. If you need more configurable capture, OBS is the option described here for display or window sources and recording settings. For reliability, make a short test, confirm audio and capture scope, and review the resulting file before sending it. Network conditions, page behavior, and local device settings can affect an individual recording; no fixed completion time or failure rate is established here.
