A strong portfolio hero image makes two things clear at a glance: what you do and what a visitor can expect to find. Choose an image that supports that message, then prepare it for responsive crops, accessible text, and fast loading. There is no single correct pixel size for every portfolio: the right dimensions depend on the layout and the image treatment.
Choose a hero image that explains your portfolio
Start with the purpose of the page, not with the most dramatic image in your camera roll. A hero image should reinforce your value proposition and help a visitor understand the character of your work. Figma describes hero imagery as a way to communicate a site’s value proposition: Figma’s hero image guide.
Shortlist images by asking whether they are relevant to your work, immediately legible, authentic, emotionally appropriate, and useful to your intended audience. A portrait-heavy portfolio may benefit from a clear photograph of the creator or their work; an illustration portfolio may be better served by one representative piece; a product designer might use a product interface or a carefully chosen project detail. The image should honestly represent what the portfolio contains, rather than promise a kind of work the page does not show.
Compare candidates at the actual size and crop where they will appear. Check whether the focal subject survives the crop, whether any overlaid headline remains readable, and whether the image adds something beyond the words already on the page. Nick Babich’s Adobe Blog discussion offers a useful framework for evaluating purpose, keyword relevance, clarity, authenticity, emotional tone, and whether an image helps the intended audience see themselves in the work: Adobe Blog: designing with hero images.

Use one image when it gives the page a clear message
Several rotating images can compete for attention or dilute the page’s message. Figma makes this design claim, but its cited guidance does not provide a named study, sample, or attributable statistic to establish a universal engagement effect. Treat a carousel as a purposeful design choice, not a default. If a single image represents the portfolio more clearly, use the single image.
What size should a portfolio hero image be?
Use the dimensions your own layout needs; do not treat another organization’s component specification as a universal standard. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) prefers 1920 × 1080 pixels (16:9) for its full-width hero component and says a width at least 1.7 times the height is preferable in that context. That is an NSF-specific recommendation, not a rule for every portfolio: NSF Hero Images authoring guidance.
Adobe Portfolio describes a different platform behavior: it generates image renditions at different widths, with its largest rendition 3840 pixels wide, then selects a rendition according to the visitor’s display size and resolution. Its guidance recommends RGB/sRGB, suitable compression, and avoiding uploads substantially larger than the display container. Those are Adobe Portfolio details, updated March 5, 2026, rather than requirements for all website builders: Adobe Portfolio image renditions.
For a custom site, establish the hero container’s shape and likely display widths first. Choose an image large enough to look sharp at the largest intended display and resolution, but avoid sending unnecessarily huge files to smaller screens. A 16:9 source can work in a wide desktop panel, but a narrower or taller screen may crop away its subject. Test the image in the actual layout rather than relying on its source dimensions alone.

Make the image responsive without losing its subject
A responsive hero must do more than shrink. On a narrow viewport, a wide desktop composition may leave the subject tiny or crop out the important part. Use appropriately sized image candidates for different display sizes, and consider art direction: choose a different crop or alternate composition where the layout needs it. Penn Libraries’ hero guidance demonstrates responsive sources and recommends art direction to show the right image at each screen size: Penn Libraries Design System: Hero.

Practical responsive-image pattern
For an alternate mobile composition, a <picture> element can select a mobile image at a breakpoint and retain a desktop fallback. Replace the sample paths and breakpoint with files and layout rules that exist on your site:
<picture>
<source media="(max-width: 600px)" srcset="/images/portfolio-hero-mobile.webp">
<img
src="/images/portfolio-hero-desktop.webp"
alt="Illustration of a blue ceramic vase beside a small plant"
width="1920"
height="1080"
>
</picture>
The dimensions shown in this example describe the desktop file only; use that file’s actual intrinsic dimensions. The example alt text is appropriate only if the image communicates meaningful information not already conveyed nearby. If the image is decorative behind adjacent HTML text, use an empty alternative instead, as described below.
Keep the focal point in the safe area
Preview the composition at desktop, tablet, and mobile widths. If your CSS uses cropping such as object-fit: cover, inspect the resulting crop at each width and adjust its focal position as needed. Keep the face, artwork, or project detail that carries the message away from edges likely to be cropped. If no single crop works, use an art-directed alternative rather than shrinking the desktop image until everything is visible.

Keep headlines accessible and readable
Put the portfolio headline and call to action in HTML, not baked into the image. The NSF authoring guidance says, “Text in an image, except for pure decoration, creates accessibility issues.” Real text can reflow on small screens, be read by assistive technology, and be restyled; text flattened into a graphic cannot provide those benefits: NSF Hero Images authoring guidance.
Check contrast and readability where text overlays imagery. If a headline competes with a detailed background, use a suitable overlay or place the text beside the image instead of relying on a fragile crop or tiny lettering inside the picture. W3C WAI’s image tutorial explains how to choose text alternatives according to an image’s role: W3C WAI Images Tutorial.

Choose alt text according to the image’s role
- Informative image: Provide a concise equivalent for the essential information the image contributes in context.
- Decorative image: Use a null alternative, written as
alt="", when the image adds no information beyond nearby content. - Functional image: If the image is part of a link or button, describe the function or destination of that control.
Do not repeat a nearby headline verbatim or describe visual details that do not matter to the page’s message. Alt text is a contextual text alternative, not a caption or an inventory of every visible object.
Optimize the hero for loading
A large image can be costly to download, so use a suitably compressed file and avoid serving a source substantially larger than the display requires. Adobe Portfolio’s advice on compression and upload size applies to that platform; on a custom site, check how your own publishing system creates and serves image variants: Adobe Portfolio image renditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not lazy-load the hero if it appears above the fold. web.dev recommends against lazy-loading an above-the-fold hero; eager loading is the normal default, and high fetch priority can be used for an important Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) image. Lazy loading is intended for images further down the page: web.dev: Responsive images.
For example, a meaningful image can be marked as eager and given high priority where appropriate:
<img
src="/images/portfolio-hero.webp"
alt="A close-up of a hand-drawn botanical illustration"
width="1920"
height="1080"
loading="eager"
fetchpriority="high"
>
Use accurate intrinsic dimensions for the file. Reserve lazy loading for images that are initially offscreen, rather than applying it indiscriminately to every image.

Check rights and attribution before publishing
If you did not create the image, confirm that its license and permissions allow the intended use. The sources cited here do not give legal advice about any particular asset, so check the actual license terms and any restrictions that apply to your image. Penn Libraries recommends adding a caption with a short link to the image source where attribution is appropriate: Penn Libraries Design System: Hero.

Review the hero before launch
- Check the message: Ask someone unfamiliar with the portfolio what kind of work they expect after seeing the image and headline.
- Preview multiple widths: Inspect desktop and narrow screens, including the crop and the placement of overlaid text.
- Verify accessibility: Keep meaningful text in HTML and choose informative, decorative, or functional alt text according to the image’s purpose.
- Check loading behavior: Ensure the above-the-fold image is not delayed by lazy loading, and inspect the delivered file size and variant.
- Confirm permissions: Check the image license and add source credit when appropriate.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots to review a live portfolio hero at a particular URL, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; options include viewport and device presets, full-page capture, element capture by CSS selector, custom CSS or JavaScript, and waits for a selector, delay, or network idle. Its clean-shot features accept cookie or consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a portfolio page. Create an API key and see the available parameters in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/portfolio -o shot.webp
Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI agents can use the MCP server’s take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Should my portfolio hero image be a portrait of me?
Only if showing you helps visitors understand the portfolio or its working style. Choose the image that most honestly and clearly represents the work.
Can I put my portfolio headline inside the hero image?
Keep the headline as HTML text rather than embedding it in the image, so it remains accessible and adaptable across screen sizes.
Should I use a carousel for my portfolio hero?
Use one only when multiple frames serve a clear purpose; a single representative image may communicate the portfolio more directly.
