Those are Search guidelines, not a universal rule for every browser or website builder.
What a portfolio favicon should be
A favicon is the small visual identifier shown in browser tabs and in places such as bookmarks and website lists. For a portfolio, it should reinforce your identity without trying to reproduce a detailed logo that becomes unreadable at 16 pixels.
- Use a square canvas. Start with a centered mark, monogram, letter, or geometric symbol with generous padding.
- Prefer high contrast. Check the icon on light and dark browser chrome.
- Remove fine detail. Thin strokes, long words, and complex illustrations disappear when reduced.
- Keep it consistent. Use your portfolio colors, but ensure the silhouette is identifiable without color.
You can draw the asset yourself or use a favicon generator; Shopify notes both approaches in its guidance on adding a favicon (Shopify Help Center).
Choose dimensions and format for the surface that matters
There is no single size rule that applies to every browser, builder, manifest, and search surface. Decide where the image will appear first.

Google’s current Search documentation is the authority for Search eligibility (Define a favicon for Search results). Platform rules can be stricter because they govern an uploader or a particular UI, not Google’s crawler.
Create a reliable favicon set
Raster workflow
- Design the master artwork as a square vector or large raster canvas.
- Export a 512×512 or 256×256 PNG for general use, then inspect it at 48, 32, and 16 pixels.
- Provide an ICO if your hosting workflow or older browser support requires it. An ICO can contain multiple embedded sizes.
- Use a transparent background only when the mark remains visible against both light and dark surfaces.
SVG workflow
An SVG is useful for supported manifest and browser contexts because it scales without rasterization. Keep the file simple, set a viewBox, and test it in the exact browser and site builder you use. Do not treat the manifest documentation as proof that SVG is accepted in every Search or platform upload context.
Quality checks before publishing
- Read the mark at 16×16 without zooming.
- Check contrast and color-blind distinguishability.
- Confirm the file is actually square and not padded by an unintended white rectangle.
- Open the final URL directly in a private browser window to verify it returns an image rather than an HTML error page.
Add the favicon to a custom portfolio site
Google’s documented pattern places a rel="icon" link in the home page’s <head> (Google Search Central):

</head>The ICO declaration is enough for the basic implementation; additional PNG or platform-specific links are optional and should point to real files. Do not change the path on every deployment unless you also update the HTML and understand your cache policy.
Deployment checklist
- Upload the image to the production host, not only your local development server.
- Visit the exact HTTPS URL and confirm a successful response.
- Ensure robots rules, authentication, firewall settings, and CDN access do not block the home page or image.
- Inspect the rendered home page source and verify the link appears in the head.
- Use a hard refresh or a private window; browsers cache favicons aggressively.
Install it in a website builder
Shopify
In Shopify admin, open Online Store, choose your theme, and use the theme’s favicon setting to upload the image. Shopify’s documented 16×16 or 32×32 recommendation applies to its setup, not to all sites or Google Search.
Wix
In the Wix Editor, open the site settings area for the favicon and upload the asset. Wix’s guidance says raster dimensions should be multiples of 48 pixels, while SVG is exempt. Follow the current uploader’s accepted formats and validation messages.
Other builders
Look for a setting named Favicon, Site icon, or Browser icon. If the platform does not expose one, add the rel="icon" link through its custom-code or head-injection feature. Never paste a local file path; the browser needs a public HTTPS URL.

Why the favicon is missing from Google Search
Following the implementation does not guarantee that Google will display the icon. Google defines a Search favicon at the hostname level: a subdirectory cannot have a separate Search favicon from the hostname’s home page.
- The icon is blocked. Make both the home page and image crawlable; remove accidental authentication, restrictive robots directives, or bot blocks.
- The URL changed. Keep the favicon URL stable and update the head only when you intentionally migrate it.
- The image is invalid. Confirm it is square, meets the 8×8 minimum, and uses a format Google lists.
- Google has not recrawled yet. Search display can lag a deployment and remains discretionary even when requirements are met.
- You expected a subdirectory icon. Search uses one favicon for the hostname, not one per portfolio folder.
Use URL inspection and server logs to verify that Googlebot can fetch both resources. Do not infer a crawl failure solely from a missing icon in one result page.
Troubleshooting browser and builder failures
It works in one browser but not another
Check the response content type, file extension, and whether the browser supports the chosen format. Add a conventional ICO or PNG fallback and clear the browser’s favicon cache by testing in a private window.
The tab shows an old icon
Keep the same URL while replacing the file, then hard-refresh. If you must change URLs, update every reference and allow caches to expire.

The builder rejects the upload
Read its exact dimension and format rule. For Wix, use a raster size that is a multiple of 48 or use an accepted SVG. For Shopify, test the 16×16 or 32×32 sizes described in its help documentation.
The icon URL downloads an HTML page
Inspect redirects, CDN rewrites, and server routing. A 200 response containing an error document is not a valid favicon; serve the binary image at the declared path.

FAQ
Can a favicon be rectangular?
For Google Search eligibility, use a square image. A browser may render other shapes, but a square source avoids platform cropping and scaling surprises.
Does adding a favicon improve ranking?
The documented guidance concerns appearance and eligibility in Search results; it does not establish a ranking boost.
Can each portfolio project have its own Google favicon?
Not when projects are subdirectories of one hostname. Google documents one favicon per site hostname.
