How to Fix Images Not Loading in Microsoft Edge

If images are missing in Microsoft Edge, first check whether the problem affects one page or every site. Reload the page, try the same URL in another browser, and then work through cache, extensions, privacy settings, network, and Edge repair in that order. This approach can identify the cause while avoiding unnecessary resets or data loss.

First find out whether Edge, the website, or your network is responsible

Look at the scope of the problem before changing settings. If only one site has blank image boxes, the site itself, its image host, or a site-specific browser permission may be involved. If images are missing on many unrelated sites, Edge settings, an extension, cached data, or a network filter become more likely.

  1. Reload the page. If the image still does not appear, open the same URL in another browser.
  2. Try a different website that normally displays images.
  3. If practical, test the page on another network, such as a phone hotspot.

If the page and images fail in more than one browser, the cause may be the website or network rather than Edge. Microsoft recommends checking the connection, restarting the modem or router when appropriate, and contacting the site owner if the problem is limited to that site. Microsoft’s network troubleshooting guidance covers connection checks. If other sites load normally in Edge and the same affected page works elsewhere, focus on Edge-specific settings below.

Clear cached images and files

A stale or damaged cached file can make a page display incorrectly. Microsoft notes that clearing temporary internet files can sometimes fix page-display problems. Clearing the cache is less disruptive than clearing cookies or resetting Edge, though pages may take longer to load the next time because files have to be downloaded again.

  3. Set the time range to All time.
  4. Select Cached images and files. You can also select Browsing history if you want to remove it; do not select additional categories unless you intend to clear them.
  5. Select Clear now, then reload the affected page.

You can also reach the control through Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data. Microsoft’s walkthrough is at View and delete browser history in Microsoft Edge.

Check extensions that can block page resources

Ad blockers, privacy extensions, and other add-ons can prevent a page from requesting images. Temporarily disable extensions to test; if images return, enable the extensions individually to identify which one is interfering.

  1. Open Settings and more > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Turn extensions off, then reload the page with missing images.
  3. If images appear, turn extensions back on one at a time and reload after each change.
  4. When the problem returns, review that extension’s site access, blocking rules, and allowlist options. Make an exception only for a site you trust.

Microsoft’s general page-troubleshooting steps include disabling extensions when pages do not load correctly. See Microsoft Edge connection and page troubleshooting. Turning off all extensions is a diagnostic test; re-enable unaffected extensions afterward.

Review tracking prevention, cookies, and site permissions

Tracking prevention can affect resources a page loads from other domains. Edge provides Basic, Balanced, and Strict settings. Microsoft warns that Strict blocks the most trackers but may cause some websites not to behave as expected. If a site fails only under Strict, test Balanced or make a site-specific exception rather than broadly weakening privacy protections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
  2. Under Tracking prevention, note the current level. If it is Strict, temporarily test Balanced, then reload the affected site.
  3. If that resolves the issue, restore your preferred overall level and use the site’s information or permissions controls to add an exception only if you trust the site.
  4. If the site relies on cross-site data, temporarily allow cookies and site data for that site, reload it, and undo the exception if it makes no difference.

Microsoft explains the available modes and their trade-offs in Learn about tracking prevention in Microsoft Edge and documents temporarily allowing cookies and site data.

Test the network and site before changing Edge further

If images fail across browsers or only while you are on one connection, investigate the network. A router, filtering service, VPN, proxy, or organization network may block the image host even when the main page opens. Compare the page on another network if possible. Restart your modem or router if the connection itself is unreliable; if the issue is limited to one website across browsers, contact that site’s support team.

A useful distinction is whether the page’s text loads but images hosted elsewhere do not. That pattern can point to a blocked or unavailable image domain, though it does not by itself identify which network component is responsible. Avoid changing DNS, firewall, or security settings at random; use the cross-browser and alternate-network tests to narrow the cause first.

Check whether a work or school policy blocks images

On managed devices, a local setting may not control whether images load. Microsoft Edge includes the policies ImagesAllowedForUrls and ImagesBlockedForUrls, which administrators can use to allow or block images for specified sites. If the problem appears on a work or school device, especially if settings are locked or the same restriction affects multiple users, ask your administrator to check the browser policy rather than trying to override it yourself.

Microsoft lists these policies in its Edge policy reference for ImagesAllowedForUrls and ImagesBlockedForUrls.

Update Edge, then repair it on Windows

Install available updates

An outdated browser can have problems that are fixed in a later release. In Edge, open Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, or go to edge://settings/help. Let Edge check for updates and follow any prompt to restart the browser. Then test the affected page again.

Repair Edge in Windows

If the issue persists across sites after the earlier checks, Windows can repair the Edge installation. Close Edge first, then open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair and follow the prompts. The exact wording can vary by Windows version. Microsoft describes the repair route in its Edge troubleshooting guidance.

Reset Edge only after narrower fixes fail

A reset is broader than clearing cached files or testing an extension, so reserve it for a problem that remains after those checks. Open edge://settings/reset, choose Restore settings to their default values, and confirm. Microsoft says bookmarks, history, and saved passwords are preserved; pinned tabs, the startup page, search engine, and extensions are reset. Review your settings afterward and re-enable only the extensions you need.

If Edge is managed by an organization, a reset may not remove administrator-enforced policies. Contact the administrator if the setting returns or remains unavailable. Microsoft’s reset instructions are included in its troubleshooting steps.

Choose the fix by scope and impact

Test or fix Best clue Scope and impact
Cross-browser and alternate-network test Establishes whether the issue follows Edge, the site, or one connection Diagnostic only; changes no data or settings
Clear cached images Images are stale or display incorrectly in Edge Clears cached files; leaves cookies untouched if only that category is selected
Disable extensions One or more add-ons may block image requests Reversible; identify the specific extension and restore the others
Adjust tracking prevention or site cookies A site behaves differently under Strict or with cross-site data restricted Prefer a temporary, site-specific exception over a global privacy change
Update, repair, or reset Edge Problem persists across sites and narrower checks Increasingly broad; reset changes browser preferences and extensions
Ask the site owner or administrator Failure follows a website across browsers or a managed policy applies Addresses a site-side or organization-controlled cause outside the user’s settings

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of a page for debugging or documentation rather than fixing what you see in your own browser, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and output formats. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

When to contact support

  • Contact the website owner if the same page fails to show images in multiple browsers and on more than one network.
  • Contact your organization’s IT administrator if Edge settings are managed, the issue affects a work or school device, or image policies may be enforced.
  • Continue Edge-specific troubleshooting if other browsers and networks work but Edge does not.
