How to Insert an Image URL in Excel (IMAGE Formula, Errors and Alternatives)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To insert an image from a URL into an Excel cell, put the direct HTTPS image-file address in a cell and use the IMAGE function. For example, enter an image URL in A2, then enter =IMAGE(A2) where you want the picture. You can also place the URL directly in the formula: =IMAGE("https://example.com/image.jpg").

The address must point to the image itself—not a webpage containing it—and the host must allow Excel to fetch it without a login. The steps below cover sizing, accessibility, supported versions, common errors and static-picture alternatives.

Use the IMAGE function to display a URL-based picture

  1. Copy the direct image-file URL. It should begin with https:// and end in, or otherwise serve, a supported image format.
  2. Paste the URL into a worksheet cell, such as A2.
  3. In the destination cell, enter =IMAGE(A2) and press Enter.
  4. Adjust the row height and column width if needed. The picture is displayed in the cell rather than as a separate floating object.

For a single image, a literal URL also works: =IMAGE("https://example.com/image.jpg"). Referencing a URL cell is usually easier for lists because you can fill the formula down.

Syntax and optional arguments

Microsoft documents this syntax:

=IMAGE(source, [alt_text], [sizing], [height], [width])

  • height and width are used only with custom sizing.

Sizing modes

Value Result When to use it
0 Fits the image in the cell while preserving its aspect ratio. Best default for undistorted thumbnails.
1 Fills the cell and ignores the original aspect ratio. Use only when stretching or cropping proportions is acceptable.
2 Shows the image at its original size, which can extend beyond the cell. Useful when the source dimensions matter more than the grid.
3 Uses the supplied height and width in pixels. Use for a consistent catalog or report layout.

Examples:

  • =IMAGE(A2,"Blue ceramic mug",0) fits the image and supplies alternative text.
  • =IMAGE(A2,,3,120,160) requests a 120-pixel height and 160-pixel width. Leave the second argument empty only when you have no alt text; useful descriptive text is preferable.

Microsoft cautions that custom height and width can skew proportions. If the source is portrait or landscape, mode 0 generally avoids distortion.

Build an image column for a list

A two-column sheet is convenient for product catalogs, asset lists or inspection records.

Cell Content
A1 Image URL
B1 Image
A2:A… One direct HTTPS image URL per row
B2 =IMAGE(A2,"Catalog image",0)

After entering the formula in B2, drag the fill handle down or copy and paste it through the remaining rows. Each formula will use the URL on its own row. Make sure every URL is accessible to the people and devices opening the workbook; a URL that works only while you are signed in will not render for others.

Which Excel versions support IMAGE?

Microsoft lists IMAGE for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac, Excel 2024, Excel 2024 for Mac, Excel for iPhone and Excel for Android phones. Availability can depend on the specific installation and update channel, so check the current Microsoft Support page if the function is missing.

IMAGE requires an internet connection to retrieve a remote picture. A workbook opened offline, or while the image server is unavailable, may show an error instead of the image.

Use a URL Excel can actually fetch

Use HTTPS and the image file itself

The source must use HTTPS. Paste the image link—not the address of a gallery, product page or search-results page. A browser page can display an image while still being the wrong source for IMAGE because Excel expects the image response itself.

Avoid login walls and redirects

Excel cannot render a source that requires authentication. Microsoft also says redirected source URLs are blocked for security reasons. If a copied link first goes through a tracking, login or download page, obtain a final, direct image address from the host instead.

Keep the URL within the documented limit

Microsoft documents a 255-character URL limit. If the browser address is very long, right-click the picture and choose the browser’s “Copy image link” command, then paste that shorter or direct address into a worksheet cell. Refer to that cell with =IMAGE(F10) rather than putting a long address inside the formula.

Choose a supported format

Microsoft lists BMP, JPG/JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, ICO and WEBP. WEBP is not supported in Excel for the web or on Android. An unsupported format can produce #VALUE!; converting the file to PNG or JPEG is a practical workaround when the target platform cannot display WEBP.

Diagnose IMAGE errors

Error or symptom Likely cause Fix
#VALUE! Unsupported format, a non-text source or alt-text argument, an invalid sizing value, missing dimensions for mode 3, or dimensions supplied with modes 0, 1 or 2. Check that the URL is text, use a supported format, set sizing to 0–3, and provide height and width only with sizing 3.
#CONNECT! Excel cannot reach the image server or the connection is unavailable. Reconnect to the internet, test the direct URL in a browser, and try again when the host is responding.
#BLOCKED! Workbook security or image-permission controls are preventing remote content. Review the workbook’s security prompts and image permissions. Excel for the web and mobile users may need to enable images through the business bar at the top of the workbook.
Nothing appears, or a page appears instead of an image The URL points to HTML, requires a session, redirects, or is not publicly reachable. Copy the direct image link, remove login requirements, and verify that the server returns an image over HTTPS.
The picture is stretched Sizing mode 1 fills the cell without preserving proportions, or custom dimensions do not match the source. Use sizing mode 0, or choose height and width that reflect the source’s aspect ratio.
WEBP works on one device but not another WEBP is unsupported in Excel for the web and Android. Use PNG or JPEG for a workbook shared across those platforms.

A quick isolation checklist

  • Open the URL in a private browser window to confirm it does not depend on your login or cookies.
  • Confirm the address starts with https:// and is no longer than 255 characters.
  • Check that the response is a supported image format rather than an HTML error page.
  • Try =IMAGE("https://example.com/image.jpg") in a blank workbook to separate a formula problem from a workbook security setting.
  • If the workbook is in Excel for the web or on Android, do not use WEBP.

Accessibility and worksheet layout

Write alt text that conveys the image’s useful information, not just its file name. For example, =IMAGE(A2,"Blue ceramic mug with a red handle",0) is more helpful than “image 14.” If the image is decorative and conveys no information, keep the description short rather than adding irrelevant detail.

IMAGE places the picture in the cell, so row height and column width become part of the design. Set those dimensions consistently before filling a large range. Mode 0 preserves proportions; mode 1 can make a grid uniform but may distort every source.

When a URL formula is the wrong tool

IMAGE is designed for a live, formula-driven remote image. If you need a one-off picture embedded from your computer or a static image that should not depend on a remote URL, use Excel’s insertion tools instead.

Excel for the web

Microsoft documents insertion from your device, Stock Images, Bing Pictures and the clipboard. Bing results must use a valid HTTPS image URL; insecure or invalid image links are unsupported.

Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024

Microsoft’s Place in Cell documentation lists IMAGE, ribbon insertion, multi-image insertion, clipboard paste and conversion between pictures placed in cells and pictures floating over cells. Listed in-cell formats include JPG/JPEG, PNG, BMP, ICO, WEBP, TIF/TIFF and non-animated GIF.

Choose insertion rather than IMAGE when the recipient must be able to open the workbook without internet access, when the source requires a login, or when you want the picture stored with the workbook instead of fetched from a server.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean screenshot of a webpage to use as an Excel image, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page through one API request. Save the returned PNG, JPEG or WebP file, then place it at an HTTPS address that Excel can access without a login or redirect before using IMAGE.

The API documentation is at screenshotneo.com/docs/. cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is included on every plan.
