For multiple locations with search or other locator features, use a store-locator plugin or build a custom JavaScript locator. A Google-backed plugin needs a Google Maps Platform API key, and the APIs and billing depend on the features you enable.
Choose between a map and a store locator
A map for one shop helps visitors see its location and open directions. A store locator is a directory for multiple locations, often with search or filters. Google’s guidance recommends an Embed API iframe for a simple single-store map and a plugin or custom JavaScript for a multi-location locator. See Google’s Maps Embed API quick start and its store-locator guidance.
Add a map for one location
- Open Google’s Maps Embed API quick start and follow its instructions to find the location and generate the map iframe.
- In WordPress, open the page where the map should appear and add a Custom HTML block.
- Paste the iframe code, preview the page, and publish when the map displays as expected. Visitors can interact with the map and use its directions button.
Google says an API key may be needed for this method. This embedded map is not a searchable directory for multiple branches.
Add a multi-location locator with a plugin
A plugin is a practical choice when you want to manage several locations without writing custom JavaScript. WordPress.org currently documents locator features for both WP Store Locator and WP Go Maps. Their listings describe different setup options and map engines; they do not establish which plugin is easiest, fastest, or best for every site.
#1 Best Overall
WP Store Locator
- In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New, install and activate WP Store Locator, or upload the plugin folder.
- Follow the plugin’s onboarding and choose a map service. Its listing says OpenStreetMap does not require a Google API key.
- If you choose Google Maps, add and validate the key in the plugin’s API settings.
- Set the map’s starting location and enter each store’s information.
- Add the Store Locator block to the desired page, or insert the
[wpsl]shortcode, then preview and publish.
WP Go Maps
- Install and activate WP Go Maps from WordPress, then create a map and add markers for your locations.
- In the map editor, enable its Store Locator feature and configure the locator as needed.
- Choose a map engine. The plugin listing says a Google Maps key is required when Google is selected and describes alternative engines.
- Insert the map on a page using the shortcode or block supplied by the plugin, then preview it.
Plugin labels and available features can change. Check the current WordPress.org listing and plugin settings for compatibility, maintenance, support, and any paid-feature requirements before choosing.
Set up a Google Maps Platform API key
If your chosen plugin uses Google Maps Platform, Google recommends creating or using a Cloud project, enabling the APIs that the plugin’s features require, and generating an API key. Google’s Maps Platform for WordPress Users FAQ identifies Maps JavaScript API, Places API, and Directions API as common examples: map display, place information, and directions may use different APIs. They are not universally all required; follow the plugin’s documented requirements and enable only what your implementation uses. Google’s Quick Start Widget can help with setup.

- Create or select a Google Cloud project and attach a billing account.
- Enable the Maps Platform APIs required by the plugin or implementation.
- Create an API key and enter it in the plugin’s Google Maps settings.
- Restrict the key. Google’s FAQ recommends HTTP referrer restrictions for client-side Maps JavaScript API use; IP-address restrictions are intended for server-side web services.
- Test the locator on the live site and check that the key restriction allows requests from the site’s domain.
Understand billing before launch
Google Maps Platform charges per billable event, and the cost varies by SKU. Each SKU has its own free monthly usage amount; usage beyond the applicable free amount is charged to the billing account. The APIs used and the number of map loads, directions requests, or place-data requests affect the bill, so there is no single reliable price for every WordPress locator. Check Google’s current pricing and calculator for the APIs you plan to use and your expected traffic. Google describes the usage model in its WordPress FAQ.
Choose a provider and feature set
Compare options against what your visitors need rather than assuming every locator needs the same stack.

- get around with real-time traffic information
- Number of locations: An iframe can suit one address; multiple branches generally call for a plugin or custom locator.
- Visitor features: Check whether you need directions, nearby search, filters, or custom location fields.
- Map engine: A plugin may offer alternatives to Google Maps. WP Store Locator’s listing identifies OpenStreetMap as an option that does not need a Google key.
- Insertion and upkeep: A block or shortcode avoids custom locator code; a custom build offers flexibility but requires someone to maintain it.
- Usage costs: If using Google, account for the relevant billable APIs and expected usage before launch.
Troubleshoot a map that does not load
If the map is blank, an API error appears, or the locator lacks expected results, check these common configuration points:
- Confirm the plugin’s required API is enabled in the correct Cloud project.
- Verify the billing account is attached and active.
- Check that the API key is valid, entered in the plugin, and its restrictions allow your site’s domain for client-side requests.
- Review quotas and any usage caps you set; a limit can block further requests.
- For missing places or directions, confirm the selected plugin features have the corresponding API enabled rather than assuming map display alone supplies every service.
For a locator beyond a plugin’s capabilities, Google’s store-locator guide points to a codelab and sample code for a custom JavaScript implementation. That approach requires replacing the sample’s placeholder API key and maintaining the custom code.
