The right dimensions depend on what “header” means in your site builder: a logo, a banner/background, or a social-sharing image. If the platform gives no specific rule, start with a sharp square master between 2,000 × 2,000 and 2,500 × 2,500 pixels, keep important content near the center, export an appropriately compressed WebP, JPEG or PNG, and check desktop and mobile previews.
That range is a practical starting point inferred from Squarespace’s general recommendation of 2,500-pixel-wide images—not a universal requirement. A square file is not automatically suitable for a banner, and social cards normally use a different, landscape ratio.
First identify which “header” you are making
The word header describes several unrelated components. Before changing pixels, open your editor’s documentation or the component settings and identify the destination.
| Component | Typical shape | What controls the result |
|---|---|---|
| Logo or brand mark | Often square, but sometimes wide or transparent | Displayed CSS size, transparent padding, maximum upload dimensions and retina scaling |
| Website banner or hero background | Usually wider than tall | Container ratio, cover cropping, focal-point controls and responsive breakpoints |
| Social-sharing or link-preview image | Platform-specific, commonly landscape | Open Graph or social-network crop, minimum dimensions and preview rules |
Ask where the file will appear, what aspect ratio that slot expects, whether the builder crops with cover, and whether desktop and mobile use different containers. A square upload can be resized successfully while still being cropped badly if the destination is rectangular.

Recommended square dimensions when no rule is supplied
Use a 2,000–2,500 pixel master
A square master around 2,000–2,500 pixels on each side gives responsive systems enough source detail for large displays and high-density screens. It also leaves room for the platform to generate smaller derivatives. Treat this as a starting range, not a promise that every component accepts it.
Squarespace currently says a 2,500-pixel image width is ideal for most images and that its responsive system creates multiple widths automatically. For banner images, Squarespace recommends 1,500–2,500 pixels wide, wider than tall, and says site-wide banners should not exceed 2,500 pixels. Its guidance also notes that image blocks do not have one specific height-and-width requirement. Those statements apply to Squarespace components, not to every website builder.
Is 2,000 × 2,000 good?
Yes, for a square logo, avatar-style brand tile, or a component that genuinely preserves a 1:1 ratio, 2,000 × 2,000 is a sensible source file when the platform does not publish a different limit. It is more resolution than most visitors will see at display size, but responsive resizing makes that useful. Do not assume the same file is appropriate for a full-width hero banner or a social card.
Do not confuse source dimensions with display dimensions
A logo displayed at 160 CSS pixels may use a 320-pixel source on a two-times-density screen. A 2,000-pixel upload does not force the browser to render 2,000 pixels; the builder normally creates or requests a smaller variant. The relevant constraints are the upload maximum, the slot’s aspect ratio, the generated image quality and the file weight.

Why a square image gets cropped
The container is not square
Many headers use a rectangular box and apply a cover-style crop. The image fills the box without distortion, so the browser removes portions from the top and bottom or from the sides. A 1:1 source placed in a 3:1 banner cannot remain fully visible unless the site leaves empty space or changes the fitting mode.
Mobile and desktop use different ratios
A desktop hero may be wide while a mobile header is short or nearly square. A focal point that looks centered on desktop can lose a face, product or wordmark on mobile. Preview both breakpoints and move the focal point if the builder provides that control.
Transparent padding changes perceived cropping
A logo can be technically centered while its visible artwork sits high or low inside a transparent canvas. Trim unnecessary transparent margins or position the artwork optically, not merely by measuring the canvas edges.
Text is placed too close to an edge
Responsive crops are not guaranteed to preserve a universal “safe-area percentage.” Official guidance does not establish one cross-platform number. Keep critical text and logos near the center, then verify the exact template’s crop in its preview. Treat any safe-area value supplied by a particular builder as specific to that builder.

When a square is the wrong format
Full-width banners and hero backgrounds
Use the banner ratio requested by the template rather than forcing a square. Squarespace’s current banner guidance calls for images between 1,500 and 2,500 pixels wide, wider than tall, with a 2,500-pixel maximum for site-wide banners. If your hero slot is 16:9, 3:1 or another ratio, compose a separate crop at that ratio. A square master can be retained as an archive, but it should not be the only production asset.
Social-sharing and link previews
Social metadata has its own dimensions. Wix currently recommends a 1.91:1 Open Graph image at 1,200 × 630 pixels; it lists 200 × 200 pixels as a minimum and recommends 600 × 315 pixels for smaller previews. That is landscape, not square. A square image may be accepted by a network yet letterboxed or cropped in the link card.
Platform-specific cover images
Wix lists 1,500 × 500 pixels for a Twitter header cover. This illustrates why a question about “the website header” cannot be answered with one universal square size: the destination, not the word header, determines the specification.
Prepare the image so resizing stays clean
Choose the right file type
- WebP: a practical default when the platform accepts it, usually providing smaller files than equivalent JPEG or PNG exports.
- JPEG: suitable for photographs and gradients; choose quality high enough to avoid visible blocking.
- PNG: useful for transparency, flat graphics and sharp text, but often heavier for photos.
Follow the builder’s accepted-format list. A technically excellent WebP is not useful if that editor only accepts JPEG and PNG.

Control file weight
Squarespace recommends uploads of 500 KB or less when practical. That is a practical optimization target, not a universal upload limit. Compress after resizing, remove unnecessary metadata, and compare the result at the actual display size. Excessively aggressive compression creates halos around logos and text.
Build a centered master with alternate crops
Keep the original layered file. Export a square master for 1:1 slots, a wide banner crop for hero areas and a 1,200 × 630 social image when Open Graph sharing is required. Do not stretch one crop to fit all three contexts.
Check legibility at the rendered size
Zooming into a 2,500-pixel file can hide problems that appear when the logo is rendered at 120 pixels. Inspect the smallest desktop and mobile display sizes, high-density screens and dark-mode backgrounds if the component changes appearance.
A repeatable upload and preview workflow
- Name the component. Record whether it is a logo, banner, hero background, favicon-like mark or social card.
- Read the current component rule. Note accepted formats, maximum dimensions, file-size limits and any stated aspect ratio. Rules can differ between templates and editions.
- Create the correct canvas. Start with a 2,000–2,500 square master only for a genuinely square slot. Create separate rectangular exports for rectangular destinations.
- Place the focal content centrally. Keep faces, product edges, logos and essential words away from likely crop boundaries. Use the builder’s focal-point tool when available.
- Export and compress. Use WebP, JPEG or PNG as supported. Aim for about 500 KB or less where practical without introducing visible artifacts.
- Upload through the component, not a random media field. The component may apply different processing, focal-point controls or responsive variants.
- Preview desktop and mobile. Check the live preview or staging page at several viewport widths. Look for clipped letters, hidden subjects, soft detail and unexpected background color.
- Validate the published result. Clear any image or CDN cache, then inspect the page in a private window and on a real phone. Social previews may cache an earlier image separately from the website.
Technical checks for developers
Inspect the rendered image
In browser developer tools, inspect the image element or background rule. Check the requested URL, intrinsic dimensions, rendered CSS dimensions, object-fit or background sizing, and the source selected by srcset. If a square source is rendered in a short, wide box with object-fit: cover, cropping is expected rather than a download failure.

Confirm responsive sources
Responsive markup may select a smaller file on mobile and a larger one on desktop. Verify that the mobile source is not an accidentally tiny derivative and that its crop still contains the focal content.
Check social metadata separately
Inspect og:image and the declared image dimensions. A perfect site header does not guarantee a correct link preview; those are separate assets and cache paths.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Logo looks blurry | Source is too small, over-compressed or an enlarged derivative is being used | Upload a sharper master, export at a sensible quality and inspect the selected srcset candidate. |
| Top or bottom is missing | Rectangular container uses cover cropping | Use a banner-ratio crop, change the focal point or choose a contain-style setting if the design allows it. |
| Mobile loses the headline | Mobile breakpoint has a different crop | Move critical content toward the center or create a mobile-specific crop. |
| Upload is rejected | Unsupported format, dimensions or file weight | Follow that component’s current limits; convert format, resize and recompress. |
| Image is slow to load | Oversized uncompressed upload or missing responsive variants | Compress, remove metadata, use the platform’s responsive image feature and avoid shipping the 2,500-pixel file to every viewport. |
| Old image still appears | Browser, CDN or social-preview cache | Publish the new asset, purge the relevant cache where possible and test with a private window; social services may require their own refresh process. |

Cost, performance and reliability considerations
- Storage: Keeping a large master is useful, but deliver an optimized derivative rather than the original to every visitor.
- Bandwidth: Responsive widths reduce transfer size on phones. Confirm the platform is generating them instead of serving the largest file universally.
- Visual consistency: Separate crops are more reliable than trusting automatic center-cropping for important text or faces.
- Testing: Test authenticated, consent-gated and JavaScript-heavy pages separately; a screenshot service may report a bot check, blank page or timeout rather than a clean page.
- Cache behavior: A cache hit can return an existing capture quickly, while a fresh capture may require waits for lazy images, network idle or a selector. Choose a cache TTL appropriate to how often the page changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a square website header be 1080 × 1080 pixels?
1080 × 1080 can work for a small square slot, but it is not a universal website-header standard. Use the platform’s component rule first; otherwise a 2,000–2,500-pixel master provides more resizing headroom.
Can I use one image for my logo, hero banner and social preview?
You can, but the results are usually worse. Those components commonly use different ratios and crop rules, so export separate logo, banner and social-card versions.
Why does my image look fine in the editor but not on the live site?
The live page may use a different breakpoint, responsive derivative, cache or CSS crop. Inspect the rendered element, clear relevant caches and test desktop and mobile separately.
