Start with themes whose right-to-left support is documented, then test the complete site in its intended language and configuration. Kadence is listed by WordPress.org as supporting RTL languages; Astra says its theme and Starter Templates support RTL natively. These are documented product claims, not independent tests of layout quality or performance.
What RTL support means in WordPress
WordPress determines text direction from the website’s locale: its is_rtl() reference describes the function as checking whether the current locale is right-to-left. The Theme Developer Handbook says, “The right-to-left stylesheet is included automatically if the website language’s text direction is right-to-left.” That explanation appears in its discussion of classic theme template files and should not be read as a guarantee that every theme, custom block pattern, or component will display correctly.
The result depends on more than the theme label. The configured locale, theme and starter design, translation plugin, page builder, and custom CSS can all affect the public pages and editing experience. A translated interface or Arabic font alone does not establish that navigation, controls, and layouts work well from right to left.
RTL WordPress themes with documented support
Kadence
The Kadence listing on WordPress.org includes RTL language support among its features. Its 2026 listing snapshot showed version 1.5.2, last updated July 24, 2026, and 500,000+ active installations. That installation figure is directory-wide, not an RTL-specific measure of adoption or quality; the version and update date are a dated snapshot, not a claim about the current release.

Kadence is a reasonable candidate to test, but confirm the current directory listing and inspect the particular templates, locale, and plugins you expect to use.
Astra
Astra’s RTL FAQ says Astra and its Starter Templates have native RTL support. The FAQ names WPML, Polylang, TranslatePress, and Weglot as translation-plugin options. This is Astra’s own product information, not an independent compatibility test of every starter design, plugin version, or RTL locale.

How to compare themes for your site
- Check the support claim. Look for a current theme-directory listing or official documentation, rather than relying on an unsupported “RTL-ready” label. Kadence’s directory listing and Astra’s FAQ offer specific claims to verify.
- Set the intended locale. Configure WordPress for the RTL language the site will actually use. Direction detection is locale-based; changing interface language or adding a font is not the same as testing an RTL site.
- Inspect the pages that matter. Review text flow, navigation order, alignment, sidebars, forms, comments, and tables. For a shop, course site, or other specialized site, check the product, checkout, lesson, or other relevant layouts as well.
- Evaluate translation separately from layout. Translation-ready generally means theme strings can be translated; it does not, by itself, prove that layout and controls are usable in RTL. WordPress distinguishes internationalization from locale direction in its RTL reference.
- Test the complete setup. Preview both the public site and editor with the planned translation plugin, fonts, builder, starter design, and custom CSS enabled. Check the exact theme version and integrations you intend to launch with.
Choose by site type and workflow
A publisher, business site, portfolio, shop, and course site can need different templates and integrations. First identify the content and features the site requires, then verify that the intended theme design and plugins support them in the target locale. The available documentation does not establish a controlled comparison across these site types, nor does it show that one candidate is faster or more usable than the other.
Use the editor as well as the public preview in your evaluation. A page can look acceptable to visitors while being awkward to maintain or edit in the intended language; the relevant test is the actual combination of theme, locale, plugins, and authoring workflow.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
For the question “What is the best RTL WordPress theme in 2026?”, the most defensible answer is to shortlist themes with verifiable RTL claims and choose by testing the site you plan to build. The documented support claims above can help start that shortlist, but they do not amount to a ranking, hands-on usability review, or performance comparison.
Theme listings and vendor documentation can change. Check the live sources and test representative pages in the intended locale before committing to a design.
