A normal screenshot records only the pixels currently visible in your window. An entire-website screenshot captures the page below the fold as one tall image (or, on some services, a PDF). Use your browser’s built-in full-page command first: Firefox calls it Save full page, Edge calls it Capture full page, Chrome exposes Capture a full size screenshot in DevTools, and iPhone Safari offers Full Page after you take a screenshot.
What a full-page screenshot captures
Full-page capture renders the document beyond the current viewport and combines that content into one file. It is different from a viewport screenshot, which contains only what you can see without scrolling. The result is useful for design reviews, bug reports, archiving a public page, or sharing a long article without sending several separate images.
It is still a snapshot of one browser render. Content that appears only after a delay, a click, a scroll, or a successful login may not be present. After saving, open the file and check the top, middle, and bottom rather than assuming every site rendered perfectly.
Firefox on Windows, macOS, or Linux
- Open the webpage in Firefox and wait for the initial content to finish loading.
- Open Firefox’s screenshot control from the page context menu or the browser’s screenshot tool.
- Select Save full page, not the option for the visible area.
- Review the preview and download the image.
Firefox’s Developer Tools provide a command-line-style alternative when you need a repeatable developer workflow. Open Developer Tools, use the command line, and run :screenshot --fullpage. This captures the entire webpage; the same command can be adapted when you need a single element instead of the document.

Microsoft Edge
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Edge’s Screenshot feature from the browser menu.
- Choose Capture full page.
- Save the result, or use Edge’s available markup tools before saving.
Edge also offers selected-area capture. Use that when “entire website” really means one region, such as a pricing table or article column.
Google Chrome desktop
Chrome’s documented full-page route is in DevTools rather than the ordinary screenshot menu.
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools (for example, with F12 or the browser menu).
- Turn on Device Mode with the phone/tablet icon in the DevTools toolbar.
- Open More options in the Device Mode toolbar.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
Do not confuse it with Capture screenshot, which records only the emulated viewport. Device Mode can change the viewport and, when enabled, can include a device frame. Chrome’s menu labels and placement can vary with browser version and operating system, so use the visible DevTools command rather than relying on a universal keyboard shortcut.
iPhone Safari
- Take a screenshot. On an iPhone with Face ID, press and quickly release the side button and volume-up button together. On a model with a Home button, press the Home and side buttons together.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail when it appears.
- Choose Full Page at the top of the preview.
- Scroll through the longer preview, crop or mark it up if needed, then save or share it using the controls shown.
Apple’s iPhone workflow specifically uses an entire Safari webpage as an example of content that can extend beyond the screen. These steps are for iPhone; do not assume they describe Safari on macOS.

The documented instructions used here cover iPhone Safari, not a current, authoritative full-page workflow for Safari on macOS. If you need a Mac capture, use Firefox, Edge, or Chrome’s documented methods above, or verify the exact Safari version’s current help before depending on it for a deliverable.

Built-in tools require no dedicated capture hardware or paid service. An extension is optional, not automatically better: verify its current publisher, permissions, privacy policy, supported browsers, and export behavior before installing it. Current suitability of named extensions can change, so treat any extension as a choice to evaluate rather than a blanket recommendation.
When a full-page capture is incomplete
Browser documentation describes the capture commands, not a guarantee that every site will produce a perfect single image. The following site behaviors commonly affect what you see:
- Lazy or scroll-triggered content: Images or sections may be requested only as they approach the viewport.
- Nested scrolling areas: A chat panel, table, or code window with its own scrollbar may not expand along with the main document.
- Overlays: Cookie dialogs, newsletter prompts, and chat widgets can cover the page or become part of the image.
- Animation and live updates: A moving carousel, ticker, or video can change between portions of the capture.
- Authentication and bot checks: A login redirect, challenge, or blocked request can leave you with a challenge page or blank section.
Let the page settle, dismiss overlays you are allowed to dismiss, and capture again. If content is still missing, record the browser, operating system, URL, and the site behavior; then choose a workflow that can wait for content or control the page. Do not assume one browser’s result predicts another’s.

The saved image stops near the top
Confirm that you selected the full-page command rather than the viewport command. If you did, reload the page, wait for its visible content, and try again. In Chrome, return to Device Mode’s More options menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot.
Images or sections are missing
Look for lazy loading, a nested scrollbar, or a blocked request. Scroll through the page once, allow images to finish loading, close permitted overlays, and recapture. If the site still depends on interaction or timing, use a wait, click, selector, or custom script in an automation-capable workflow.
A cookie banner or chat box covers the result

The capture is too large to share
Use a viewport or element capture for a focused report, resize the output, or export a paginated PDF. Do not crop away the section needed to explain the defect; save the original separately.
Operational tips for repeat captures
- Use a stable URL and record the capture date, viewport, browser or service, and any logged-in state.
- Wait for fonts, images, and client-rendered content before judging the result.
- Keep animation and auto-rotating content in mind when comparing two captures.
- For batch work, prefer deterministic waits, selectors, and caching over arbitrary long delays.
- Review access rights before capturing private pages, and protect API keys, cookies, and authorization headers.
FAQ
Does a full-page screenshot create a searchable webpage?
No. The usual browser result is an image. If you need selectable text, preserve the original page or use a PDF workflow and verify the PDF’s text layer separately.
