You can add WooCommerce product badges with an admin extension, custom PHP for the built-in sale badge, or CSS for visual styling. For a no-code badge with rules for selected products, categories, or campaigns, use the official Product Badges extension: create a badge under Products > Badges, then set its content and display conditions.
Choose the right way to add a badge

The official WooCommerce Product Badges extension is the more direct choice for rules-based badges managed in the dashboard. Product Badges and Labels is another option when you need its dynamic pricing tags or customer-role targeting. For either extension, check its current listing for availability and terms before installing.
Create a badge with the Product Badges extension
- Install and activate the official Product Badges extension.
- In the dashboard, go to Products > Badges and choose Add New.
- Choose a badge format. Product Badges supports text, images, countdown badges, and code or HTML. Set the content and, where available, options such as color, size, padding, border radius, and position. WooCommerce notes that custom HTML and CSS can be used for unique badges (Product Badges documentation).
- Configure the products or conditions that should display the badge, then save it.
- Check a matching product on the storefront to confirm the badge’s placement and appearance.
Target only selected products or campaigns
Badge conditions determine where a badge appears. Depending on the extension, you can target all products or narrow the rule using conditions such as:
- Specific products or product categories
- Sale status, featured status, product type, or price
- Stock status or quantity, shipping class, product tags, or total sales
Product Badges and Labels also supports date-based scheduling and customer-role targeting. Use a schedule for a promotion with a defined start and end, or a role condition when a badge should be visible only to a particular customer group. Available conditions depend on the extension and its configuration; consult the relevant Product Badges documentation or the Product Badges and Labels listing for details.

Use the featured-product condition
To mark a product as featured, open Products > All Products and select the star in the Featured column for that product. Then use a featured-product condition in the badge extension, if supported, to show the badge on featured items (WooCommerce product management documentation).
Use dynamic promotional text and images
Product Badges and Labels supports predefined promotional images, uploaded images, and dynamic pricing tags including {percentage}, {discount}, {price}, {saleprice}, and {delprice} (Product Badges and Labels). These tags let a badge reflect product pricing rather than requiring the same discount figure to be typed into every label. Verify the rendered text on a product page, especially if your store displays prices differently by currency, tax setting, or customer location.

Change the built-in sale badge with PHP
WooCommerce’s On-Sale Badge block displays a Sale badge only for products that are on sale (On-Sale Badge block documentation). If you only need to change its wording in a block-based display, WooCommerce documents the woocommerce_sale_badge_text filter. Its callback receives the sale text and a WC_Product.
Classic theme output can be changed with the woocommerce_sale_flash filter, which lets a developer replace the sale-badge HTML (WooCommerce customization documentation). The filter route changes WooCommerce’s sale badge; it is not a substitute for an extension’s product/category assignment interface. Add code through a maintained child theme or an appropriate code-management method, and test it with your active theme and product templates.

Style badges and fix display problems
For badges created by Product Badges, CSS can target the wcpb-product-badges-badge class or a badge-specific class documented by the extension (Product Badges documentation). Use CSS for presentation changes such as typography, color, and spacing; keep product selection and campaign logic in the extension’s display rules.

- Badge does not appear: Confirm the product meets the configured conditions, the badge is saved and enabled, and any schedule or customer-role rule applies to your test account.
- Badge is misplaced or overlaps the product image: Check whether the theme or another plugin changes product-image markup or hooks, then enable the extension’s relevant compatibility setting if available.
- Changes are not visible: Clear applicable page, object, and browser caches, then reload the product page.
- Custom code causes a problem: Disable the change or restore the previous code, then test with the active theme and other product-display extensions before reapplying it.
