The parent assignment creates the page hierarchy; navigation and page listings determine whether visitors can find the new page.
Create a child page from the WordPress dashboard
This route works across the widest range of WordPress themes and setups.
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Open Pages > Add New, or select Add New from the Pages screen.
- Enter the child page’s title and add its content with the Block Editor. You can use headings, images, lists and other blocks.
- Open the page settings sidebar. If it is hidden, use the settings button in the editor toolbar.
- Find Parent or Parent Page and select the existing page that this page belongs under.
- Optionally set Order if the site’s hierarchy or a default page listing uses page order.
- Preview the page and inspect its permalink to confirm the hierarchy, then select Publish.
WordPress may generate a hierarchical URL such as /about/board-of-directors/, but the exact address depends on the site’s permalink structure. Check the actual permalink instead of assuming that every site will use the same pattern.
What the Parent setting does
Pages are hierarchical content in WordPress, so one page can be assigned as the parent of another. The new page then becomes a child, or subpage, of that existing page. The Parent control appears for hierarchical post types such as Pages in the editor’s page settings.
#1 Best Overall
Assigning a parent organizes the content and can affect generated URLs, breadcrumbs and hierarchy-aware page lists. It does not automatically guarantee that the child appears in every navigation menu.
Make the child page visible to visitors
Add it to site navigation
Check the site’s navigation or menu editor and add the new page if it is not already listed. A custom navigation setup may require you to add the link manually, even after the parent relationship has been created.

List children with the Page List block
On a page or template, insert a Page List block and configure it to use the relevant parent. This can display only the child pages of that parent, subject to the theme’s styling and the block’s settings.
Show the hierarchy with breadcrumbs
Insert a Breadcrumbs block on the page or in a template when you want visitors to see their location in the site’s structure. Breadcrumbs can follow the parent-child relationship between Pages.
Alternative: manage pages in the Site Editor
Sites using an active block theme may also provide page management at Appearance > Editor > Pages. Open the page-management view, create or select the page, and set its Parent in the page settings before publishing.
The Site Editor’s Pages menu is theme-dependent. If you do not see Appearance > Editor > Pages, use the standard Pages > Add New route instead. The essential step—assigning the existing page in Parent—is the same.

Troubleshoot common problems
The Parent control is missing
- Confirm that you are editing a Page rather than a post or a content type that is not hierarchical.
- Open the page settings sidebar and look for Parent or Parent Page.
- Check whether an editor, theme or plugin has changed the available page settings.
The Site Editor Pages menu is missing
Appearance > Editor > Pages is available only with a block theme. Switch to the regular Pages screen for the broadly compatible workflow.
The child page is not in the menu
Parent assignment establishes the hierarchy, while navigation settings control what appears in menus. Add the page to the site’s navigation, or use a Page List block or Breadcrumbs block where appropriate.

The URL does not include the parent path
Inspect the page’s generated permalink and the site’s permalink configuration. WordPress supports hierarchical URLs, but the visible structure can vary by site settings and configuration.
Quick Recap
Child page checklist
- The existing parent page is selected in Parent or Parent Page.
- The title and content are complete.
- Order is set if the site’s hierarchy or listing depends on it.
- The permalink has been checked.
- The page is published.
- Navigation, a Page List block or breadcrumbs expose it if visitors need a link to it.
