A black full-screen webpage can mean several different things: the page itself is black while browser controls still work, only a video or game rectangle is black, the entire browser window is black, or the computer display is blank outside the browser. Start by identifying which symptom you have. Reload once, test the same address in another browser, and check whether other applications are visible. Those three checks usually separate a page problem from a browser-rendering problem, a network failure, or an operating-system display fault.
Identify what is actually black
Do not begin by replacing hardware or installing a repair utility. The location and repeatability of the black area determine the safest next step.
Only one webpage is black
If browser tabs, menus and other sites look normal but one page is black, the cause may be that site’s scripts, a blocked resource, an extension conflict, or a temporary loading failure.
A video or game rectangle is black
When the surrounding page is visible and only media is black, treat it as a playback problem. Extensions, saved browser data and media components can interfere even when ordinary pages load.

The whole browser window is black
A completely black browser window points more strongly to a browser profile, extension, theme, hardware-acceleration or graphics-driver interaction.
The desktop and other applications are black
If the login screen, desktop or other programs are also blank, this is not a webpage problem. Use Windows blank-screen troubleshooting for the applicable situation, such as a blank screen with a cursor, a blank screen at login or a blank screen after an update.
First isolation: reload, compare and check the rest of the computer
- Reload once. Use the browser’s reload button or
Ctrl+R(Cmd+Ron macOS). If you receive a loading, DNS or connection error, follow the connection branch below rather than changing graphics settings. - Open the exact URL in another browser. For example, compare Chrome with Firefox or Edge. If it works elsewhere, the original browser’s profile, extensions or rendering settings are likely involved. If it fails in multiple browsers, a website or network cause becomes more plausible.
- Open several unrelated sites. One failing domain suggests a site-side issue; many failing domains suggest your connection, VPN, security software or router.
- Check another application and the desktop. If those are normal, keep troubleshooting the browser or site. If they are black too, stop treating this as a webpage fault and move to operating-system/display troubleshooting.
Record what changed after each test. Reproducibility—one site or every site, one browser or every browser, ordinary content or media—prevents unrelated fixes from being mixed together.
Fix a page that is black in one browser
Test extensions and themes
Temporarily disable every extension, reload the page, and test again. In Chrome, open the three-dot menu, choose Extensions and Manage extensions, then switch extensions off. In Firefox, use Troubleshoot Mode to test without extensions, themes and hardware acceleration. If the page returns, re-enable extensions one at a time until the conflict reappears. Remove or update the extension that causes it.
Privacy blockers, script controls, video downloaders, dark-mode themes and overlay tools are common suspects, but do not assume any one category is responsible. The one-at-a-time test identifies the actual conflict without permanently weakening browser protection.

Test hardware acceleration
Hardware acceleration is a reversible diagnostic toggle. In Chrome, open Settings → System, turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, then choose Relaunch. Reopen the page after the browser restarts. If the black rendering disappears, the symptom suggests an interaction between the browser, GPU driver and page rendering; it does not prove that the graphics card must be replaced.
Firefox’s Troubleshoot Mode provides a similar comparison. Graphics hardware and drivers can affect web content, so install operating-system or vendor driver updates through your normal, trusted update channel if the issue began after a driver change. Restore acceleration later if disabling it causes poorer video performance or higher CPU use.
Use a clean browser profile
Open a private window as a quick test. If the page works there, saved site data or an extension is implicated. A separate, temporary browser profile is a stronger test because it excludes the original profile’s settings. Do not delete your profile first; bookmarks, sign-ins and site preferences may be lost.

Check playback-specific interference
Disable extensions, especially content filters and overlays, and reload. Confirm that the browser is current and that the page is not asking for a blocked permission. Try the same video or game in another browser to determine whether the issue follows the site or the browser.
Clear site data only after simpler tests
Clearing cached files and cookies can repair corrupted saved state, but it can also sign you out and remove site-specific preferences. In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data; choose a limited time range first and understand which categories you are removing. Edge and Firefox provide equivalent privacy settings. If only one domain is affected, remove data for that site rather than wiping the entire history.

Network and website checks
If the same URL is black or unavailable in multiple browsers, test other websites. Restart the modem or router if the whole connection is unstable. Temporarily disconnect a VPN to compare results, then reconnect it if it is required. Security software can block scripts or media; use only a controlled diagnostic change approved by your administrator, restore protection immediately, and contact the security-software or network administrator if blocking continues. Never leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a permanent fix.
A site may also be broken for everyone. Look for a status notice from the site owner or ask its support team. If the browser reports a connection error instead of rendering a page, follow the browser’s connection and loading guidance; a black canvas is not evidence of a graphics failure.

When the display is black beyond the browser, switch to Windows blank-screen troubleshooting. The correct branch depends on whether a mouse cursor is visible, whether the blank screen occurs at login, and whether it began after an update. Possible causes include a stalled Windows process, display-output selection, a driver problem, profile corruption or an update failure. Disconnecting and reconnecting a display or changing hardware should not be your first response to a symptom that occurs only on one webpage. If you cannot safely access the operating system, obtain help from your device administrator or a qualified repair professional.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Reload changes nothing
Do not repeat reloads indefinitely. Compare browsers, then isolate extensions and acceleration. Repeated reloads cannot fix a blocked script, corrupted site data or an outage.
Turning off acceleration fixes it, but performance worsens
Keep the setting off only as a diagnostic or temporary workaround. Update the graphics driver through a trusted channel and retest. If the issue returns, document the browser version, operating-system version, GPU and affected sites for support.
Private browsing works, normal browsing does not
Compare extensions and site data. Remove only the offending extension or affected domain’s data; avoid a full profile reset until you have backed up important information.

Every browser shows a black page
Check whether other sites work, test without a VPN, restart the router, and ask the site owner if the problem persists. If all applications are black, follow the operating-system branch instead.

What not to buy first
A black webpage alone does not justify buying a monitor, graphics card, HDMI cable or “browser repair” utility. The evidence-based sequence is browser comparison, extension isolation, rendering tests, cautious data clearing and network diagnosis. Hardware replacement becomes reasonable only after a confirmed display or system fault affecting more than the webpage.
