The most direct way to add wishlists is to install the official WooCommerce Wishlists extension, activate it, and configure its automatically created wishlist pages. It supports guest and customer lists, private/shared/public visibility, classic themes, block themes, shortcodes, and a REST API. WordPress 6.8 or later and WooCommerce 10.4 or later are listed as requirements.
What you need before installing
- A WordPress site running WordPress 6.8 or later.
- WooCommerce 10.4 or later.
- Administrator access to upload and activate a plugin.
- A decision about whether guests can create lists and whether lists may be private, shared by link, or public.
Wishlist functionality is provided by an extension or plugin; it is not a catalog setting in WooCommerce core.
Install the official WooCommerce Wishlists extension
- Download the extension ZIP from your WooCommerce account.
- In WordPress, open Admin > Plugins > Add New.
- Choose Upload Plugin, select the ZIP file, install it, and activate it.
- After activation, check WooCommerce > Settings > Wishlists.
Activation creates five pages: Wishlists, Create a List, Manage List, Find a List, and View a List. The extension selects these pages in its Wishlist Page Options, so verify the assignments rather than creating replacements.
Configure guest access, privacy, and wishlist behavior
Open WooCommerce > Settings > Wishlists and set the options that match your store’s account and sharing policy.

Guest and customer lists
- Allow or prevent guests from creating lists.
- Choose whether the first list is created automatically.
- Guest lists can be claimed when the visitor logs in or registers; signed-in customers keep their lists indefinitely.
Visibility and sharing
- Private: visible only to the list owner.
- Shared by link: accessible to people who have the link.
- Public: discoverable through the store’s list-finding features.
Enable only the social sharing options you actually want to offer. Sharing settings should reflect whether customers may expose intended purchases, gift ideas, or saved products publicly.
Save and notification controls
- Choose whether saving a product redirects shoppers to the wishlist.
- Select a button or text-link presentation for the save control.
- Configure price-drop notifications if you want the extension to offer them.
- Choose whether customers are prompted for a quantity when adding an item from a list.
- Use the extension’s color and custom CSS controls to match the theme.
Show the Add to Wishlist control on products
Classic themes
With a classic theme, the extension adds the control automatically to product pages and product listings in the positions configured by the extension. There is normally nothing to insert manually.

Block themes
The extension registers Add to Wishlist and Wishlist blocks. Go to Appearance > Editor, open the Single Product or Product Catalog template, and move, style, or remove the relevant block. Block placement follows the styling controls exposed through theme.json.
Page builders and custom templates
Insert the button with the [wc_wishlists_button] shortcode. For a custom link, use [wc_wishlists_add_link product_id="123" title="Save this"], replacing 123 with the product ID and changing the link title as needed.

Add wishlist navigation to your site
The official extension does not add a wishlist link to your site’s menu automatically. Add one manually in the location your theme uses for navigation:
- For a block theme, edit the Navigation block in Appearance > Editor.
- For a classic theme, use Appearance > Menus or the theme’s menu customizer.
Link the menu item to the generated Wishlists page, and consider adding it to the account or header navigation so returning shoppers can find saved products quickly.

Use wishlist data in custom integrations
The official extension exposes wishlist data through the wc-wishlists/v1 REST API namespace, including routes for lists and list items. Use that namespace when a custom account dashboard, app, or integration needs to read or manage wishlist data; check the extension’s current API documentation for authentication and route details before building against it.

Launch checklist and upgrade cautions
- Confirm the documented minimum WordPress and WooCommerce versions on the extension page before installation.
- Test creating a list as a guest, then log in or register and verify that the list is claimable.
- Test private, shared-link, and public visibility with accounts that should and should not have access.
- Check the save control on a product page, a shop/archive loop, and a variable or otherwise customized product template.
- Test the generated pages and add the Wishlists page to navigation.
- If upgrading from an older WooCommerce Wishlists release, review template and CSS changes: legacy button templates, selectors, URL behavior, and filters may have changed.
