Then choose dimensions and compression by checking the image at the size shoppers will actually see it, including any product zoom view. JPG is not the right choice for every asset: transparent logos, icons, and crisp flat graphics often suit PNG better, while a platform or image CDN may deliver a JPG upload as WebP or AVIF to compatible browsers.
When JPG is the right choice
JPG is a practical format for product photography: fabric, food, furniture, skin tones, packaging, and other images with gradients and many colors. Shopify’s Help Center describes JPEG as ideal for photography and other still images with complex colors, and lists products, banners or slideshows, and page or blog images as uses. JPEG uses lossy compression, which can reduce file size by discarding some image information.
That trade-off is often acceptable for a photograph, where subtle changes may be hard to notice at the displayed size. It is less suitable when a file needs transparency or sharply defined flat-color edges. Do not choose a format simply because it is familiar or because every image on a store uses the same extension.
Choose by the content, not the page type
- Product photographs: Start with JPG/JPEG for complex-color still images. Check detail at both the normal product-display size and any zoom size customers can open.
- Transparent logos and icons: PNG is generally a better fit when transparency or clean flat-color shapes matter.
- Flat graphics and embedded text: Compare the edge quality carefully. If the text can be real page text instead of part of an image, use live text: text embedded in an image is not selectable or searchable.
- Images needing transparency: Do not save them as JPG; JPG does not preserve a transparent background.
One product page may reasonably use several formats: JPG for the item photograph, PNG for a transparent mark, and ordinary HTML text for the product title and description.

Choose image dimensions for the way shoppers see them
A large source file is not automatically a good delivery file. A small product-card image does not need the same delivered dimensions as a full-width campaign banner or a zoomable product detail. Serving an oversized original to every context can send more image data than that context needs; serving an undersized image can make it look soft or pixelated.
Make variants for distinct display contexts
- List where the image appears. Include collection grids, product detail pages, mobile layouts, banners, and zoom or lightbox views.
- Determine the rendered dimensions for each context. Use the actual theme or layout sizes as a guide rather than choosing one arbitrary image size for the entire store.
- Generate or request responsive candidates. Provide suitable image sizes for different screen and layout contexts so the browser does not have to use the largest asset everywhere. web.dev recommends correct display dimensions and responsive image candidates.
- Check the crop as well as the pixel dimensions. A square grid crop and a wide banner may show different parts of the same source. Keep important product details in view at each crop.
- Inspect the largest shopper-facing view. Confirm that labels, textures, and edges remain clear at the actual zoom level customers can use.
There is no single universal pixel dimension for an ecommerce product image: theme layout, responsive behavior, crop, and zoom all affect what is appropriate. Shopify’s product-media guidance is one platform-specific reference: it says a 2048 × 2048 pixel square image usually displays best for square product images. That is not a general requirement for other platforms or for every image shape.

Compress JPG without making product photos look blurry
There is no universal JPEG quality setting that works for every product photograph. The visible result depends on the picture, its dimensions, the crop, and how it is rendered. Compare representative images at the sizes shoppers will see instead of selecting compression solely by a generic quality number.
A repeatable comparison workflow
- Choose representative images. Include a plain product against a simple background and a detail-rich or textured image. Include any image where fine print, stitching, hair, or subtle gradients matter.
- Export a few compression candidates. Keep the source unchanged, and create alternatives with different compression levels using your image editor or platform workflow.
- Compare at rendered size. Check the product grid, the product detail layout, and the largest zoom or display size. Look for blockiness, smeared texture, ringing around edges, color shifts, and loss of small details.
- Check file weight alongside appearance. Prefer a smaller file only when the visual difference is acceptable for that specific use. A tiny thumbnail may tolerate more compression than a hero image or a close-up detail.
- Review the final crop and browser output. Compression can look acceptable in an editor but less convincing in the real page layout. Verify the delivered image at the viewport sizes relevant to your customers.
Shopify’s 2026 image-size guide reports lossy WebP images as 24% to 34% smaller than JPEG at equivalent SSIM quality index. This is a reported comparison, not a promised saving for an individual store or file. Actual results depend on the images and delivery workflow.

Separate the format you upload or keep as a source from the format a platform serves to a visitor. Shopify says its image service detects supported browser formats and can deliver WebP or AVIF. Shopify’s theme-image documentation likewise describes delivery of those formats to supported browsers. This behavior is platform-dependent; an uploaded JPG does not guarantee automatic conversion on every ecommerce stack.

Google Search Central lists JPEG, WebP, and AVIF among supported image formats and recommends responsive image techniques. The practical choice is therefore not necessarily “upload only the newest format”: a store can retain a suitable JPG source while its delivery system negotiates a modern format for supported browsers.
Shopify-specific limits and delivery behavior
Shopify’s Help Center states that product and collection images may be up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, and that files must be smaller than 20 MB. Those are Shopify product-media limits, not general web standards or a recommendation to upload images at those maximums. Shopify also says its image service chooses a format supported by the customer’s web client.
For Shopify themes, the developer documentation recommends built-in image_url and image_tag features for responsive sizing, dimensions, focal points, format negotiation, and CDN behavior. Manually constructing image URLs can bypass built-in optimizations. If you use another platform, check its own upload constraints and image transformation documentation rather than applying Shopify’s numbers to it.

Check the live storefront, not just the source file
When format negotiation or responsive sizing matters, inspect what the storefront actually sends. In browser developer tools, open the Network panel, reload the product page, and select the image request. Review its request URL, response headers, dimensions where available, and the response’s content type. Repeat at a mobile and desktop viewport if the page requests different image candidates. The precise controls and labels vary by browser.
Also verify that the displayed crop matches the product, that the image is discoverable on the relevant product page, and that filenames describe the item rather than using generic names such as image1.jpg. Google Search Central recommends descriptive filenames where possible. Useful filenames can provide context, but they do not replace an appropriate product page or accurate page content.

The product photo looks blurry in the grid
Check whether the storefront is using an image candidate with enough dimensions for the rendered slot, and whether the source was already compressed or resized too aggressively. Compare the same image at its original and delivered sizes. If the page uses responsive candidates, verify the selected candidate at the affected viewport.

The image looks fine until a shopper zooms in
Zoom exposes detail that may not be visible in the thumbnail. Confirm that the zoom feature loads a larger appropriate variant rather than enlarging the grid thumbnail. Inspect compression artifacts at that zoom level and adjust the source or delivery candidate if necessary.

JPG cannot preserve transparency. Use an appropriate transparent format such as PNG for the logo, and verify that the platform preserves the transparency when it transforms or serves the file.
The browser still receives JPG when you expected WebP or AVIF
First confirm that the platform or CDN supports format negotiation and that the browser supports the expected format. Then inspect the actual image request and response rather than inferring delivery format from the uploaded filename. On Shopify, avoid manually constructed image URLs that bypass its built-in image features.
The upload is rejected
Check your store platform’s own pixel-dimension, megapixel, and file-size limits. Shopify’s stated product and collection image limits are under 20 MB and up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels; those thresholds do not establish the limits for another platform.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the asset a complex-color photograph? Start with JPG/JPEG.
- Does it need transparency or crisp flat shapes? Consider PNG instead.
- Can embedded text be replaced with selectable page text? Prefer live text where practical.
- Do the dimensions suit the actual grid, detail, banner, and zoom contexts?
- Have you compared compression at the sizes and crops shoppers will see?
- Does the platform transform or negotiate delivery formats, and have you verified the live output?
- Are filenames descriptive and images placed on relevant product pages?
