For a standard YouTube video, make your thumbnail 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio. YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends that canvas, while 1280 × 720 remains the older size repeated by many creator guides. For Shorts, use a vertical 2160 × 3840 canvas at 9:16. Export as JPG or PNG and stay within the upload limit for the device and content type you use.
The current YouTube thumbnail sizes at a glance
| Content or surface | Recommended canvas | Aspect ratio | Minimum requirement stated by YouTube |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 | Minimum width 640 pixels |
| YouTube Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 | Minimum height 640 pixels |
| Podcast playlist | Square artwork | 1:1 | Not stated |
The 3840 × 2160 and 2160 × 3840 figures are recommendations, not a requirement that every thumbnail be created at those exact pixel counts. The important rules are the correct orientation, aspect ratio, readable composition and an upload file that fits the applicable limit.
Is YouTube thumbnail size 1280 × 720 or 3840 × 2160?
Both dimensions describe a 16:9 image, so they have the same shape. The difference is resolution: 3840 × 2160 contains nine times as many pixels as 1280 × 720. YouTube’s current Help page recommends 3840 × 2160 for videos, whereas 1280 × 720 is the legacy working size found in older and third-party instructions.
Use 3840 × 2160 when your design workflow can export it without making the file too large. It gives you more detail for text, product edges and faces before YouTube creates smaller previews. Use 1280 × 720 only when your editor, source artwork or upload process is limited; it still matches the required 16:9 shape, but it is not the current official recommendation.

Why the aspect ratio matters more than the number alone
A 16:9 image is 1.777 times as wide as it is high. Both 3840 ÷ 2160 and 1280 ÷ 720 produce that ratio. If you upload a square or vertical design as a standard-video thumbnail, YouTube must crop or letterbox it, which can remove text and important subjects. Set the canvas to 16:9 before you place any design elements.
Standard video thumbnails: a reliable design specification
- Canvas: 3840 × 2160 pixels.
- Shape: 16:9 landscape.
- Minimum width: 640 pixels.
- Formats: JPG and PNG are listed as suitable upload formats.
- Use case: the custom thumbnail attached to a regular YouTube video.
Keep critical words, faces and logos away from the extreme edges. YouTube displays the same image at several sizes, and a composition that looks spacious on a large monitor can become difficult to read in a compact recommendation card. A short headline, one clear subject and strong contrast generally survive reduction better than a paragraph of small type.
Shorts need a vertical thumbnail
For a Short, YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels in a 9:16 portrait ratio. That is the vertical counterpart to the standard-video specification. Do not simply rotate a 16:9 thumbnail and assume every element will remain visible: rebuild the layout for the tall canvas, with the subject and text centered in the portion most likely to remain visible across Shorts interfaces.
Rank #2
YouTube also documents a surface-specific exception for vertical video. A 16:9 custom thumbnail can be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom image may still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. This means a correctly uploaded custom image is not a guarantee that every YouTube surface will show the same crop.
File formats and upload-size limits
JPG and PNG are the formats YouTube lists for thumbnails. Choose the format that preserves your artwork while keeping the file below the limit for the upload interface and content type.
| Upload context | Maximum file size |
|---|---|
| Video thumbnail uploaded on mobile | 2 MB |
| Podcast thumbnail uploaded on mobile | 10 MB |
| Video, Shorts or podcast thumbnail uploaded on desktop | 50 MB |
The mobile and desktop ceilings are different, so a file accepted in YouTube Studio on a computer can still be rejected when you attempt the same upload from a phone. Check the exported file size before transferring it to another device. If a PNG is unnecessarily large, exporting a high-quality JPG is often the simplest way to reduce it; inspect the result at full size to ensure that text edges and fine details remain clean.

Podcast playlist artwork is square
A podcast playlist uses a 1:1 thumbnail rather than the 16:9 video canvas. Create a separate square master instead of cropping your video thumbnail after the fact. A square composition should be legible without relying on wide horizontal space, and the title should remain readable when the artwork is shown as a small tile.
How to create and upload the right thumbnail
- Choose the correct preset. Select 3840 × 2160 for a standard video, 2160 × 3840 for a Short, or a square canvas for podcast playlist artwork.
- Build the composition at that size. Place the main subject and the few words that communicate the video’s promise well inside the edges. Avoid thin text and low-contrast color combinations.
- Export as JPG or PNG. Retain the original high-resolution project file so you can revise the design without repeatedly scaling a compressed image.
- Check the file ceiling. For a desktop upload, keep video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails under 50 MB. For a mobile video upload, keep the file under 2 MB; mobile podcast artwork has a 10 MB ceiling.
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to Content, select the video, open its details and use the thumbnail controls to upload the custom image. For a Short, confirm that the file is the vertical version rather than your 16:9 video preset.
- Review more than one preview. Check the image at a small display size and on both light and dark surroundings. For vertical videos, also inspect the automatically generated 4:5 presentation that can appear on Home, Explore and Subscriptions.
Custom-thumbnail eligibility
Uploading a custom thumbnail requires the channel to meet YouTube’s verification and eligibility requirements. If the custom-thumbnail control is missing, verify the channel rather than changing pixel dimensions repeatedly. A technically valid image cannot bypass an account-level eligibility restriction.
Common problems and fixes
“The image is the wrong size”
Check the pixel dimensions, not only the file extension. A standard video should be 16:9; a Short should be 9:16. Recreate the canvas at 3840 × 2160 or 2160 × 3840 instead of stretching a smaller image, then export again.

The upload works on desktop but fails on a phone
Compare the file with the mobile limit. A video thumbnail over 2 MB can be accepted on desktop yet rejected by the mobile uploader. Compress the image, switch from an oversized PNG to a quality JPG, or upload it through the desktop interface.
The thumbnail looks blurry
A 1280 × 720 source has the correct shape but fewer pixels than YouTube’s current recommendation. Export from a larger original at 3840 × 2160 where practical, and avoid enlarging a small, already-compressed image.
Important content disappears on a Short
You are probably using a landscape design or placing text too close to an edge. Start with the 2160 × 3840 portrait preset and redesign the hierarchy for a tall screen. Remember that YouTube can also generate a 4:5 version for selected mobile surfaces.

For vertical video, YouTube may substitute an auto-generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom thumbnail can still be used in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms.
The custom-thumbnail option is unavailable
Check channel verification and eligibility first. Dimensions, format and compression matter only after the account is allowed to upload custom thumbnails.

If you build a page that displays a thumbnail, test the rendered page at the same landscape and portrait viewports your users will see. A screenshot captures the page around the image; it does not replace the thumbnail file or change YouTube’s upload rules. Test the 16:9 video card, the 9:16 Shorts card and any square podcast tile as separate layouts so a CSS crop in your own interface does not hide the focal point.
Or skip the browser setup
For developers who need a rendered screenshot of a thumbnail preview page, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-request screenshot API. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options.

The Bottom Line
Use 3840 × 2160 at 16:9 for a standard YouTube video, 2160 × 3840 at 9:16 for a Short, and square artwork for a podcast playlist. Treat 1280 × 720 as the older 16:9 convention, check the device-specific file limit, and design separately for vertical-video crops.
