GeneratePress is a strong starting point for performance-focused builds; Astra suits teams that want broad design and commerce options; Kadence and Blocksy are worthwhile candidates when their workflows fit. A theme can support a sound technical foundation, but it cannot guarantee higher rankings. Choose by testing the theme with your actual content, plugins, hosting and design—not by treating a demo or one benchmark as a promise.
What should an SEO expert look for in a WordPress theme?
A theme affects the templates, markup, layout and navigation that shape how a site works. WordPress.org notes that themes and customizations can disrupt some of WordPress’s search-friendly behavior. Good code, clear navigation, descriptive links and placing important content near the top of a page are relevant considerations in its SEO documentation.
Compare themes across the site you are building, rather than looking for a feature labelled “SEO.” Assess:
- Performance and asset footprint: Check Core Web Vitals, page weight and requests on representative pages. Results depend on the theme configuration and the rest of the site.
- Responsive behavior: Inspect real mobile layouts, menus, typography and interactive elements—not only a theme’s mobile-first claim.
- Accessibility and content structure: Review keyboard navigation, headings, landmarks and contrast, and make sure the design supports readable content.
- Maintenance and compatibility: Confirm the theme is maintained and works with the WordPress version, editor, plugins and commerce tools the project needs.
- Workflow and design: Consider how efficiently your team can build, revise and maintain the required pages without adding unnecessary complexity.
A theme is one part of an SEO program. Useful content, information architecture, links and ongoing technical work still matter; a theme choice alone is not a ranking strategy.

How do the leading theme options compare?
The figures below are reported by CyberChimps for its 2026 comparison, not measurements made for this article. They describe that publisher’s test setup and should not be read as expected results for every installation.
| Theme | CyberChimps-reported test figures | Where it may fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GeneratePress | LCP 1.32 seconds; INP 8 milliseconds; CLS 0; 6 HTTP requests; 25 KB page size. | Performance-focused developers, agencies and technically confident site builders. | Strong figures in this publisher’s test do not establish the result on another site. GeneratePress describes its theme as lightweight and focused on speed, stability and accessibility. |
| Astra | Not stated in the cited CyberChimps figures presented here. | Teams seeking a wide range of layouts, page-builder compatibility or commerce features. | WordPress.org’s listing describes mobile-first design, schema markup, performance focus and commerce compatibility as product features; these are vendor statements, not independent comparative measurements. |
| Kadence | LCP 1.45 seconds; INP 8 milliseconds; CLS 0. | Worth testing when its design and block-editor workflow suit the project. | These figures are from CyberChimps’s test; the cited material does not establish a detailed current plan or support comparison. |
| Blocksy | LCP 1.6 seconds; INP 16 milliseconds; CLS 0. | A candidate when its features and workflow fit the build. | Do not infer a universal ranking from one test environment. |
| Responsive | LCP 1.74 seconds; INP 24 milliseconds; CLS 0. | A candidate for teams seeking a lightweight starting point. | CyberChimps reports conflicting page-size values—41 KB in its summary table and 76 KB in its detailed section—so neither is a settled figure. |
| OceanWP | LCP 2.91 seconds; INP 16 milliseconds; CLS 0; 22 HTTP requests; 326 KB page size. | Consider testing it if the site needs its available options. | CyberChimps reported the highest request count and page size of its six tested themes; test the actual configuration before deciding. |
CyberChimps says its comparison weighted Core Web Vitals at 40%, theme footprint at 25%, mobile responsiveness at 15%, accessibility at 10% and maintenance health at 10%. Those are the publisher’s chosen weights, not an industry standard. Its results are useful as a starting point for questions to test, not a universal ordering.

Should you choose GeneratePress or Astra?
Choose GeneratePress when a controlled, performance-focused build is the priority
GeneratePress is a sensible shortlist choice for developers and agencies that value a lightweight foundation and are comfortable shaping the site around their requirements. Its vendor describes the theme as focused on speed, stability and accessibility. CyberChimps reported the strongest raw performance figures among the six themes in its 2026 test, but that result is specific to its setup and should be reproduced against the actual site before it informs a decision.
Choose Astra when layout breadth or commerce compatibility matters more
Astra’s WordPress.org listing describes mobile-first design, schema markup, performance focus, and compatibility with WooCommerce, SureCart and other commerce plugins. These points can make it worth evaluating for a site with varied layouts or commerce needs. They are product claims, not proof that Astra will outperform another theme on your own pages.

The practical choice is not “fastest theme versus best SEO theme.” Compare the effort required to build and maintain the site, the features it actually needs, and measured results from a representative implementation.
How should you test themes on a real site?
- Build a comparable test environment. Use the same host, WordPress and PHP versions, content, images, homepage layout and measurement tools for each candidate.
- Record what you tested. Note the exact theme version, active extensions and test date. Keep other variables constant so a difference is not mistakenly attributed to the theme.
- Measure representative pages. Include the homepage and important page types, such as an article, landing page or product page. Check Core Web Vitals and asset footprint, then inspect responsive behavior and accessibility.
- Test the actual workflow. Confirm the editor, page builder, SEO plugin and any commerce integrations behave as intended, and check for duplicate or missing output.
- Choose on evidence and maintainability. Compare the results alongside design requirements and the team’s capacity to keep the site updated. A tiny lab footprint is not useful if the theme makes the required site difficult to build or maintain.
Does a WordPress theme replace an SEO plugin?
No. Themes primarily shape templates, layout, markup and theme-specific output; plugins can add SEO functions such as metadata. WordPress.org’s documentation says meta tags are not included by default and identifies plugins as one way to add metadata. Check the chosen theme with the site’s actual SEO plugin stack, and verify that metadata or other output is neither missing nor duplicated.
