To create a cohort-based course in WordPress, build one reusable curriculum in an LMS, then run each class as a scheduled group with its own enrollment dates, access window, pacing, live meetings and discussion space. LifterLMS Course Cohorts provides the clearest separate-instance model; LearnDash Cohort Manager and Tutor LMS are alternatives when their respective workflows better match your site.
What a cohort-based course is
A cohort is a group of learners who start and progress through a course together over a shared period. Instead of allowing every student to move at an individual pace, you publish a defined run with a start date, weekly workload, meetings and completion expectations.
LifterLMS describes this as a course cohort and its Course Cohorts add-on creates a separate course copy for each cohort. That keeps enrollments, dates, settings and learner progress independent between runs (LifterLMS documentation, updated July 25, 2026).
Define the cohort promise before configuring WordPress
Write the operating rules first. Learners should know exactly what they are joining and when access changes.

#1 Best Overall
- Dates: enrollment opening and closing dates, course start and end dates, and any grace period.
- Workload: expected hours per week and the day on which new material appears.
- Meetings: live-session cadence, timezone, attendance expectations and recording policy.
- Capacity: seat limit, waitlist process and facilitator-to-learner ratio.
- Completion: required lessons, quizzes, assignments, attendance or final project.
- Support: discussion channel, office hours, response-time target and escalation route.
A 4–6 week schedule is recommended for the Learn WordPress program in its 2023 training handbook. Treat that as program guidance, not a universal completion or retention benchmark.
Choose a WordPress LMS that fits the delivery model
| LMS option | Useful cohort capability | Best fit | Check before launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| LifterLMS + Course Cohorts | Creates a separate course instance for each run; supports enrollment and access dates and an option to reset drip dates. | Schools that need strong isolation between cohorts and independent progress. | How curriculum edits are copied to existing instances, payment setup, seat limits, reports and facilitator permissions. |
| LearnDash + Cohort Manager | Cohort Manager provides a centralized workflow for implementing and managing cohort courses; Course Builder organizes lessons, topics, quizzes and progression. | Sites already built around LearnDash’s course structure. | Product availability, date and pacing controls, live-session integration, reporting and maintenance workflow. |
| Tutor LMS | Documents synchronous cohort courses and scheduling Zoom meetings from the course editor. | Programs where scheduled live classes are the primary experience. | Current Zoom integration requirements, recording access, attendance handling, timezone behavior and payment compatibility. |
Compare more than the word “cohort” in a feature list. Verify isolation of learner data, enrollment and access windows, drip controls, quizzes and assignments, live meetings, community tools, certificates, refunds, reporting and compatibility with your existing WordPress theme, payment gateway and LMS extensions.
Build the reusable course curriculum
Start with a master course that contains the instructional material shared by every run. Organize it into sections or weeks, lessons, quizzes, assignments and downloadable resources. Define prerequisites and completion rules before cloning or assigning the first cohort.
Rank #2
LifterLMS’s course builder supports sections, lessons, quizzes and assignments when the relevant add-on is active. Keep cohort-specific information—dates, meeting links, facilitator announcements and group activities—out of reusable lesson content where possible, so the master remains maintainable.
Plan the weekly rhythm
- Release the week’s lessons and reading on a consistent day.
- Schedule a live class or office hour after learners have had time to review the material.
- Set a deadline for the quiz, assignment or peer activity.
- Reserve time for facilitator feedback and a weekly announcement.
Create a fixed-date cohort in LifterLMS
The following is the documented Course Cohorts workflow. Labels can change with plugin versions, so confirm the current interface in your installed release.
- Install and activate the Course Cohorts add-on alongside LifterLMS.
- Open the existing master course and choose New Cohort.
- Enter a name that identifies the run, such as “Product Management — October 2026.”
- Set the enrollment start and enrollment end dates.
- Set the access start and access end dates for enrolled learners.
- Decide whether to reset drip dates. Resetting makes the release schedule begin relative to this cohort rather than inheriting dates from the source course.
- Open the new cohort in the block editor and add run-specific details, including facilitator information, meeting links, calendar instructions and announcements.
- Publish the cohort and verify its product, enrollment method and visibility. If the catalog should show only the current run, hide or close the original master course.
Use a distinct name and internal identifier for every run. That makes refunds, support tickets, reports and certificate records easier to reconcile.
Schedule live classes and asynchronous participation
Live delivery
Create a meeting calendar that states the date, start time, timezone, duration, agenda and access link. Tutor LMS documents scheduling Zoom meetings from the course editor for synchronous cohort courses. Regardless of LMS, decide where recordings live, how long they remain available and how attendance is recorded.
Between-session community
Add a discussion space for introductions, weekly check-ins, peer feedback and facilitator announcements. It may be a WordPress community extension, a private forum or an external workspace. WordPress Training describes asynchronous engagement through its #training-cohorts Slack channel; use an equivalent channel with clear posting and moderation rules.
Configure enrollment, payments and access safely
Connect the cohort to the payment and enrollment path your site already uses, then make the dates visible before checkout. Decide what happens when enrollment closes, when a learner cancels, when a payment fails and when someone joins late.
- Display the cohort’s start date, end date, timezone and remaining seats (if you enforce a cap).
- Prevent enrollment after the cutoff unless a facilitator explicitly approves an exception.
- Define refund and transfer rules for a learner moving to a later run.
- Confirm that certificates, emails and receipts identify the correct cohort.
- Restrict facilitator access to the learners and reports they are responsible for.
Test the complete learner journey before launch
Use a separate test account and run the course as a learner, not only as an administrator. Check each point below with the dates and timezone used by your site.
- Attempt enrollment before, during and after the enrollment window.
- Confirm that access begins and ends on the intended dates.
- Verify that drip lessons release on the planned days and that a reset cohort starts its schedule correctly.
- Complete a lesson, quiz and assignment; check prerequisites and completion status.
- Open every meeting link, calendar file and recording from the learner view.
- Trigger notifications and confirm sender, timing and cohort-specific wording.
- Test certificate generation, report visibility, cancellation, refund and transfer handling.
- Check the experience on mobile and in the timezone used by remote learners.
Fix any issue in the reusable curriculum before creating additional runs, while treating dates, links and announcements as cohort-specific settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operate and maintain each cohort
At launch, publish a welcome message, orientation checklist and first-week instructions. During the run, keep one authoritative calendar, record attendance consistently and respond to questions in the designated support channel. After the final assignment, close access according to your policy, issue certificates and export the reports you need for compliance or evaluation.

Plan for curriculum changes
Separate-instance systems require a maintenance decision: determine whether an edit to the master course should be copied into active cohorts, future cohorts only or neither. Review every active run after changing a lesson, quiz, prerequisite or downloadable file; an update that is harmless for a future class can disrupt learners already in progress.
Decision guide
- Choose LifterLMS Course Cohorts when independent course instances, enrollment windows, access dates and drip resets are the priority.
- Choose LearnDash Cohort Manager when your site already relies on LearnDash’s builder and you want a centralized cohort-management workflow.
- Choose Tutor LMS when synchronous teaching and Zoom scheduling are central and its integration requirements fit your stack.
None of these choices by itself supplies the teaching design. The quality of a cohort depends on a clear schedule, active facilitation, useful peer interaction and an access configuration that matches the promise made at checkout.
