The dependable setup is two parts: a contact form created with a form builder and a popup tool that displays it. Create or reuse your form, confirm that the popup plugin supports that form builder, place the form in the popup (usually with a shortcode or widget), choose a trigger and page rules, then test both the submission and notification email before publishing.
Choose the form and popup tools
First identify the form plugin already active on your site. Installing a second form builder is unnecessary unless the current one cannot be embedded in your chosen popup tool.
| Option | Documented capabilities | Check before installing |
|---|---|---|
| Popup Maker | Contact-form popups, integrations including Contact Form 7 and WPForms, and click-to-open or form-submission triggers. Its listing marks exit-intent and scroll triggers as Pro features. | Compatibility with your form plugin, theme and WordPress version; whether your required trigger or targeting rule is free or premium. |
| WPBean Form Popup | Displays existing forms through shortcode placement, lists integrations including Contact Form 7 and WPForms, and supports button-click, page-load, exit-intent and scroll triggers. Gutenberg and Elementor placement are listed. | Whether the desired trigger, popup location or targeting rule is included in your installed version; some advanced features are premium. |
| Elementor popup workflow | A published tutorial describes creating a popup template and inserting a form widget. | Elementor’s current interface and plan entitlement, since the referenced tutorial was not independently available for verification. |
Plugin listings describe available features, not guaranteed compatibility, accessibility, speed or conversion results. Check the plugin’s current WordPress.org listing and test the exact combination used on your site.
Step 1: Create and publish the contact form
- Open your form builder and create a form with only the fields you need, such as name, email and message.
- Configure the confirmation shown after submission. Use an inline message or a dedicated confirmation page according to the popup design.
- Configure notification emails: set the site owner as the recipient, use the visitor’s email only as the reply-to address, and set a reliable from address on your domain.
- Save the form and publish it on a normal page or obtain its shortcode or embed method. Having a working standalone form makes popup troubleshooting easier.
WPForms maintains separate guidance for creating and publishing forms, notification emails, CAPTCHA choices and pre-launch testing. The exact dashboard labels differ between form builders.

Step 2: Create the popup and insert the form
Using a shortcode-based popup
- Install and activate a popup plugin that lists an integration with your form builder.
- Create a new popup from the plugin’s popup menu.
- In the popup content editor, paste the form shortcode supplied by your form builder. Do not paste a front-end URL when the plugin expects a shortcode.
- Save or publish the popup, then preview it while logged out or in a private browser window.
Using a page-builder widget
If your popup tool and page builder support widgets, open the popup template in the builder, add the form widget, select the saved form, and publish the template. Confirm that the popup feature and form widget are available on your current plan.
Step 3: Select a trigger
Choose one trigger that matches the page’s purpose rather than opening the form unexpectedly.
Rank #2
- Button click: Put a clear “Contact us” or “Get help” button near the relevant content. This is the easiest behavior to explain and test.
- Page load: Use only when the form is central to the page. Set a delay or display limit if your plugin provides one.
- Scroll: Show the form after a reader reaches relevant content. Verify that the trigger does not fire repeatedly during navigation.
- Exit intent: Treat this as an optional follow-up prompt, not the primary contact path. Popup Maker identifies exit-intent as a Pro feature, while WPBean lists it among its trigger options; availability depends on the installed version.
- Form submission: Use this when one popup should lead to another message or next step after a successful submission. Popup Maker lists form-submission triggers.
Check the trigger’s availability in your installed version before building around it.
Step 4: Set display rules and appearance
- Limit the popup to the pages where contact is relevant, such as a Contact, Services or Support page.
- Choose the popup position, width and overlay so the form remains readable on a phone and desktop.
- Add an obvious close button and ensure clicking outside the dialog behaves as intended.
- Set frequency controls, if available, so a visitor who dismisses the popup is not interrupted on every page view.
- Save the targeting rules and confirm that the popup is not also being injected by a theme, page builder or another popup plugin.
Popup Maker documents basic targeting for posts, pages and custom post types and identifies advanced targeting as a premium feature. WPBean lists multiple locations and advanced triggers, with some features marked premium.

- Open the target page in a logged-out browser and activate the trigger.
- Check that the popup fits the viewport, can be closed with its close control, and does not prevent normal page scrolling when closed.
- Submit a valid test message and confirm the expected on-screen confirmation.
- Verify that the notification arrives at the configured recipient and that the reply-to address is the visitor’s address.
- Submit invalid or incomplete data and confirm that field errors are visible and understandable.
- Repeat on a phone-sized viewport and on a desktop viewport.
- Test the page after clearing cache or excluding the popup and form scripts from optimization rules if your caching plugin changes JavaScript behavior.
A form that appears in a popup is not ready until the submission, confirmation and email delivery all work on the live configuration.

The popup opens but the form is blank
Confirm that the shortcode is complete and belongs to the active form, then check whether the popup plugin lists that form builder as supported. Disable duplicate popup or optimization scripts temporarily to identify conflicts.

The button does nothing
Check that the button’s selector or trigger assignment exactly matches the popup’s configured target. Test while logged out, because editor previews can behave differently from the public page.
The form submits but no email arrives
Recheck the notification recipient, from address and reply-to settings. Inspect spam and your mail provider’s delivery logs; a successful browser confirmation does not prove that the message was delivered.

The popup appears on the wrong pages
Review page and post targeting, then look for a second popup rule supplied by your theme or page builder. Premium targeting controls may be required for more specific conditions.
A desired trigger is missing
Verify the installed plugin edition and current feature list. Exit-intent, scroll, advanced targeting, selected-page behavior or tracking can be premium or version-dependent rather than universally available.
Which approach should you use?
- Use Popup Maker when its documented integrations match your existing form plugin and a click or submission trigger is sufficient.
- Use WPBean Form Popup when shortcode placement, Gutenberg or Elementor placement, or its listed trigger choices fit your site.
- Use an Elementor popup workflow when the site already relies on Elementor and the required popup and form features are included in its plan.
- Keep the form on a regular page as a fallback link so visitors can still contact you if scripts are blocked or the popup fails.
Do not select a tool based on unverified conversion, performance or accessibility promises. Those outcomes depend on the theme, content, scripts, email setup and visitor context, so evaluate them on your own site.
