You may not need an accordion plugin at all: WordPress’s built-in Details block can handle basic expandable FAQs and documentation. Install an add-on when you need a specific behavior or workflow—such as classic-editor shortcodes, nested panels, responsive styling, or documented FAQ tools—that the built-in block does not provide. The options below are compared by published features, not hands-on testing; treat performance and accessibility claims as claims from their publishers.

Do you need an accordion plugin in WordPress?

For simple collapsible content, start with the built-in Details block. SmartWP describes it as using native HTML <details> and <summary> elements and recommends it when basic behavior is enough. Its comparison says the block lacks features such as auto-closing, animation, icons, and built-in FAQ schema; those are the publisher’s characterizations, not independent test findings. SmartWP’s comparison was updated August 1, 2026.

A plugin adds another dependency to maintain, so choose one for a requirement rather than for the word “accordion” alone. Decide first whether you need a Gutenberg block or classic-editor shortcode, whether several panels may stay open at once, and whether you need nested content, custom layouts, or features such as search or schema.

WordPress accordion options compared

Option Editor and behavior Documented extras and limits Good fit when
WordPress Details block Built into WordPress; based on native HTML details/summary, according to SmartWP. SmartWP says advanced features such as auto-close, animation, icons, and built-in FAQ schema are absent. You need straightforward expandable text and want to avoid an additional plugin.
Lightweight Accordion WordPress.org describes a Gutenberg block and a shortcode for the classic editor. The listing reported 10,000+ active installations and tested up to WordPress 7.1 when accessed; both figures can change. You want an option spanning block-editor and shortcode workflows.
Easy Accordion Block Native Gutenberg block; the listing describes nested accordions and responsive styling controls. The listing documents keyboard operation, ARIA attributes, reduced-motion support, and panels readable without JavaScript. FAQ schema and instant search are listed as Pro features. These are developer statements, not an independent accessibility audit. You need nested panels or presentation controls and want to investigate documented accessibility features and Pro boundaries.
Advanced Accordion Gutenberg Block Gutenberg block. Its WordPress.org changelog records block conversion involving WordPress Accordion, Details, and Rank Math FAQ blocks, as well as keyboard-navigation changes. A changelog is a maintenance signal, not a quality comparison. You need to assess block-conversion workflow or want to review its update history.
B Accordion The listing describes vertical and horizontal layouts with responsive behavior and animation. The developer documents themes, styling, and schema markup, and identifies additional premium blocks. Treat these as listed features, not independently verified results. You specifically need layout choices such as horizontal accordions or want to evaluate its styling and premium features.

WordPress.org’s accordion tag also includes Ultimate FAQ Accordion Plugin, Accordions by PickPlugins, Accordion Blocks, Helpie FAQ, Gutena Accordion, and other listings. In the directory snapshots reviewed in 2026, Ultimate FAQ Accordion Plugin showed 30,000+ active installations, Accordions showed 20,000+, and Lightweight Accordion showed 10,000+. These publisher-maintained counts can change and indicate adoption, not endorsement or quality. Browse the WordPress.org accordion directory for current listings.

How to choose for your site

Match the plugin to your editor

If you build pages in the block editor, confirm that the plugin provides a block and that it works in your editing workflow. Lightweight Accordion is described as offering both a block and a classic-editor shortcode; Easy Accordion Block and Advanced Accordion Gutenberg Block are presented as Gutenberg options. If you rely on a page builder or a different editing setup, check its current listing and test insertion and editing before committing.

Specify the interaction you want

Write down whether multiple panels should remain open, whether opening one should close another, and whether you need nested sections, horizontal panels, animation, or all panels initially closed. The listings do not establish a consistent behavior comparison across every product, so verify the exact interaction in the plugin’s current documentation or a test page rather than assuming that “accordion” means the same thing in each tool.

Rank #2

Check content and styling needs

Consider whether panels need only text or also inner blocks and media, and whether their icons, spacing, colors, and responsive appearance can follow your theme. Easy Accordion Block documents desktop, tablet, and mobile styling controls; B Accordion lists vertical and horizontal layouts, themes, and styling. Confirm that the controls you need are available in the edition you plan to use.

Evaluate accessibility on the actual page

A feature listing is not proof that an implementation works for every keyboard or assistive-technology user. Easy Accordion Block’s listing claims keyboard operation, ARIA attributes, reduced-motion support, and readable panels without JavaScript, but the listing is not an independent audit. Test the published page with a keyboard, check focus visibility and opening and closing behavior, and use your own accessibility review process if this is a requirement.

Separate free features from Pro features

Check the plugin’s current listing for which features are free and which require a paid edition. For example, Easy Accordion Block lists FAQ schema and instant search as Pro features. B Accordion’s listing identifies premium blocks. Do not choose based on a feature named on a product page until you have confirmed its tier and whether that feature covers your use case.

Schema, SEO, and performance: keep claims in perspective

Some plugins advertise FAQ schema, but that does not establish that search engines will show a rich result or that adding schema will improve rankings. The product listing documents what its developer says the feature implements; it cannot guarantee a search outcome. Likewise, this comparison contains no independent performance benchmark for the listed plugins, so claims about speed should not be treated as comparative results.

The available sources also do not establish a general rule about how accordion-hidden content affects search visibility. If search performance matters, consult current search-engine guidance and assess the rendered page rather than inferring a result from a plugin’s SEO language.

Check compatibility and maintenance before installing

Plugin names, features, and compatibility information can change. On each WordPress.org listing, check the tested WordPress version, recent update history, support activity, and current free-versus-Pro description. The directory’s tested-version information is a live publisher-maintained listing, not a promise that a plugin will work with every theme, plugin combination, or site configuration.

Install only after confirming that the feature solves a real need. Test the accordion in your theme at desktop and mobile widths, try the keyboard interaction, and verify that the content remains usable in the conditions that matter to your audience. If the Details block already does the job, keeping the page simpler may be the more maintainable choice.
